Dressing up to go to Sunday School/Church rubbed me the wrong way. If I wasn't comfortable in what I wore, my attention to church was nonexistent. This is when I was much younger. Still today I am glad to see Church goers wearing everyday clothing and not necessarily the monkey suit. Anyhow, after talking with the pastor for the second time, I find him very laid back and cool to talk to. In the back of my mind i wondered what could be today's lesson in church? Today's Lesson: The Storm Have you ever had a personal storm in your life? Well today's lesson. Started out with how weather people...no,...meteorologist decided to name storms after women. This was later changed to men an women's name. Some of the names of selected storms have a deeper meaning than others. The lesson in short was to keep hope in what you do, because without hope, you might be battling a storm physically, mentally or both for a long time. I don't go to Church very often, but this place gives off good vibes even if I still don't know many of the people there. My wife says the main reason for being there is God. Anything else is an added bonus. I am not as into the Lord as she is, but I will say this. The music, how I feel then I am there and the history of lessons learned keep me coming back for more. I find it fascinating how things I learned in school, specifically Western/Eastern Civilization and American History had bites and peices of things I am now hearing from The Bible. I am moving at a snail's pace come paired to my wife. Yet I don't believe there is a set speed for religion. If there is, my God will have to have patience. Still, I am on a Journey of self discovery. Who knows what I will discover next week.

Pastor Jordan DeMerchant is truly incredible. He has a way of making every single person feel like they're his best friend. He's not only deeply knowledgeable, but also incredibly approachable, down-to-earth, and genuinely invested in the people around him. What really stands out is how involved he and his entire family are. You can tell this isn't just something they do - it's who they are. That level of care and authenticity carries throughout the whole church. Everyone is kind, supportive, and always willing to pray with you or step in to help however they can. The church also does an amazing job supporting its members through difficult times. There's a real sense of community here. People show up for each other in meaningful ways. Sunday services are consistently excellent. Pastor Jordan keeps things casual and engaging, while staying grounded in teaching Scripture and delivering practical, meaningful lessons from the Bible. And it definitely doesn't hurt that he's extremely funny. Jordan brings a lot of joy and energy to every message. If you're looking for a small local northern Virginia church where you'll feel known, supported, and spiritually encouraged, this is truly a special place. I am truly blessed to have found this church with my fiancé and we are so lucky to be apart of this strong community!

I have felt more than welcome by all three priests at St. Lawrence. I had my child baptized here, and they worked with me through some unusual circumstances. There is a Knights of Columbus parish breakfast once a month, there are many social opportunities, I've been visited by the Rosary Guild, by the Legion of Mary, and other organizations attached to the parish. In short, I've felt MORE than welcome here than at any other parish I've ever attended! Not only will you receive solid Catholic teaching here (and by "solid" I don't mean "fire and brimstone", I mean "straight out of the Catechism"), but you will find good Liturgy here as well. Fr. Mould is absolutely wonderful, as anyone who knows him can attest. I do find the two Polish priests a bit difficult to understand at times. The priests will not treat you as second-class citizens, nor assume you know nothing. This is not for people who want simple, happy "sound byte" Catholicism, devoid of some of the more relevant issues of the day. You will be treated like an adult and not spoon-fed platitudes. I'm not quite sure what JB is talking about about not being "allowed" to switch parishes. I'm not aware of any sort of compulsion; I have friends from this area who attend St. John's in McLean despite being in St. Lawrence's geographical area. Regarding Tony M's comment about being warned away from receiving Communion if not being a Catholic in good standing with the Church (i.e. within having confessed recently and attended more than twice a year), this is extremely standard and reflects the seriousness of receiving the Eucharist. It is not a meaningless sacrament, it is not (only) a symbol of unity. This information is usually printed in any bulletin, leaflet, missal, etc; it is standard practice on big holidays like Christmas and Easter that the parish priest says this from the pulpit. This is not new, in any parish. I'm baffled as to the other reviewer's charge of "lack of appropriateness"/PG-13 content (!). I'm sorry she had this experience, but again, as a regular parishoner I've got noooo idea what she's talking about. In short, come to St. Lawrence! If you're an early riser, there's a 7:30am Mass. There's a nice traditional choir at the 9am Mass, a contemporary choir at the 11:30 (I think it's 11:30) Mass, and the 12:30 is the Tridentine Mass. On the 4th Sunday of every month, it is a Missa Cantata (a sung Latin Mass, sometimes a High Mass). If you want to know more about our parish, come and see!

The museum is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is a permanent exhibit on the history of the oldest Catholic parish in the Commonwealth of a Virginia. The museum tells a wonderful story of the history of the Catholic church in America , Virginia, and Alexandria. Many famous (and a few Infamous) people have been members or visitors to St Mary's. Notably, George Washington donated money to St Mary's parish to help establish it. George Washington believed and supported religious freedom of all faiths. George Washington's aide-de-camp, John Fitzgerald, was an early member of St Mary's. Fitzgerald was an Irish Merchant who has a great place in history of the Revolutionary War and the founding of the city of Alexandria. Recently, the city tried to erase the memory of John Fitzgerald by removing his name from the now renamed Waterfront Park at the foot of Prince Street because Fitzgerald owned three slaves. The history of Alexandria is undeniably the history of America. No bureaucrat is going to diminish or distort Alexandria's fascinating and complicated past. The museum spends a fair amount of time explaining how the Catholic colonists brought Catholicism to Maryland and how it spread throughout the 13 colonies. It also discusses its past church leaders and the many different buildings where the church and school were housed. In the 1920s, St Mary's leaders created a black Catholic Church, St. Joseph's, which is in North Old Town. Alumnus of St Mary's will appreciate the exhibit on the school, which shows photos of former students and teachers, especially the Holy Cross nuns who operated in the school until around 1990. The Basilica of St Mary Museum is suited for all ages and faiths. If you're a history buff or a local Catholic, you will learn a lot about the history of the United States and Catholicism in the Commonwealth of Virginia. When I first moved here, I was quickly welcomed, invited out to lunch, and got connected with friends through small groups. The friends I made in that first small group are still close to me. Washington D.C. can be an overwhelming place to move to. Lighthouse Fellowship has given me the biblical grounding and community I've needed to flourish here.
