Newton County, Georgia was established in 1821 and named after Revolutionary War hero Sergeant John Newton. The county seat was originally called Newtonsboro before being renamed in 1822 after General Leonard Covington, a War of 1812 figure, just eight months after its founding. The current courthouse was completed in 1884 in a Second Empire style after the previous courthouse was destroyed in a fire in 1883. It features a tall brick façade crowned by a black dome that dominates the Covington skyline. The mansard roof and ornate detailing add to the imposing verticality of the structure. Newton County has also played a role in film and television history. Covington served as a filming location for The Dukes of Hazzard, In the Heat of the Night, Remember the Titans, and The Vampire Diaries, among others. Today, I found parking a couple of blocks over.
