I have written harsh reviews for Gould's Discount Medical in the past. I decided it was about time…read moreto update my review and raise my rating of this business. I still can't give it five stars because there are a few things that this business really needs to improve upon. This Spring /Summer I was trying to get all the medical equipment that I would need after my total knee replacement. I had recommendations from my Physical Therapist and also from the Orthopedic surgeon's office. After doing some research I knew that I needed a bariatric foldable walker, and a bariatric bedside commode. Originally I thought I would order them online. My husband and I decided to go to Gould:s not to purchase from them but to see in person the items we were thinking of ordering. Upon arrival at the store there was a single file line formed to be waited on. Not knowing if the line was for oxygen patients we asked at the register if we could look at the different walkers and commodes. The clerk nicely advised us to get in line. OK, but we were still planning on just looking and not purchasing at this time. By the luck of the draw when it was finally our turn we got a really nice gentleman. We first inquired about bariatric foldable walker. We didn't indicate we were not planning on buying it at that time. Our reasoning for this was I had assumed they would be higher priced than the internet. The gentleman went away to a back room for a few minutes and came back with the walker adjusted perfectly for my height. It fit me perfectly so we sat down to find out how much it was going to cost. The first step the employee took was to check if my insurance would allow an outright purchase or would it need to be a rental. After pulling up my information that was stored in their computer and updating my insurance info it turned out I was allowed to purchase it. So it turns out that the walker that was priced $154. would only be $99. which was the negotiated insurance price. Then the gentleman calculated my co-pay and it turned out my out of pocket price was $4. total. What! Of course we would buy it from them. The only catch was they needed a prescription from the doctor to qualify. We left and I contacted the doctor for the prescription which was faxed to Gould's. Then the bad news came. An employee from Gould's called and said my insurance would not cover the purchase because I'm not 300 lbs. It's true I'm nowhere close to that weight but my body shape doesn't fit the small walkers. If we bought it from them I couldn't even get the negotiated price. Unfortunately enough days had passed and time was of importance so my husband said we should just go ahead and buy it. When we went back and went to the check out register the price wouldn't pull up so the clerk called a supervisor over. The supervisor just pulled a price out of thin air so it was close to the insurance negotiated price of $99. I am frustrated but I also can't fault them that my insurance only caters to people over 300 lbs. I wish the person that initially handled our inquiry knew that was going to be a problem. Note: I never got them involved in the bedside commode because I found the perfect one online.

However, she told me I would be paying $50 a month for ten months then it would be paid for. Unfortunately that was not the truth. It was actually a 12 month contract. When I tried calling the company to get a copy of the original contract (which I did not receive) I never received any calls back until I got a late bill with a $5 late fee. I had to call about that. Profuse apologies and a retraction of the late fee. Since my insurance was billed and paid for their portion of the 12 month contract I just had to assume that the original associate did not know the contract. Next problem. I called 3 weeks ago to order supplies before the year end and before 2019 deductible kicked in. Needless to say, no supplies and no one answering the phone today. The voice mail said to leave a message then looped to put me on hold. I had to start pushing random numbers to be able to leave a message. (Try the number 2 button). If this was not the only company my insurance works with, I would definitely use someone else!

I anticipated just going in and being handed the equipment, asked for payment, and sent on my way. Kathy, the respiratory therapist, blew me away! She was so kind and considerate. She asked if my test results had been explained and went over all of them. She was patient in showing me the equipment options and answering my questions. She told personal stories to make me feel more at ease. She offered to bill my insurance company before expecting a payment up front. (Insurance has certain requirements but these are for your own health as well.) She truly was remarkable and I can't recommend her or thank her enough!

However when the payment was due they drafted my HSA 3x the contract amount. They said my insurance did not cover anything and that was my new price. The billing dept agents were argumentative and aggressive. I eventually got a supervisor that was no better. I did manage to get a refund to my HSA pending an actual billing statement. I terminated my account and returned my cpap immediately. The next day they drafted my account again. The rep was again absolutely rude.. said the notes to my account didn't reflect my request to terminate and the billing supervisor I spoke with did not exist and did I think to get his last name and ext?! I eventually made my way again and with great exertion to an escalation representative named Riley Barbero. Riley was a professional person and the only human of sense and manners that I had spoken to..she refunded my account again and terminated my card authorization and provided documentation. Sidebar to the customer service aspect.. fyi the humidifier that is a part of the cpap machine and must be used for the cpap to hold pressure...is a separate charge all together for its use!!! I mean come on! And that was also not disclosed nor was the charge authorize. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE if you like your money and your peace.

The sales rep I have worked with during this time is always responsive when it comes to potential sales but consistently almost completely unresponsive whenever repairs or customer service is required. In my case, this turned out to be quite frequent since both the machine and monitor required repairs within the first 8 months of use. It is essentially like pulling teeth to get DRE to respond to any service needs, but whenever a potential sale is at hand, my sales rep all of a sudden responds within minutes. Recently I was in the market for another anesthesia monitor. I received a quote from DRE Medical. After receiving a much better quote from a competing company, I decided to go with the other option. At the same time, I needed my original DRE monitor repaired and sent that in. Even after having it on hand at their facility for over three weeks, DRE has failed to even begin any repairs. After I inquired a few times for a status update on my monitor's repair, the sale rep refused to interact with me any longer. I believe she and DRE are slow to service my equipment due to their awareness that it is unlikely I will purchase new equipment from them again, having found a more competitive option elsewhere. I understand that DRE is a business, and hence new sales are quite important to them. But consumers of course prefer to work with vendors of integrity who take care of them even after money has changed hands.
