I have a mixed feeling about my experience at the New River Junction. It was a blast, but with MY friends, there isn't really a choice in the matter. You really have to pay attention to the website prior to visiting for a litany of reasons. First and foremost, you have to use their directions. If you try to use your GPS, you will not get to this destination. Second, there is a list of rules as long as my... arm for this place. Quiet hours, trash, what you can burn, tubing, etc. The funniest part of this is the quiet hours. You see, it is a gorgeous camping site that runs along the New River. BUT (HUGE BUT here) not only is there a train that runs on the other side of the river, BUT there is a train that runs about fifty yards from the camping site and crosses the entry road to the site. This means that at 3am, 4am, 5am there can be a mile long train filled with coal that must announce its presence. I think the conductor takes pleasure in this, as he will be very liberal with his warning horn usage. Also, with ample signage around the campsite to remind you, be aware that it is against the law to drink alcohol in public. This was fine around the site itself, but we had to do some shucking and jiving after taking a cooler with us down the tube float. There were police all over the tubing exit issuing citations to people with coolers of empty cans or water bottles with liquor. The majority of the staff was a real pleasure to deal with, save Dave the manager who seemed to have lost his sense of humor in the river. At roughly twenty bucks a night to camp and nine bucks to tube for the day, it was a relatively inexpensive weekend with a beautiful view and serene sound that is frequently thrown into an auditory and visual assualt with every passing train.

It wiped out their entire campground, leveled their bathhouse, and even moved their office building several feet. Many of their sites were out of commission. This left very poor conditions, and their recovery planned involved the use of a few port-a-shower/toilets. The water barely trickled and was only cold. We could not stay there. The caretaker of the campground appeared understanding and said that he would have my money refunded for the week. That STILL has NOT happened! They don't respond to phone calls, voice mails, or emails. Definitely beware of businesses like this!!!! I am sorry to have to give them 1-Star.

There is no gravel, stone, or dirt pad for your vehicles or camper; everything is just on grass, which just gets really wet and messy evenings and morning. Because of all the grass it's super buggy, too. That's all part of camping, though, so I wouldn't have rated only two stars for that. We were supposed to have an electric hookup, but it didn't work. The "restrooms" (plumbed port-a-potty's with a shower and sink) were really icky, with standing water and mud on the floor, no electrity so no lights, and the toilet paper ran out after one day there. The pictures online are NOTHING like the campground actually appears now, and I wish I would have looked for online reviews before booking. If you don't want to be woken up with a loud, close train whistle every couple of hours or more, this is not the location for you. The guy who runs the place, Dave, was nice. The place just isn't.

Fancy Gap Cabins And Campground - All of our cabins have queen beds with bedding. Two of our six cabins have bunk beds as well. The other four have futons.

They offer several individual bathrooms, all with their own private showers. Spotlessly clean, too! As for the RV spots, there aren't many, and they're not very private, but that's okay for a night. The cabins are clean and comfortable, however they have no running water, so you'll be enjoying the aforementioned restrooms and showers. Beautiful setting, with a stunning sunset view. They also offer WiFi, which is something of a rarity along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

I decided on the motel based on Yelp reviews and because we were not camping but on our way to Washington DC, and Fancy Gap was the perfect place to stop on the way. I also wanted a private bathroom, so I did not choose a cabin. This campground/cabins/motel is located about 6 miles off of Interstate 77, with the Blue Ridge Parkway within view and the Blue Ridge Mountains in the background. The motel is located up a quite steep gravel hill maybe about 1/4 mile from the campground and cabins, so it was much quieter than the campground area, which had quite a few noisy kids. The motel room was tiny (basically like a cabin but with a shower just large enough to stand in, toilet and sink) and very clean. We did see 2 spiders, but that is to be expected in the woody, outdoor setting. I appreciated the ample-sized refrigerator with a little freezer and microwave, but there was no table, chair, or even beside table in the room, so we had to eat at the picnic table (with a fire pit next to it), situated on the steep hill. It is a beautiful woods-surrounded setting, but hard to balance perched on the hill, pretty buggy, and would have not worked well if it had been raining. We enjoyed viewing the sunset and mountains in the distance while sitting in the rocking chairs on the front porch, sipping green tea and hot chocolate provided by the motel. It was quite warm during the June day, but in the evening, it got quite chilly. The A/C worked well as did the heater at night, so we were comfortable. The queen bed was neither comfortable nor uncomfortable. My son said the futon was pretty comfy, but we had to bring our own bedding for it, or we would have had to pay extra. The biggest negative about this motel are the extremely thin walls--thankfully the people next door settled down about the same time we did because it sounded like we had roommates with only thin walls and locked connecting door separating us, and i felt bad every time the floor loudly creaked when I got up in the night and early morning. Also, we were looking forward to walking the wooded trails around the campground, but they were not well-maintained and overgrown, so our walk was pretty short. We did enjoy a short walk through their apple orchard.
