I told her those are always the best places cause they're focuses on the food not the cutlery. She's been coming here since the 80's. Boy was I right. 5:30 pm on a Sunday... The food and service was very, very disappointing. It took waaay too long to place our beverage orders and waaay too long to get them. I ordered a water, which came in a very tall, thin paper cup that collapsed when attempting to pick it up, causing the water to spill. I ordered the fried sea scallops and some onion rings which were a $6 up-charge). The sea scallops were TERRIBLE. They were cold, their texture was weird, and they did not taste like sea scallops. The onion rings were cold. I wanted to order a replacement for my cold onion rings, but the waiter never came over to inquire how our food was after it was served. I decided I would warm them up at home the next day. The sea scallops I left behind. My brother-in-law ordered the fish & chips. The French fries were hard, dry and cold. He did enjoy the sole. We had not been to Newick's in a few years. It is a 40 minute ride from our house. We both got the Smelt Plate with a separate order of onion rings. We also got the Mussels as an appetizer. Everything was fresh and cooked well. The food was not greasy so you know the oil is clean. The server was very good and friendly. Seafood is VERY expensive everywhere. So bad...so sad. I have been going to Newick's for 60 years. Today was my last visit. I have given them two trys this year prior to today which was the absolute worst. My meal consisted of a day old dry hamburger bun with a small amount of questionable lobster meat, cold hard French fries that I am sure were heated with oil that needs to be changed, tasteless coleslaw and oh yeah, a pickle. This was a $40 takeout order for which I waited. I could not complete payment with my credit card until I either entered a 20%, 25% or 30% tip unless I cancelled the tip screen to complete the transaction. The parking lot was empty, 6 giggling teenage employees were milling about at the front counter waiting for customers. Now I know why. read more

The food was just ok, the service not so much. I visited Newick's many times back in the 80s and 90s and it was always packed for such a massive sized dining room. We visited this past Sunday, June 28th and we were all very dissapointed. The service was horribly slow. The prices they charge (quite high) are more in line with a high-end fine dining establishment, not a Sunday picnic. The eating utensils are plastic- ware, they serve the food in a plastic basket, and the beverage cups are thin-walled paper cups that collapse when you hoist it to drink. We recently returned from a vacation in Falmouth and Martha's Vineyard and dined at several seafood restaurants while there. One would think that being on the cape, in a tourist area, that the prices would be significantly higher than Newick's. That was not the case. For an example, a pound-and-a-half of steamers at Newick's was $10 ($36) more than the same amount of Steamers in both Falmouth and the Vineyard. Newick's had tried expanding years ago and they ended up closing their other locations. Unless Newick's truly values their customers and desires to continue in business, they need some drastic changes to their operation. My advice, save your money and dine elsewhere until they fix things. read more

Red flag warning! should've walked out then. Welcome fly! and they were thick on the windows, imagin in the kitchen Walking over your food. Coleslaw was actually warm to the touch through the little paper cup. Red flag. Wanted a simple clam roll, but it said it was served on a bulky. ( no hotdog roll?) This place was recommended as we were from out of town. I know this is a pretty popular place especially for college students, but for being out of town and craving Maine delights, i was truly disappointed! First, the shrimp cocktail was not crisp/firm... the texture was mushy compared to what a good shrimp cocktail should be. The texture of the pickle chips were soft as well and should be crispy as a fried item should be. I only tasted claw meat in the lobster roll. The lobster cake was ok though. I wasn't expecting paper and plastic wear but maybe that was the vibe. The best thing I tasted was the Lobster Sauvignon Blanc , which is from the Marlboro region in New Zealand. This place did not meet my expectations for $150+ plus meal. Sorry, i usually praise restaurants but i was disappointed being that we were in lobster country. Service was great! read more

Great views! Great portions!! Prices are fairly high. The TURNOFF- I had an appetizer of Steamed Clams, which was excellent! When dinner came (fettuccine with shrimp), 1 small garlic knot came with it. I asked for just one more to finish meal, the bill, $175(with tip-for two), came with a $1.00 charge for garlic knot. Now, I am not opposed to paying that price, as the food was worthy. But, but, paying that, to be charged $1.00 for 1 more hunk of dough is just insane with a $175 bill. Come on folks: season is over; to add this is certainly a good reason to NOT return, out of principle. Give up the $.8 cents it costs you to make it. read more

I came to Newick's as a UNH student 50 years ago. Ordered either whole belly calms, lobster, or fishermen's platter. All plates were delicious then not so much now. The calms were tasteless. The calms themselves did "not taste of the ocean." The vegetables were boiled string beans and carrots. Boiled? Boiled in water! No seasoning. Just boiled water. The coleslaw was cabbage and some nondescript dressing. All foods were served in their own individual paper containers. There is no ambience, as its red and white checker plastic table coverings and you're provided plastic utensils. My partner had a baked potato and she said it was good. Sour cream came in a plastic sleeve as did her butter. This is just an abnormal way to serve people food. I think it's disrespectful and frankly, overcharging for food prepared poorly. But the restaurant sits right on the banks of the Great Bay. It's view overlooking it is fantastic. That's it. Our server was polite yet I felt like I was chattel. Now, within the restaurant there is an ice cream store which has delicious ice cream. read more

The clams in the chowder were super chewy and rubbery. Spit several out, jaw was getting tired and needed to be ready for the entrees. The steamers were not only rubbery, they were HUGE, and full of sand. My wife kept cringing listening to me eat sand. The lobster pie for $45 makes me cringe. I should have asked what the market price was. I think there was more weight in the cracker crumbs than there was in lobster. The beer was warm. Drove 10 hours and spent $208 for the biggest disappointment of the weekend which used to be the "highlight". And the bathrooms?? Every time we come they have changed the front end, I'm thinking they are afraid to update because the pumping is so old it will cost a fortune. By the latest reviews. I feel they are overcharging and running the place in the ground and trying ti make their last profits before they lock the doors. We were there in a Saturday night, and the place was empty. It's a very big room, which was nice because we were distanced from others dining and were able to get a window seat so we could see the water. Service was good, although it took awhile for refills to come. We were given a really large serving of calamari which seemed a little overkill, but was really nice. We ate there tonight (4:30) I asked about the big bellied clams and there hadn't been any negatives. I guess this is not the season for these juicy clams and the market price is high right now. They weren't any different than the clam strips my cousin ordered. Service was outstanding for our large group. The ambiance has mixed use and layout from place for families to get together to more of a bar vibe later, I'm guessing. I've eaten steamers and fried clams since childhood and our server was right saying they buy fresh every day and buy what the clamdiggers are able to get. I guess if they're tiny, don't offer them fried as big-bellied clams. Newick's has always had great food. It's a tough business for restaurants and fisherman alike. read more

We were visiting New Hampshire, to celebrate a dear friend. Dinner here was terrific! Split the seafood platter with the kiddo; fish tacos, Cajun haddock, and buffalo tenders rounded out our table. Restaurant looks as charming as it always does when I come with my family every year. July 2025 My wife and I have lived on the Seacoast for the last 45 years. We hadn't been to Newick's in at least 10 years. We went last night to celebrate my wife's 66th BD. I was very sad to realize that the Newick's I knew years ago was nothing like it is now... We each had one drink. She ordered steamed clams. I ordered the special, muscles. She was served about 10 clams, all extremely large with big rubber necks which she couldn't eat can't stand. My muscles were good, yet 6 of them were not opened, which lead me to believe they were undercooked. The service was fine, however the food and price tag was not. Our bill came to $80. I would have to agree with my wife who said; " I will never go to Newick's again." Seriously, what happened to the Newick's we could take the family to for good seafood at a reasonable price? For a water side, seafood experience, Newick's fits the bill. Exactly what you'd expect from such a place. Good service, with outstanding upsell skills. Hubby ordered Clam Chowder, and my one taste told me how amazingly delicious it was! He also had the Lobster stuffed Haddock with Cole slaw and potato. He enjoyed, but said it did not need the Lobster. The waitress convinced him it was worth it. I wanted lobster, but not all the bread of a roll, and don't want to crack shell, so ordered the "famous" Lobster "Stew". Again, the waitress convinced me to order a bowl rather than a cup for only $4. more. What arrived was, admittedly, a HUGE portion of Lobster that was tasty, in a "broth" of cream and butter. LOTS of cream and butter. In fact, it was so much cream and butter broth that I left behind a whole cup of it after I ate all the lobster. About $4. worth. Just saying...it was NOT stew. Had not eaten at Newick's for years. We just happened to be in the area on 6/26. Service was great. The prices were outrageous!! Fried clams/scallop combo was $50. A side of onion rings was $11.A platter of seafood was $54. Very expensive. We did share the seafood platter. Whole belly clams barely had a belly. They more like clam strips with a tiny belly. A few weeks before, we were in Ogunquit, Maine. We went to a local downtown restaurant. The fried clam/scallop combo was $32. And they had whole belly clams that actually had bellies!! As a local family, Newick's has been a fan-favorite for generations. They've been evolving a bit with the times, adding a bar and an ice cream window to their footprint. We were a party of 9 and met here for dinner while some of us (including myself) were in town for wedding festivities throughout the week and had a nice dinner here that was enjoyed by all. Getting here was fairly easy and parking is abundant. The establishment has a very large interior with with lots of room and seating. We were seated in the main dining area and had a table that was close by to the windows where we were able to gaze at the nice views of the surrounding water (Piscataqua River and Great Bay). Service was great and the food came out in a timely manner. We all enjoyed the food and drinks. On this visit I went with a couple items Jack's Abby Lager Newick's Famous Lobster Stew Great but not excellent. A little under-seasoned for my taste and a little too creamy. Good chunks of meat! But, when in New England...any type of stew or chowdah is a must! Petite Lobster Roll Good sized with plenty of meat. Roll needed to be a little bit more crisped up but good nonetheless. My family has been coming to Newick's for ages. It's perfect for seafood lovers (my dad always gets the steamers and lobster, my mom and aunt usually go for scallops, and my husband and I love the lobster roll). Today we also got two cups of the thick clam chowder and a serving of fried clam strips. Everything was so good! We love sitting and looking over the water, especially on a beautiful clear day. This is not a fancy place by any means, but it's perfect for our family and has great memories. Usually I try to only do 5 star ratings to veer the masses to positive experiences;) And let me start off by saying our waitress Kelly was amazing and the clam chowder was not bad. But this is a dirty (bachelor nasty) super unclean restaurant . As for being known for their lobster stew, zero flavor on the stew part, we ended up taking ALL the lobster meat and dumping it into the clam chowder in order to have some "taste" while we ate it. The haddock augratin was nothing more than the fish and potatoes baked with a "shell" of ritz crackers on top, again NO flavor. And please DON'T get the lobster rolls if you've ever eaten ones you like, and hopefully you aren't trying these for the 1st time, and deduce these are how others will taste. read more

It's been a long time since I have eaten at Newicks. It hasn't changed a bit. Arrived around 245 on a Saturday afternoon. Was seated right away. I had Stephanie for my server and she was very good. I started with the lobster stew, which was very good and just like I remembered it. Then I had a lobster roll but skipped the sides that usually come with it. And I finished with the fried seafood platter. Which as you can see is huge. The platter came out piping hot. So when you eat at a place like Newicks don't go in there with any expectations. We were looking for a place for dinner nearby our hotel on a Sunday night. Many places closed early. We wanted a place with outdoor seating and I found Newick's on Yelp. We got there at 7:20 and they were no longer seating people outdoors. Only indoor dining was available; I still don't feel comfortable as the pandemic rages on. I spotted a picnic table near the DMV along the way so we opted for take out. Newick's had lots of families and couples and seemed like the place that had lots of regulars. The inside looks like an old ship. The carpet was worn after decades of use no doubt. The prices are reasonable with moderate plus sized portions. Our order was ready in ten minutes and we headed to that picnic bench, not wanting to eat in our hotel. They forgot my sister's orange drink. I ordered the kid sized chicken tenders platter and fries which was above average for fried food. The chicken was tender and tasty and the skinny fries were above average. My sister gave a thumbs up to her fried haddock sandwich and fries. My mother however found her clam chowder and lobster salad to be flavorless. The soup tasted like hot milk thrown over potatoes and few bits of clam, according to her. She gave her lobster in the salad a seven, but the salad itself was thrown together and there was not even a lemon wedge as dressing. We went back and told them we never received the orange drink and that my mother was unhappy with the clam chowder. They promptly refunded the two items. Overall, I guess their 3.5 rating is fair. I don't like seafood. My friend however was very excited to go here. We had gone many years ago just after college. Our waitress was great. She was young, super polite, and although the kitchen messed up and they seemed under staffed and they were cleaning around us, she stayed calm, attentive, and just nice. One of us got a lobster. She said it was perfect (but a little hard to crack) and she got oysters. She was in heaven. I got chicken tenders and onion rings. The tenders were shockingly great. Like I might order them from here in the future good. It was nice to look out at the river, but the tossing chairs on tables all around us left a bit to be desired.
