It is the best thing that I have ever signed myself up for. After Varsity closing , I was really missing the comradery of working out with others and being pushed to my limits. Fightcamp is a 6 week block, from which you can choose to either attend AM or PM classes, held at both the Griphouse and Arc (Caledonia Uni) . The sessions are a mix of boxing, muay thai , strength and conditioning. With each session, you will refine your skills in each of these area. The coaches are extremely supportive and always offering hints and tips on form and technique. However, there is nowhere to hide, I swear they have eyes of the back of their heads. I have learned so much in such a short time and am looking forward to continuing to learn new skills. The coaches, create a really positive and welcoming environment and are always on hand to answer any questions, both in person and via email. You are provided with lots of support and advice on nutrition and getting the best from your training. I have been super impressed by the information provided for vegetarians, as this is something I often find protein hungry gym folks struggle with. I am only a few weeks in, so will update my post with more info. But the fact that I have signed up for the next 6 week block says it all!

I had a routine, I did it, I came home and was a bit unenthused about the whole thing. A friend suggested I try Crossfit. I really didn't know what I was getting myself into, but when I walked into Crossfit Glasgow, I knew that this would be different. Crossfit is tucked away in one of the arches under the train lines, in Tradeston. Before you become a full member, you need to do a Fundamentals course of 5 classes (£35 for the 5 classes) covering the basic skills you need to be able to do a Crossfit class. These are normally small group classes of about 4-8 people per class and involve the basic skills of weightlifting, squats and a few other crucial movements. Fundamentals are great to get really helpful pointers on your movements and be corrected if you were doing anything wrong, to minimise the chance of injury (and looking like an idiot). Don't be fooled though: these classes end with a killer workout and you will be sweating like a beast once it's over. Once you "graduate" Fundamentals (my words, not theirs!) you will be able to go along to the normal scheduled classes. Essentially what happens is you turn up for a timetabled class, and have an instructor guide you through that day's workout. So no picking and choosing, and no coming up with your own routine. It's called the Workout of the Day (WOD) and can be a real mixed bag of pain and/or torture. There are 8 classes a day spread out from 6.15am to 7.15pm. If you are competent enough, you can work out in the open gym at other times of the day. There is a lot of codewords and exercises you'll never have heard of if you're new to Crossfit. But it's a friendly environment where people will help you out if you ask. The coaches are super supportive and encouraging, and will push you to keep going when you really want to give up. Returning to my original point is that I stopped going to Crossfit because I was poor (it is £30 per month for two visits per week) and also a little bit lazy. If you want somewhere that's going to challenge you and give you an awesome buzz from lifting up heavy things, then Crossfit might be the gym for you.

So apologies, I don't actually know what the gym space is like apart from being able to see the people on their bikes at the window that overlook the gym hall! The staff on reception are always friendly and helpful. The foyer has a drinks machine that only sells lucozade/sports drinks which can be a downer if you forgot your water and don't like sports drinks. There is now barrier entry meaning you need a swipe card to go in and out, obviously to keep non-members out of the gym. The main hall is big enough to fit two basketball courts, or one roller derby track with seating. The floor is nice to skate on, if not a little slippy but you get used to it quickly. We sometimes train in the smaller hall with black flooring which is more slippery but has a full length mirror down the length of the room so you can check out you're in proper derby stance (handy!). The best thing about the Arc is the changing area and toilets, they are always clean and tidy. People seem to respect the space and don't leave rubbish lying around. Big props to the staff who keep these spaces tidy when I'm sure there must be loads of people using these areas. When I train at the Arc I park on Milton Street behind Glasgow Cali and walk through the campus as it's cheaper than parking at Concert Square. It's free on a Sunday and after 6pm during the week.

It's not just for students, though it is alot cheaper for Glasgow Caledonian students and alumni. Their website boasts over half of the customers are people who work or live nearby. The changing rooms are spacious which is a must for me, and they do towel hire. As well as the gym and exercise classes, the Arc is home to several sports clubs with sport and exercise being a major focal point of University life at Glasgow Caledonian. What you might not know about this place, or might not expect anyhow, is that they also do hairdressing with discounts for GCU staff and students, as well as senior citizens. The missus has been here a few times, and with regular satisfaction. There is also a Beauty Spa, where you can get waxing done, tanning, massages and all the other indulgences that accompany surrendering your body over to these people. The missus, again, has been here several times without cause for complaint. A great place that is always full of life.

Drop off your keys as deposit for a locker key then crack on with your routine. Big plus for me is the daily rate charge. No contract and no hassle and great value if you're only attending a gym once a week like me. There are contract options available as well as up front options that offer good value for heavier users. Varied community of customers from those doing their own workout, to folk working through a tough routine with a personal trainer, to the folk on the weights. Staff friendly and helpful with any questions. It's a great local facility conveniently placed in Shawlands. Nice to have a bit of a view over Kilmarnock road too. Some members would hog equipment and tell you that they where doing a circuit with 3 items of equipment. There was a rule that you had to arrive at the gym an hour and a half before it closed or entry would be denied. Some staff could be rude towards members, there was never politeness or any personal touch. When my membership ended l went elsewhere l would never recommend this gym. Club moativation encompasses the gym & pool at the Crowne Plaza hotel. I had a number of visits…read morehere as part of a Groupon offer, having seen what was on offer I can understand why it was on offer. The gym itself is really small, I can't see more than 20 folk fitting in here at any one time! The problem for any serious gym goer is that there's no real benefit of being a member, apart from the fact that it was fairly quiet whenever I visited. The equipment selection doesn't seem to have been thought out, there's not enough of it to constitute a complete workout. There are only 5 weight machines which isn't enough for a balanced workout for the arms & legs. There's a couple of static bikes, a rowing machine, a stair climber and 4 treadmills for a cardio workout, which is fine when it's quiet, but I'd question how long you'd have to wait during busier times. The treadmills look out onto the pool, which can be really distracting as there can be a lot going on in your peripheral vision. There's a small warmup/weights area, with all the benches and weights, it only really fits two people, unless you like bumping elbows. There's another small box enclosure with a punching bag, but I never saw anyone using it (why would you when the gloves look grim & there's barely room to swing a cat!) The pool area includes a sauna and a jacuzzi bath which seemed to be very popular with the leisure crowd. The pool itself isn't much more than a place for a relaxing dip. The pool isn't particularly deep, you can stand at both ends, so forget doing lengths, you're liable to spend more time dodging other users than to raise your heartbeat. I never used the pool or sauna because there seemed little point in trying to go for a swim. The changing rooms reminded me of school sports facilities, there are only two hot showers (there are 2 cold showers but why?!!) which are right opposite the door to the pool and as there's no cubicles or screens it is a bit risky (or risqué). They do provide cotton buds & plastic bags for wet swim wear, but I think most people would prefer private showers! I understand why the business exists, the hotel has the space & pool and it needs to try and use what it has to create extra revenue streams. The problem is that at just under £30 a month it's just not competitively priced given what it offers. Unless you work close by and are looking for a place to have a leisurely post work swim or short stretch on the treadmill then why would you bother??! Close by are a number of gyms with a multitude of facilities at a similar price & another priced at £18 p/m, so really it begs the question why come here unless you're staying at the hotel..

I have had a massage here, and also a pedicure. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and extremely professional. They cater for groups and individuals, and it is lovely to use the pool, sauna and steam room either before or after your treatment. They regulary have great promotions - usually a different one each month, and the products used are really high quality. The salon is good value for money and very handy if you are staying at the hotel itself. The easist way to get there is by car or train, getting off at Exhibition Centre and walking across the covered walkway to the SECC. Parking is free if you tell the salon receptionist, as they will give you a voucher to cover your parking.

I was giving false emails and then giving the general manager who never answered. This was email sent I need to know how to early cancel on health grounds I signed up in January and waited till branch opened in April 29th. I thought I could go, I really wanted to, but since I went I have had sickness, diarrhoea, heart palpitations and seizures. I have Asperger's syndrome, epilepsy, pseudo seizures and anxiety. Now I felt that I could with support cope with the gym and be ok but it's making me ill. I can't go the loss of the money and if you not able to cancel my contract, I'll still need to come as I can't waste money, i know that's not good on health grounds but who wants to lose money. People would say it's risky but I don't wanna lose money. But if you can help me id be grateful, I have only been once and the one before is a PT session I paid for. Can you email me back and I'll go to a doctor if you need and the branch was aware of my seizures. Thanks for your time and consideration But three times even took to Facebook to get a response but nothing, then kelly mcneillie, helped when her a manager didn't give a toss. After kelly sorted it then Charlene cooper replied after 7 weeks. Now claims that harlands only except doctors letters is a lot of rubbish it's all them Hi Andrew, The only thing that Harlands accept is a letter from you doctor detailing the reason why they recommend you not using the gym on a long term basis, I do appreciate you offer to send the other documents but they would be of no use. Have a good day Andrew and let me know how you get on at the doctors on Friday. Best, My advice is if you wanna sign up to this gym, read my problems, look online at all bad reviews hundreds esp around cancellation even after you done minimum term think twice

I've also recently moved so joining here seemed like a good idea. Located in the old Destiny nightclub, Xercise4Less is spread out over several floors. When you join you get a pin number for entry - but there will always be someone at reception to help if you have a problem. It has all the standard cardio and weights equipment, but also has a martial arts cage, boxing ring and really big studio space where most of their classes are held - and there's at least 40 of them each week. You book online for these - and there's no additional cost for then. Oh, and there's a serious lack of mirrors here for those who don't want to watch themselves get red and sweaty. It's a budget gym, but it has exactly what I want.

"I am Hans." "Und I am Franz."…read more"Und ve just vant to pump... *clap* ...YOU UP!" Back in the US, I regularly trained with a personal trainer who would continuously push me harder, and with whom I picked up kettlebell training. After moving back to Glasgow, and being so physically inactive because of the intense demands of juggling my MBA programme, Class and Social Committee, I needed to get my ass in gear again. I went from training at least 6 days a week with a mix of kettlebells, spinning, yoga and pilates; then to absolutely zero physical activity aside from climbing Induction Hill in the middle of Strathclyde's campus, which leaves me panting like a dog. Woof. So being the resourceful and clever gal I am, I found Ubiquitous Fitness (aka Calum). After an exchange of emails, including an extensive interrogation, we set up a session. Calum trains just about anywhere that's convenient for you. He's extremely flexible and his training is bespoke. I told him I enjoy boxing, and we do boxing. I love yoga, so we do yoga. He incorporates different aspects of fitness into his workouts that cater to the client. I especially enjoy when we do kettlebells in Kelvingrove Park. More so when puppies walk by, because the giant steel balls being flung in the air as we train mesmerize them. Then the pups run up wanting to fetch the balls. Little do they know they weigh a tonne! Because Lumberjack and I train together, and have pretty difficult schedules, Calum is extremely flexible when it comes to scheduling and last minute cancellations. He is pretty laid back, but isn't afraid to push you. I've seen my strength and fitness get better over the months that we've trained. Overall, we enjoy working out with Calum, his flexibility, the way he challenges, and his approach to fitness. End of the year goal: lift Lumberjack over my head with one arm. Holla!
