One of the reasons we stayed was that the people are friendly. Note: if you are in a wheelchair or have difficulty walking, park in the large back parking lot - there's a ramp up to the building's doors, and another inside to the actual church entrance at the "el"(on your right as you enter) side. The same priest who was a St. Bartholomew gave the sermon here as they are sister churches. However, this is the priest who laughs at what he says a little too often and without warrant. We all loved the choir with accompanying musicians. Besides the pianist, there were people who played guitar, clarinet, tambourine and drums. Particularly there was one singer who really got into the music and that is a good thing. There was a little more spirit in their songs which we all appreciated, too. The crowd is starting to fill up with students from UC which is bringing a great energy to service. The service opens up with live music and singing. Then the service from Vineyard Tri-County is shown on the TVs and big screen. The kids meet downstairs for their own service. This Vineyard Church is a micro site for the Vineyard in Springdale. So if you live in the central city it's an easier location to attend than the Springdale location It's a mix of students, people from the large Vineyard and the community around Corryville. It's a very eclectic group of people. The church attendance is fairly small since it just opened in the fall, averaging about 50 people. The service starts at 11AM on Sunday at the 86 Club on short vine. The services progression opens with worship lead by the worship band. The band it usually only a couple people playing acoustic worship songs. Then there are announcements and offering, then the video message. If you have been to other vineyards, the setup will be familiar. They offer childcare as well. Parking is only street parking at the moment. They offer free coffee, and potlucks every 4th week of the month. The church is very new and still trying to find its identity in the community.

I went for about 6 weeks and I even made myself stay after service one Sunday and TRIED to talk to people but this congregation was EXTREMELY cliquish, unwelcoming and unfriendly. A family member who went with me once even tried to say hello to someone she met in their "Sing" group (the LEADER of the group) during the week, and when my family member said hello and reminded this woman who she was the "leader" said "Yes, I remember you." And turned and walked away... No "hello" or "nice to see you" or "glad you came again" NOT EVEN A SMILE AND NOD! This was my second attempt to try to join this congregation and this was the final straw for me. I went 4 years ago and had the same unwelcome, unfriendly experience. So, thank you, HUUC, for showing me that my original perspective on churches was right. I will not bother again, and based on past experience, they will be thankful for that too. ‍

So much so, we are now Presbyterians! Sycamore is a very friendly and welcoming congregation. Going to service on Sundays and participating in other activities is so enjoyable. The new Pastor and Associate Pastor are wonderful and they are truly committed to the congregation and especially making the church experience enjoyable for the children. If you are looking for a new or different church, I highly recommend Sycamore Presbyterian. Check it out online if you are not ready to attend. But attending is where true fellowship with these wonderful people thrives!
