I am very surprised to have been so pleased with all of the dishes we ordered here at NG Cafe. And the reason for that is because most Asian fusion restaurants have it's very obvious strengths and a surplus of weaknesses. NG Cafe has mostly Thai and Vietnamese entrees with some Chinese ones as well. So we decided to try a little bit of everything. First off, we ordered their Pork Banh Mi which was highly recommended. It was absolutely delicious. The bread was a perfect balance of crispy, flakey, and fluffy. The pork was seasoned, cooked, and portioned well. Definitely one of the best Banh Mi sandwiches you can find in the Austin area. We also ordered Drunken Noodles and Panang curry. Surprisingly, both of these dishes were delicious and full of authentic Thai flavors. Everything was so tasty and reasonably priced. This place is fantastic! It is a bit of a hole in the wall, but there were a decent number of people coming in and ordering. Seemed like a lot of people took stuff to go since there wasn't as many people dining in. This place seems to be a combo of Thai and Vietnamese food. I ordered the Green Thai Curry with Chicken and was given a complimentary bowl of egg drop soup. Everything tasted delicious and the service was great. The owners seem very nice and kind. One of my friends got some Ube cheesecake dessert which he really enjoyed. We were looking for different restaurants to try during this COVID-19 social distancing time period and thought we would give this restaurant a try. We had our food delivered via UberEats. We got the veggie rolls which were crispy without being greasy. The veggie roll had a light subtle taste which I appreciated. For our main meal we ordered the basil fried rice, red curry, yellow curry, and Pad Thai. My favorite dish was the basil fried rice which consisted of basil, mushrooms, chicken and red bell peppers. It was subtle and not greasy and absolutely delicious (We had some issues lately with some very greasy food at another restaurant so this was refreshing). Our kids liked the pad Thai. Again, the taste was subtle enough that they ate it without complaint. The Yellow curry was very good and filled with yummy potatoes and other veggies. It was not overpowering at all. My least favorite dish was the red curry which was very bland and watery. I won't order that again. This is the only reason this is 4 instead of 5 stars. We got the full baguette and the sesame hollow bread! YOU MUST GET THE BREAD! The baguette was delicious and the hollow bread was to die for!!! SO GOOD! NG cafe has the best banh mi sandwiches I've tried in Austin. I've been a long time customer since they were selling out of Hong Kong supermarket. I'm super thrilled that they have their own physical store now! I love that most of the food offerings are made in house from scratch, including the French baguettes and all their desserts. The quality of the banh mi sandwiches are always consistently high. My favorites are both the grilled pork and the shredded pork. They go very well with the pickled toppings. The french baguette tasted fresh and was warmly toasted. I've also tried their hot silken tofu as well as the cold. The hot tofu has a hint of ginger and a thin layer of syrup which melts perfectly in your mouth. The cold tofu is good for someone who likes coconut and is looking for a light dessert to cool your body on a hot summer day. Their sesame hollow bread is a must have pastry which I recommend to eat with either hot coffee or tea. They make a great pair! Eat here! One of our favorites in Austin- great food, delightful staff. Our favorite dishes are the Pad See Ew or Drunken Noodles (have had with chicken, pork, and shrimp- all good!) and the Orange Chicken. I really appreciate how seriously they took Covid precautions during the pandemic. They have a bakery counter inside, and the interior of the restaurant is so pleasant and calm. Truly an oasis. FYI I recommend calling in your takeout orders instead of placing them online. Well, the owners of that little sandwich shop are the new owners of Chang Thai and now not only offer the most delicious Banh Mi sandwiches (on incredible baguettes made from scratch on site), they also made the Thai food here even better than it was before. The grilled pork Banh Mi is made from pork loin, so it's lean and mean. The soup and salad bar at lunch is included in the price making this not only a delicious excursion, but a great value. NASTY!!! I ordered the yellow curry, and it was disgusting. I have eaten thai food hundreds of times. Dishes prepared by friends from Thailand. And this curry was a bowl full of raw spices that coated your tongue with gritty residue. The tofu was cold, and gelatinous . Not fried like it typically is. Massive raw of chunks of onion, and green peppers floting in this nasty broth of coconut milk and 20 table spoons of raw Turmeric. After 2 bites my lips were yellow and my throat was irritated. Could explain why there was 3 people in the sweltering heat of this filthy hole. $13.00 on what could possibly be the worst food I've ever put in my mouth. Absolutely inedible!!! read more

Was craving Pad Thai and saw that this place was well rated and nearby. Price was a little more than I usually pay ($11-$12 as opposed to $8-$9), but figured it would be worth it based on reviews. Unfortunately, I was disappointed by the Pad Thai. Not enough flavor, not sweet enough, absolutely no heat (ordered level 2), and texture of the noodles was off. I like my pad Thai to have a deeper and richer flavor, more sweetness and a slightly sticky texture to the noodles. I do think the portion size was perfect and all the elements were there (egg, bean sprouts, peanuts, and lime), plus plenty of chicken. It's definitely not the worst pad Thai I've had (once had one that tasted like ketchup), but I won't be returning for more. If you're looking for pad Thai, I'd recommend you go elsewhere. read more

Unfortunately, my most recent experience left me very sick due to my gluten allergy after trying something new this time and yeah I wanted share how to avoid feeling like I do if you have an allergy. I asked if the drunken noodles could be made gluten free and the kind lady at the counter confirmed that they would be, however, I called back after feeling itchy and nauseous after eating to see if they used regular soy sauce in the noodles, and they did:/ I recommend specifying clearer than I did in regard to what would contain gluten if you have an allergy (soy sauce is NOT gluten free, tamari is gluten free!). I ordered the Tom yum soup regular size, first of all I paid $9.50 and all I got was a small container, so I was shook, being that every other Thai restaurant gives you a twice the portion for that price! Then when I tasted it, it was sweet, barely any tart! I mean, I asked for it to be mild not too spicy, so I guess to them that means add sugar! I can't remember how long this place has been on my list to try, but finally, after years, I made the pilgrimage up North to NG Cafe. Gotta say, they have impeccable service and the staff are very friendly. Also free thai tea check in on yelp. Woot woot. The food is pretty great too, one of the best bahn mi I've had in Austin. The bread is exemplary - soft, crisp at the same time. The grilled pork one is definitely flavorful but I feel the pickled veg could be a bit more pickled for contrast. They also have self serve soup which is pretty good. Tom Yum and Tom Kha are both very good and unexpected perks to have with your sandwich for the perfect lunch experience.
