I was quoted $2300 to do the 50,000-mile service for my Hyundai Elantra at the dealership. I almost fainted and knew I had to look around to find a better deal. I actually asked Reddit and was recommended to come to Ngai's. I called them and they were so nice and helpful when asking for a quote. I was able to go through my manual with them and discuss the different services I could and should do for my car. I was originally quoted around $700 for the service, so I brought it in on a Monday afternoon to pick up on a Tuesday. I got a call around 11 am on Tuesday and was able to pick it up by 12:30 pm. It only ended up costing $400, so I was ecstatic. He could have easily charged me the $700, and I would have never known the difference. I took my car for transmission oil change and they took me in almost immediately. I was around most of the time when they were servicing my car and did not see them lift the car to gain access to the transmission fluid drain. The drain plug is hidden behind a metal sheet under the car and the technician has to lift the car, take off the metal panel, and open the valve to drain the fluid. They finished everything in about 40 minutes and they confirmed that they have drained and replaced the fluid. The car did not have a dipstick so I did not have a way to verify the quality of the replaced oils before I left the garage. I was in disbelief so I ended up taking it to another garage and asked them to change the fluid and to show me the old fluid. When they showed me it was old and dirty. I would not go back there again. read more

Called in the day before to get a quote to get my lower ball joints on my Lexus LX470 (100 series Land Cruiser) replaced and he gave me a really competitive quote 10 minutes later. I feel bad leaving a low rating after seeing how everyone else had such great experiences, but I feel my visit today wasn't worth 5 stars. So hear me out. I arrived around 3pm today, I called ahead to see if they were busy at the moment for an oil change because I was across the street. They said no, it should only take about 20 minutes. So after seeing all the good reviews, and being recommended by my girlfriend's family because they bring their cars here as well, I decided to drive over. When I got there, I didn't see anyone waiting, and they weren't busy on working on other cars. I did speak to Andy, (who is a cool guy by the way and knows his stuff, he's the only reason why I would come back, and I'm not leaving a 1 star review.) And let me know it shouldn't take too long, around 20 minutes only, which is the average time for an oil change. I'm a car guy myself, and I've been around cars for a while, even doing some of my own repairs and oil changes but I didn't have time to do so. So the other worker, I didn't catch his name (the bald one) starts working on the car about 5 to 10 minutes after they parked my car. Andy was busy attending to other things. 20 minutes go by, not finished. 30 minutes, still not finished. I left the shop at 4:55pm. When I brought this up, the girl in the office told me they were busy, and they have a fast turn around here. I'm not sure how a 50 minute oil change is a fast turnover. Not one person apologized for the inconvenience, because now I was late for work. I hope next time I come back the only person that touches my car is Andy. read more

I was referred by my friend to ask for ANDY. I have 2015 Dodge Charger R/T. I thought it was time to get new brake pads since I started hearing squeaking when pressing the brakes. I called in the morning and left a message. He called me back within 10 minutes. I arrived at his shop and he inspected my brake pads. He stated that I actually had 50% life in the pads. I went to start my 2003 Honda last week and the clutch went to the floor... and stayed there. Uh-oh. I had to head out of town, but today after reading through a lot of Yelp reviews, contacted a few and Andy was helpful when I called. He referred me to a towing service (they gave me a discounted rate--about half what I'd been quoted so far) and got my car to Ngai's in under an hour. Andy immediately noticed that the clutch fluid was contaminated, and called me with an estimate for the repair after inspecting the car. About 4 hours later, it was ready: new master/slave cylinders and the hydraulics flushed and fluid replaced. He showed me the original parts and the old fluid (which looked nothing like it should). I'd had the car serviced a couple months back and it appears that they put the wrong fluid in the brake system. Andy also inspected the transmission to make sure it wasn't damaged and I was out the door for a reasonable total cost. read more

It was around 15 years ago, a very long time and this review is majorly overdue. Back then Ngai's Auto did miracles, the affordability got me from the day one. These guys can really repair anything, today Number One is not around, it's his son Andy and daughter Jane that run the show now, they are fabulous, easy to talk to and confident. They do not charge an arm and a leg for repairs, for all of my car issues I come to them, oil changes, brakes, strange noises or just to chat. Great place, all taxies are serviced here as well as some city vehicles. Mountain of experience and love for their trade is where they shine the most. I ran over a nail and went in to get a tire patched here however my car was making odd sounds so I figured I would get that checked out as well. I told Andy I needed the tire patched and explained this noise to him and right off the bat he seemed certain it was the brake pads/rotors. To my understanding he was supposed to change front and rear break pads, fix my rotors, and patch the tire for $200. When I got back he had only changed the rear break pads and trimmed the rotors so I asked him about lowering the price due to the misunderstanding but he refused and said he would only put my old parts back on. I chalked it up as a loss and just paid the $200. On my drive back to LA, where I live, my car was still making the noise which I had asked him to fix and also shaking like crazy. This leads me to conclude that they did something wrong and also never inspected my car for the problem which I had described so me purchasing new brake pads and rotors from them was unnecessary. The few places I got to explain to me what the actual problems are and how he forgot to balance my tires/put the weights back on my car. I am forced to get this fixed on top of the not necessarily urgent services I received Ngai's Auto Repair. I've contacted Andy Ngai of Ngais' Auto Repair through phone and e-mail to explain my discontent with the service. I tried to come to a resolution which was for him to pay for my balancing and break inspection I had to purchase here in Los Angeles. I e-mailed him a copy of the receipt which was totaled to $50 and he e-mailed me back that he would pay for the balancing of one of my tires - $15 - along with half the break inspection "to be nice"- $10 - so a total credit card refund of $25 is all he offered at the end of it all. I highly recommend you take your car elsewhere. read more
