Perhaps the good folk of Bournville love nothing better than to feed their pets whilst eating ice cream and writing greetings cards. It sounds like Pleasantville. But to be fair, it kind of is. If you literally need a sugar hit, magazine or a drink then the selection on offer should tickle your fancy. The woman who works there barely cracks a smile but when you're just buying a kitkat.. who cares. Overall, handy little shop that's bound to have something you want for sale. Prices are pretty average, if you're looking for cheap deals you'd be better going to a supermarket.

Their range of products is exactly what you'd expect from a small newsagents, not selling an awful lot more than magazines (of which they have what I've found to be an exceptionally good selection), newspapers, sweets, drinks, and a few basic essentials, such as tea bags. All their prices are extremely fair, more than competing with the nearby Sainsburys, and, despite having been in numerous times and been served by several different people, the staff are always friendly. Lloyds News has a playful little symmetrical window display of Pot Noodles and paper coffee cups. Inside, Lloyds has everything you'd expect from a city centre newsagents - papers, pop, fags and mags. However, it's the quirky touches that make the place so good. I love the fact they have a £1.00 table in the centre of the shop, selling goody bags of sweets and chocolate. The staff are also friendly and helpful, adding to the character of the place. You'll struggle to find another newsagents quite like this in the city centre or anywhere in greater Birmingham for that matter!

For me this does affect the overall store as the stock is less, the store is more cramped and smaller in both sides as the average travel store would be. I came in here to grab a quick drink to take onto my train, the prices were higher than normal with it down to being a travel store. The manned till was empty and the store was really understaffed which meant a long wait time to redeem and sort out my coupon, which was frustrating as for me a travel store especially should be quick with a staff member on hand to help and there should always be at least one manned till for people who might struggle with one of the two self-service machines or wanting to buy something age restricted such as an energy drink. WHSmith is in pretty much every Railway Station, and although the stock is slight, size, service and overall feel is worse than other travel locations and price is perhaps nearer than nearby locations (remember Grand Central with a Tesco and many other retailers is right above New Street and this store) it still deserves at least two-stars for location and having a satisfactory beverage selection.

They do have a manned counter but this never seems to be in use, in favour of self-service machines, again this is one of the things which confuses me most about WHSmith as self-service machines isn't too good for the non-tech savvy elderly. 3* - Pretty good location for the NEC, Railway Station and Airport, but do plan ahead if you can to avoid this one.

Towards the back of the shop, they sell all of the basic foodstuffs and household products you'd expect, including bread, canned foods and washing up liquid. I was quite impressed with this shop, mainly because the lady who served me was really friendly and jolly. That said, they didn't stock my favourite chewing gum (Wrigley's Extra Ice White, for what it is worth). They did sell chilled Diet Coke in a can, which is the best drink in the whole wide world. What surprised and exciting me about this newsagents was the sweetie pick and mix that they have! How amazing is that? I really love sweeties (who doesn't?) and when I discovered this I was, well, like a grown up in a candy store. For this reason, I always return if I am in the area to fix my sugar cravings. I have always found the staff to be quite friendly in here too and they have often made small talk with me. The prices are standard for a newagents too. It is definitely worth a visit if you want some sweeties!
