So amongst my friends, I am reliably informed this is Mullards. It's located on Padiham road so you'll need a taxi from the town centre unless you fancy a bit of a trek. As with most clubs, you'll be required to pay a nominal entrance fee but the cheap drinks, lively atmosphere and regular live music makes it worth the money. The club is quite large and looks like a normal pub inside. It attracts people of all ages and has a healthy and interesting mix of clientele. Mullards is a very popular venue in Burnley, especially when they have live music. At bank holidays, you'll need to get there early as it's not unheard of for them to send people away since it's full to the brim.

Plus the drinks are cheap. Of course they are, it's a Baa Bar. Winner. You'll get the odd club night here but it seems to have entered the collective consciousness as a venue for 'pre-drink drinks'. And hey, they have a place. I bet if we put together a list of pre-drinks drinks places we'd end up with something colossal. The music's not exactly my cup of tea with all that jungle, drum n' bass and underground dance (I'm making myself sound old, I must stop) but if that floats your boat then this place will too. I must admit I am partial to a basement club setting, I don't know why but it just does it for me. On the surface it really hasn't got that much else going for it. It's dark, dingy got that dirty feel but that's what makes it cool. It doesn't care to be superficially in tune, just stick Manchester's king of radio Clint Boon as the selling point and rev up a following of his Boon army to lure in the crowds, not that it's in your face like that. Located in the vicinity of the likes of The Venue and 42s, South's allure is that it doesn't try hard. South's dwellers are admittedly older than 18 or even 20. It's not there to look particularly cool but simply to deliver the Indie anthems to get the liberal dances and shape throwers out. Who needs to look cool when you yourself can be cool because you're there for the music and the laugh with your mates, that is the new cool. Having said that what's an indie establishment without the odd trendy. Past guest DJ sets include West Londoner band White Lies (amazing). South's definitely worth a try if only to make the comparison between the others. It's "The C word" on a Friday night, drinks offers, fun times. Your indie Friday and Saturday could do with this new transformation, the coined "Boon Weekender."

When it is busy it is a really top night out, but can often feel a bit lacking when it is quiet! Maybe the building is just to big for Flares to do it justice? And you will appreciate the cheap student entry and cheap drinks. The comparisons to 5th Avenue are endless: personally I prefer 42s. Ok, its not big enough to run around and lose people and end up drinking on your own, say. But it does capture that New York dingy charm more. Either get sweaty and shout out the lyrics to The Smiths, Oasis and The Killers in the middle or join the handful of posers lounging on the one couch by the entrance. They are launching a request driven night on Mondays now 'PMT' which stands for Play My Tune - weird choice for the name but we'll forgive them. Other than that, you have 'Glamourous Indie Rock n Roll' on Fridays and their 'The Best Indie Night ever ...' on Tuesdays. And, be warned the bouncers do NOT take kindly to bare feet. A friend paid to put her high heels in the cloakroom once and then was immediately told she would be kicked out if she didn't put shoes back on. Fair enough but she didn't get a refund...

It was featured in the 50s film noir Hell is A City and since then, seems to have gone from chic to shabby with little investment or TLC. The carpets are frayed, the seats are grubby and the walls upstairs are painted chocolate. Endearingly, none of this seems to bother the students and regulars who flock there for the monthly Smiths nights and occasional rock and punk gigs. The gigs are housed upstairs on the first floor - where there's a small stage and bar - whilst the club nights straddle the ground and first floor. Drinks are cheap and cheerful and there's a long-running indie night every Saturday called Smile. You might hear the odd Brian Wilson song but you're more likely to hear everything from Pulp and Placebo to Belle and Sebastian. I was really dubious about what my…read morefriends had planned for me, considering we were heading in a direction that seemed to be slighty outside the city and more than slightly IN to Manchester's Red Light district. 'Guys...' I found myself saying ominously in the way the first dingbat of a bimbo to get killed in a horror movie always does. Then when we arrived, I was confused. 'Why are we at what looks like one of those run down burnt out old hotels on Chapel Street?' my brain was asking me. But I pressed on. I was accompanied by indie expert Mr Bateman, his lovely girlfriend and the Bambi-eyed Jess X, all of whom seemed to have the lowdown on what's cool these days. And upon entering all my woes disappeared. For here is a pub-cum-club almost as famous in the city as Night and Day, with something to offer every poetic soul with a floppy haircut and a love for Morrissey. (That includes myself, and you'll hear more Smiths songs in here than you can shake a stick at.) The Star and Garter is a great venue, with a pub downstairs and seats comfy enough to think you're in the Crescent, and a club upstairs where you can dance your socks off to the best of Manchester's music scene. The Smile clubnight, held every Saturday, is always filled to capacity and something of a phenomenon. Live bands often appear on Thursdays and Fridays, but one Friday each month is reserved for the worship of the miserablist with the quiff, the legendary Morrissey, and The Smiths. Yes, it's an actual Smiths disco. Where else would you find a disco dedicated to one man/band? Not only does this speak volumes about how important Morrissey is to Mancunians, it says a lot about Star & Garter's knack for pleasing their public. I've never had a bad night here. Brave it through the brothels and find your way to this gem of a place - you won't be disappointed.
