Two days after my discharge letter, I received another letter discharging my daughter as well. Hers was accompanied by a demand for payment on a 12.00 copay from an office visit we had less than a week prior. I called to inquire about the charge as I made a cash payment in the office at her visit however I was only able to leave a message for the finance person. Three days later, no return call I received a letter saying my daughter's account had been turned over to a collection company. I believe my insurance company is in the process of an investigation that may include some sanctions against the practice. The agent handling my claim implied this was not the first mistake of its kind reported from their practice.

They bill your insurance for appointments and classes --and bill YOU if you don't show up. I fully understand that a practice can't survive if patients don't show up, but how about making it easier for patients to be there in the first place? This is where it becomes a frustratingly, horrible experience for the patient. Their biggest weakness lies in their office management and in their software. A BIG CAUTION: If you have a tele-health appointment you will get an email reminding you; but they do not explain where to sign in for the tele-health appointment. If you have other doctors in the area, you know to go to your patient portal and this links you to the tele-health portal. But no, not Kukui LM Clinic, YOU are supposed to know (each time) that the email does not link you to the tele-health portal. The doctor is often late, so if you are waiting at the clinic's patient portal, you will miss the 15-minute window they offer you. If you have difficulty knowing where to look for the tele-health link they will not pick up their phone (it goes to voicemail) and occasionally confuse you by telling you they will use a non HIPPA compliant FaceTime call instead of the tele-health patient portal. Make no mistake: YOU will be billed for missing the appointment. In other words, It's always YOUR problem. In my experience, they will also bill YOU for appointments you might have missed for health reasons (I was in the hospital in the ICU). They may bill you for Sundays when the office isn't open. They will bill you for health teaching they offer (although they do not inform you of this). They will bill you for appointments even BEFORE you ever signed their office policies. To be constructive here, I think that the the problem lies with the office manager, Jodi's sister, who in my humble opinion doesn't have the temperament or experience for the job. She blames the patient rather than stepping back and learning what's wrong with their system so that it gets fixed; so patients CAN be in the right place at the right time. It's just so basic and obvious it's almost ridiculous, but they continue to put their health care delivery problems on you and will bill you for them. For me it was time to step aside. But to demonstrate my good intentions here's an example of how it should work: Allergist Alan Wang has an outstanding office manager named Vanesa. She always answers the phone. She also emails you to remind you of your appointment. What makes Dr Wang's office work so efficiently is that, after you click on the email confirmation, you are linked to Dr Wang's patient portal. After you confirm, the program links you to a pre-checkin page. Here you provide the doctor with any new medications you might be taking. This is an opportunity to check that your address and telephone number are correct and your insurance information is up-to-date. On the day of your appointment you will get another email, but this time it takes you directly to the tele-health page. Dr Wang's office manager then calls you to make sure your video and mic are set up and that you are ready for the call on time. You wait while watching a sign that says "The doctor will be with you shortly." You know that you are in the correct place and on time. None of this happens at the Kukui Clinic. If you sit on the patient portal page that confirms your appointment, there is no link to the video or mic. Dr Matsuo is often late, so it's unclear if you too should wait. There is no information telling you to go to another website address. If you call for help it rolls over to their message machine, then they bill YOU for missing the appointment. This in my humble opinion is not only irritating it's unethical and stupid. Patient's are there because they NEED to see the doctor why block them from doing so? I for one was waiting to be seen when all this occurred! Beware: If you try to text them You will be BURIED in clinic rules that repeat each time you text. As I said, they do not answer the phone, the office manager makes no effort to be helpful. In my experience she'll just try to find ways to charge you out of pocket thereby punishing you for your alleged wrong doing. IN MY OPINION, This is a sad situation for the professional team who mean well but appear to be unable to deal with a relative who is clearly not in a job that best suits her abilities. It even appears that she may be directed to punish patients who may be sick, elderly, disabled or in need of a hand. Why can't they just swallow hard and look at what's not working rather than blaming patients for what is really their problems delivering health care? ADVICE: I'd look for a clinic that has more concern for its patients. This is NOT being written by a disgruntled patient, but one who sincerely hopes that this clinic, with its good intentions but poor management, will succeed.

Many of the RNs are traveling and maybe only here for a few months. So I felt the care was very well-rounded since they bring their skills, experience and expertise from other hospitals around the country. I also felt the full-time long-term providers were excellent. The food is exceptional and plant based options are always available. My wait in the ER was never more than 35 minutes, except when coming in by ambulance. In those cases, no wait at all. The facilities are dated in some ways, but not so when it comes to equipment - X-ray, MRIs, etc , all in good condition. I had 2 MRIs there actually. Went well.

He was there 4 days getting IV hydration . Doctor response took a long time . We asked if someone was assisting him walk around the hall to keep his strength up . The staff said yes , he said no . Staff said he just did not remember . We have access to his chart . No notes about walking . We asked several times for someone to assist him to shower. 4 days no shower . His B/P improved and he was able to be discharged. 4 days in bed only assistance was to bathroom. No physical activity, no shower , nothing . Unfortunately they are the only show in town . If they paid our local nurses what they pay traveling nurses to fill in we might have a well staffed caring facility. His diet was not conducive to his difficulty with digestion. It seems there was no continuity of care . The oncologist could not take the time to come see him while he was there . That would be to convenient. He will have to come back up to same location next week for oncology consult . No patient advocate came in as we requested . The social worker came in and asked what he wanted to do without checking with the family or making sure there was care giving set up prior to discharge ! He lives alone . Just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer . We count on the "care givers" to coordinate and recommend the "next step" nothing . Luckily he has family to help . We have never been down this road . We needed information as well . As much as we asked we got nothing . We called hospice . We got the appointment for him next week . We got transportation arranged . We researched care needed . Diet conducive to his diagnosis. Lucky he has our mom and strong sisters !!! We really feel we are on our own . You are your own advocate. Unfortunately he does not know the questions to ask or really what he has or what to expect . He is not a druggy or street person . He is an adult that needs good medical care .

We sat from 1:45 to 2:30 without anyone speaking to us or explaining when the therapist will come out and get us etc. At 2:15, I stood at the front counter to inquire about the obvious delay. The receptionist glanced looked at me, and looked away, and continued talking story about non-business related activities; mostly centered around an employee's new baby in the office area. I sat down at 2:20, thinking the receptionist would speak to me after she was through with her personal business. She did not. We stayed for another 15 minutes, until 2:32 with still no one speaking to us about there time frame for the therapy, delays etc. We walked out and I looked into the office area to tell her, however she was still wasting time with personal discussions about non-business related matters. We contacted them on our way back to Waimea and explained that their total lack of communication, both pre, and during, the office appointment was unprofessional and that we would like descriptions of the arm exercises they recommended my wife do. We received no follow up until today mid-morning. The e-mail was very condescending and obviously self-serving; explaining that we should have expected to sit 3o minutes from the time they booked us, and known the appointment was for 90 minutes. They reported us as a no show, to our doctor, apparently to justify their billing. We will be contacting the state licensing agency and our insurance company to curtail fraudulent medical billing practices. Shocked and disappointed in their lack of professional response. The individual I spoke with was loud, harsh, spoke over me, interrupted me, and eventually belittled my role as a community provider and licensure (APRN rather than physician). All this, within the course of informing me that I'd need to cancel and/or reschedule more of my own patients in order to pick up the kit to make up for this completely unavoidable lack of aloha and timeliness. On our last full day on the island, my son was at the beach and got stuck by a sea urchin (wana). Several spines went into his heel through his beach shoes, and we played doctor by searching the Internet for symptoms and treatments. We got some vinegar at the store and soaked his foot, but couldn't remove the spines due to them being highly brittle. Things seemed ok, but later my son complained of pain while walking around Ali'i Drive, so we knew we had to resort to an expert just to make sure. A quick search led us to Aloha Kona Urgent Care which was close by and we're so glad we found this place! We just walked in without an appointment - fortunately we took the last spot of the day! We were welcomed by a nice receptionist, then seen by the friendly and funny Nico (sp?) from Germany who started a vinegar soak for him, and then finally Dr. Kim saw us. I so appreciated the patience they all provided, and the expert care and thorough explanations! I'm happy to say that things are much better now with my son's foot, as expected.
