Approaching the Neville, if you can find it nestling bucolically amongst a dovecote, stream and tentative beer garden, you could be forgiven for thinking you're in for a first class English Pub Experience.
Once inside, the atmosphere is a little confused. The pub has elements of 21st century rural life: the soft hum of house price discussions, rosy cheeked staff staff, log fire.
But hang on a minute - what are those large photos of the London skyline doing in here? Where are the browning pictures of the Cottesmore hunt? What about a foxes tail? This is Leiecestershire, goddammit.
Oh no, you realise, the Neville has gone gastro. Which is fine, but why urban gastro? The grub is ok but there's a feeling that you're eating mutton dressed up as lamb. The quality of the food isn't right for the prices. I've even heard of chicken being served - pink. Guests have been told no, they can't order food at lunchtime, the kitchen will be reopen at 3pm.
Bowl of chips, bang on. Anything more sophisticated and I'm disappointed. Just give us some hearty country pub food and we'll drink to that. Well, we will in the bar area, not the horrendous dining room at the back. Eat in there and you may get tumble weed in your soup.
It's not all bad. The beer is good and well kept with a number of guest ales coming through on a regular basis.
The best bit? The locals. Wonderful and welcoming. read more
