I had the opportunity to visit St. Benedict while on a Tenderness Tour event in Terre Haute,…read moreIndiana. While I am not Catholic, I have a deep appreciation for a variety of spiritual paths and I'm a lover of churches. St. Benedict was within wheeling distance of the hotel where I was staying - so, I decided to go ahead and visit. Please do note that this visit was pre-pandemic, so references to communal worship are not impacted by current health regulations. I'm simply trying to catch up on my reviews! Father Martin Day is the pastor of St. Benedict, a parish that has been in existence for over 150 years. I immediately fell in love with the church. The cornerstone of the church was laid way back in 1864. It was initially served by Benedictines and then Franciscans. In the late 1980s, the church went through quite a few renovations including an extended sanctuary, moving of the baptismal font into the sanctuary, the tabernacle was moved, the church was re-carpeted, and the audio was vastly improved. It speaks volumes about the memorable service that I do, in fact, still remember it and I do still remember the people. I have found that Catholic masses tend to be either incredibly social or incredibly internal. You basically get to choose. I tend to be very introspective during church services - it's nice to be acknowledged, but it's also nice to be able to have my experience and my time with God. The windows of St. Benedict are also quite beautiful - they are nicely described on the parish website. The church celebrates Mass at 12:05pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. They also have a Saturday evening Vigil Mass and a Sunday morning mass - the Sunday morning mass is also livestreamed. They also have a video on their website that offers a virtual tour of their really beautiful church. I enjoyed this Mass quite a bit. While I am not Catholic, many members of my family are and I'm somewhat familiar with the traditions. I obviously did not participate in Communion as that is not allowed. When I visit a church, I observe their beliefs and practices while also being faithful to my own. This is a wonderful church in Terre Haute and I will definitely visit again during those times I'm in the Terre Haute area.
