Stone Mountain officially opened as a public park in 1965. However, people had been coming here…read morelong before it became an international phenomenon. It was a ceremonial and meeting place for Native Americans up until the 1800's when Aaron Cloud built a 165 foot wooden tower on top of the mountain, charging a small fee to climb it until it blew over a few years later. The railroad surrounding the mountain was once upon a time used to haul granite quarried from the mountain all over the world. It is said that nearly every state has at least one building (likely a government building) using stone from this mountain. In 1958, the State of Georgia purchased the mountain and the land surrounding it. Soon after, a sky lift, train, riverboat, memorial hall, museum, golf course, beach and even hotels opened on the grounds, making stone mountain a premier tourist destination. In the same year of its official open, two historic structures were brought to the park to serve as their permanent home. There's 2 Pay stations which helps with the line as the App here sometimes gets funky. Street parking has a fee as with the parking garage for $6. The Decatur Train Center is in close proximity.

Georgia was once full of covered bridges, most built between the late 1700 - 1800's. Sadly decay,…read morefloods and even purposeful mutilation have done away with most of these treasures. There are less than 20 remaining in the state, but in 1997 the County of Rockdale boldly decided to add another to the numbers. Probably more popularly known as the Rockdale County Covered Bridge, it spans a full 150 feet over a historic ford where Mill Rock Creek is located. Jack Turner Dam was to be completed in 1998 to form a reservoir by impound the water from neighboring creeks and rivers. Engineers calculated the creek would swell from just a few inches deep to several feet, thus a bridge would be required. Nearby is also an old historic mill house, a general store, the old mill site and a blacksmith shop according to the Rockdale County website. However, the only visible buildings I saw south of the bridge were clearly marked with no trespassing signs. There is a trail on the north side of the bridge that allows for better side view pictures, but vegetation has grown enough to block most of the view except the very center of the span. FINAL THOUGHTS The County spent almost $900,000 completing the wooden bridge and designed it to look similar to other Town & Lattice styled bridges from the 1800's. It took 248 cubic yards of concrete and 31,000 lbs of steel to form the base columns for the bridge. It utilized Georgia wood and labor in hopes of promoting new timber bridge technology. But after 17 short years, I could see some obvious wear on the bridge floor and need of repairs. Still, it's a marvelous structure, even if it's not exactly historic.

It reads, "Oliver Norvell Hardy, of the comedy team Laurel and Hardy, lived in the Turnell-Butler Hotel which once stood on this corner. He was born in Harlem, Georgia, on January 18, 1892. The family was in Madison by that February, and may have moved here earlier. Mrs. Hardy later opened a hotel in Madison named The Hardy House. Oliver began his education at age six at the Madison Grammar School. Mrs. Hardy and her children left Madison in October 1898. Oliver Hardy died in 1957 and is buried in California where a plaque reads: "His Talent Brought Joy and Laughter To All the World."" Hardy was born Norvell Hardy, taking the name Oliver later to honor his father, a Confederate veteran who died less than a year after Hardy's birth. Though he began formal education in Madison, Hardy was restless and drawn to performance. He attended Georgia Military College and later Young Harris College, but his real passion was music. He studied voice in Atlanta and sang in theaters for modest pay, sometimes skipping lessons to perform. Hardy's entry into film began in Jacksonville, Florida, where he worked as a cabaret singer and at the Lubin Manufacturing Company. He was often cast as a villain in silent shorts, and before teaming with Stan Laurel, he had a prolific solo career, appearing in dozens of films under the name Babe Hardy. Hardy married three times: first to Madelyn Saloshin, then Myrtle Reeves, and finally Virginia Lucille Jones, who remained with him until his death in 1957. He is buried at Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, California This is marker number 104-1. It was erected in 2002 by The Georgia Historical Society and the City of Madison. Dukes of Hazard (1978) You can see the General Lee on Elm Street in Covington jumping 157 feet into the air in the first episode. The Cannonball Run (1980) The city of Covington had to remove power lines around the square before filming the iconic plane landing scene. Friday the 13th VI (1986) The iconic hockey masked killer could be found stalking the Covington area and surrounding towns during this installment. My Cousin Vinny (1991) This Oscar winning film utilized many locations around Covington and Newton County to create the setting of a small town in Alabama. ‍ In the Heat of the Night (1988-1994) Covington was known as Sparta and home to Police Chief William Gillespie and police detective Virgil Tibbs in this long running crime drama. Footloose (2010) The courtroom scene in Footloose was filmed in the historic courthouse on Covington's square. Flight (2011) A church was erected and a broken aircraft was placed in Green Valley Farms fields, just a few miles outside of downtown Covington, to create the plane crash scene. Selma (2014) The iconic courthouse served as the Hotel Albert in the historical film recounting Dr. Martin Luther King's bid to secure voting rights for African Americans in Alabama. Vacation (2014) The sorority house scene in Vacation was filmed at one of Covington's many beautiful historic homes. ‍Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors (2015) Covington was the perfect picturesque backdrop for the television movie inspired by Dolly Parton's life story. Dr. Sleep (2018) The sequel to Stephen King's "The Shining" was filmed in Covington. I guess when NOLA got swamped with the Katrina aftermath, certain members of my family thought that Social Circle, GA was the only place they would be comfortable. Social Circle offers old plantation homes, somewhat older indigenous families, great food, a few bars and a lot of southern charm. From the beautifully weeping willow lined streets and sidewalks to the super sweet southern charm, Social Circle is absolutely wonderful. Yes, it is true, there is not too much near Social Circle, but I am positive that is much of the charm. An off the beaten path kind of town that could easily be in a Stephen King novel, an episode of Vampire Diaries, maybe even the route people took toward Deliverance... it is a cool town. If you are looking for a spot not too far from the city of Atlanta, but far enough to feel like you are in a secret part of the old south, Social Circle is the place for you.
