Nothing is impossible New York! Knicks, you healed this city through your blood, sweat and tears and this born & raised NYer couldn't be more grateful. Thank you and see you at the parade!

The hope is back and his name is Jalen Brunson. The second bit of hope is Karl Anthony Towns. Tough trade last year to lose a few key guys like Julius Randle but I have faith in this team even more now. I attended the Roommates Live Block Party over the summer, it was fun: Bridges was there and new Knick Jordan Clarkson and Ben Stiller was there as a guest. The crowd was into it at Central Park and everyone seemed to have a good time. Knicks are in a different direction since in 2019, Kristaps Portzingis was traded from NY to Dallas for a package that included two first round draft picks, Dennis Smith Jr. And DeAndre Jordan. Knicks were concerned about his injury history and in 2019, Kristaps expressed his desire to leave and told someone in management that he no longer wanted to be part of the team anymore. Years later, he did seem to regret a bit how things were handled. He was seen as a Knockout sensation of a star and was not expected to leave the team.

In my lifetime, the New York Knicks have only made it to the NBA Finals twice, in 1994 and 1999. Since '99, the Knicks have missed the playoffs more often than not. For decades, the Knicks have notoriously underperformed despite being in the NBA's biggest market (the top three are New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago). To their credit, though, the Knicks won two NBA championships, in 1970 and 1973. The Knicks were one win away from winning the title in 1994. They lost, 4-3, to the Houston Rockets. The Knicks had Patrick Ewing, John Starks, Derek Harper, and Charles Oakley. They also had current North Carolina coach Hubert Davis. The Rockets had Hakeem Olajuwon, Vernon Maxwell, Robert Horry, and Sam Cassell. They also had now-popular NBA on TNT commentator Kenny Smith. The Knicks were coached by Pat Riley, who won five NBA titles as a head coach, but not during his time with the Knicks (1991-1995). The Rockets were coached by Rudy Tomjanovich, who led Houston to back-to-back titles in '94 and '95. The Knicks with Ewing and Starks were my favorite team to play as in NBA Jam (great balance). I remember the 1999 Finals well and have all five games on VHS tape. That's because the San Antonio Spurs are my favorite NBA team. The NBA on NBC was still a thing back then. The Spurs beat the Knicks, 4-1. The Knicks didn't have an answer to the Spurs' Twin Towers, Tim Duncan and David Robinson. Ewing suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the Eastern Conference Finals, leaving Larry Johnson, Marcus Camby, Kurt Thomas, and Chris Dudley to try and contain Duncan and Robinson. The Knicks relied heavily on Latrell Sprewell and Allan Houston for offense. I still remember jumping, pumping my fist in the air, and accidentally hitting my relatives' chandelier when the Spurs' Avery Johnson hit the championship-winning jumper in Game 5. The Knicks were coached by Jeff Van Gundy, who went on to become one of my favorite announcers during his time with ESPN/ABC. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich won the first of five titles. A little bit of trivia: Mario Elie was a member of both the '94 Rockets and '99 Spurs teams. Check out Game 5 of the 1999 NBA Finals on YouTube while you can. The New York-San Antonio Twin Towers intro, narrated by NBC's Bob Costas, will send chills down your spine: https://youtu.be/BY32q6Y0yS4?si=kQ_dTOC3Kah2eVbR After that, the most memorable iteration of the Knicks to me was the Carmelo Anthony era, 2011-2017. In those seven seasons, the Knicks only made it to the playoffs three times. In those three appearances, they only advanced past the first round once, in 2013, when they lost, 4-2, to the Indiana Pacers. That Knicks team had several talented players -- Melo, JR Smith, Raymond Felton, and Tyson Chandler. Amar'e Stoudamire was also on the team, but was injured for most of the season. Notably, both Marcus Camby and Kurt Thomas were on the Knicks roster that season too, as well as Iman Shumpert, who played for my favorite college basketball team (Georgia Tech). I should also note that I own a New York Knicks Jeremy Lin name and number T-shirt (shirsey) because of Linsanity in February 2012. Recently, the Knicks developed a little animosity towards my hometown Atlanta Hawks because of Trae Young and the 2021 playoffs. The Knicks lost to the Hawks, 4-1, in the first round. The Knicks were led by a resurgent Derrick Rose, Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, and Alec Burks. However, the Hawks, led by Trae Young, Bogdan Bogdanovic, John Collins, De'Andre Hunter, and Clint Capela, simply outplayed the Knicks. It's no secret that many Knicks fans hate Trae Young. If you're not aware, watch this video of Knicks fans talking about Trae after the Knicks got eliminated in 2021: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zpZ2tiB0xg Haha. This year, the Knicks were memorable to me for a couple of reasons: (1) On March 29, 2024, Jalen Brunson went off for a career-high 61 points against the Spurs. It was only one point off the franchise's single-game scoring record. More importantly, it helped me pull off a huge upset in my fantasy basketball league playoffs semifinals match. I drafted Brunson back in October and he ended up being one of the keys to my team's eventual championship. (2) The Knicks and Pacers had an entertaining seven-game series in the Eastern Conference semifinals. On May 19, 2024, the Knicks were on the verge of advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 24 years (coincidentally, they faced the Pacers in the 2000 ECF). Unfortunately, they lost Game 7 at home, 130-109, in front of a star-studded crowd at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks just had too many injuries and the Pacers' depth prevailed.

Well, that's not completely correct. I actually knew it when my friend first mentioned it. How could Roller Derby not be an amazing night? It was already packed by the time we showed up, and we kind of had to squeeze in to get seats. If we had been more than two people, we probably would have had to split up. Now to the action, Gotham Girls Roller Derby is no f*cking joke. These girls are out to bust some asses. And, of course, my former borough of Queens showed the Bronx who is boss. But they didn't ask me to show any body parts :-( , not sure who got the better of that one... lol definitely something that everyone should do.

More to the point, rather than having been seen celebrating after the game ended, Ionescu should have been hiding in deep embarrassment, having shot 1/19, or a bit more than 5%. Good grief, any number of top women's college basketball players would have performed much better. Also, while the Liberty clearly won't do so, she should be traded, perhaps to position for a some high draft choices. As a player, she has more liabilities than she does assets. As for Stewart, as good as she's been in the WBNA, that was the second game in a row of terrible shooting percentage.

Wow, I can't believe there hasn't been a review of the New York Liberty (NYL) for a decade. "It…read more[the drought of reviews] ends today." -- Neo in "The Matrix: Revolutions." Hopefully, too, the lack of even a single championships during the franchise's entire existence. The NYL, like a lot of New York basketball franchises (cough, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks), has until recently been on hard times. It wasn't always that way. The NYL started auspiciously as one of the marquee franchises of the WNBA, whose first game was between NYL and the Los Angeles Sparks in 1997, following the United States National Women's Basketball Team's unreal showing at the Olympics and a year-long string of global exhibition matches where they went entirely undefeated (60-0). Source: Sara Corbett, Venus to the Hoop: A Gold Medal Year in Women's Basketball (New York: Anchor Books, 1998). But after a few terrific seasons featuring Hall of Famers Rebecca Lobo, Becky Hammon, and Theresa "T-Spoon" Weatherspoon -- and repeat finals appearances that kept ending in heartbreak -- the franchise sort of ended up in two-decades of purgatory. Two low points: hiring sexual harasser Isiah Thomas as team president and getting banished from Madison Square Garden to the "Westchester County Center" (what?!?!), almost an hour away from NYC and inaccessible to most. It looked like the Liberty were on their way to become a perpetual basement team and dysfunctional, to boot, under the ownershp of legendarily incompetent James Dolan, to whom the New York Knicks also belong (no championship since 1973). Then a white knight came along. Imagine a minotaur (half man, half horse). the horse looks like he'd have no trouble winning the Kentucky Derby by at least a minute and the "man" looks like a chiseled statue: chiseled pectoral muscles, a six-, no, let's make it an eight-pack. That white knight-minotaur is JOE TSAI, CEO of global tech conglomerate Alibaba. He buys the team. He fires Isiah Thomas. And he instantly injects professionalism and INVESTMENT, resulting in a return to a premiere venue (Barclays Center in Brooklyn), then to the playoffs, and finally, the landing of three Hall of Fame players. Wait, you didn't really think a review of a women's basketball team in a pathbreaking women's basketball league was going to end with some male hero nonsense, right? Give me a break. True Liberty fans know that the real driving force isn't J. Tsai but CLARA WU TSAI, who executive produced a historical documentary called UNFINISHED BUSINESS about the league and the team and who played an instrumental role in getting Breanna Stewart, who will likely be the greatest basketball player who ever lived by the time she retires on the team. Cite sources? OK, how's this for a source? Link: https://twitter.com/Lvallejocolom/status/1618304157496274945 CWT, as I call her, has been great in setting a new standard for other WNBA teams, many of them shamelessly cheap (and sexist, by extension). They've built immaculate practice facilities, have fought the league on its stupid travel policies that have the world's greatest athletes traveling in cramped economy class on commercial flights, and most of all, aren't afraid of investing in the team and treating it with the respect it deserves, not as some disposable property. The result has been big-ticket player signings. Besides Stewart, there's the acquisition by trade of Jonquel Jones (who specifically requested NYL as a destination), along with Courtney Vandersloot, plus the ongoing development of #1 pick Sabrina Ionescu and a squad of stellar role players: a big in UConn great and WNBA champion Stefanie Dolson, and a "sniper" and elite passer in Marine Johannes (French). Rounding it all out is the team's "cultural steward" Betnijah Laney, a complete two-pay player unafraid to do unheralded dirty work and defend tenaciously, 6 foot 10" tower Han Xu (who can also shoot), and two great defensive minded stoppers in Kayla Thornton and Jocelyn Willoughby. Will the NYL win this year? I'm not sure. These kinds of teams with stacked talent take time to reach full potential. (I've been particularly irked by the skittishness around giving Han Xu a bigger role, considering the comparisons she has drawn to Belgian big and elite shooter Emma Meeseman. But the turnaround has been remarkable, and I was so psyched that even though I have loved the Seattle Storm my whole WNBA watching life, I semi-converted to the NYL this year with a season ticket purchase. I do believe you will see a banner hung within the next 3 years as the talent continues to gel. L! I! B! New York Liberty! E! R! T! Y! New York Liberty!
