What an amazing little eatery. The menu is limited but we found a handful of healthy, fresh items which was exactly what we wanted. We didn't leave anything on the plate. The lobster Benedict was very tasty and full of meat. Both yolks were runny. My husband really enjoyed the Salmon tartine. It had a ton of salmon on it with fresh onion and capers. I would describe this dining experience as overpriced food that fell far short of expectations. Nicolas Eatery doesn't have many options on the menu, which is usually a promising sign. A simple menu offers much opportunity to spotlight what you do well. I ordered broccolini and a Le Burger. The broccolini came with 5 slivers of thin, flimsy pieces. It was drenched in oil and had bits of raw garlic with chili flakes on top. The head of the broccolini was only slightly crunchy while the stems were oddly rubbery. Pretty disappointing considering that you can get triple the portion in a delicious serving for the same price at Mastro's down the street. The Le Burger was confusingly bad. At first look the burger bun was soggy - not a good sign. I took one bite that unknowingly would be my last. The burger was drenched in grease. I ordered a medium and this burger was 100% cooked well done. When I took apart the burger I found that every component was greasy - the lettuce was completely wilted and drenched. The tomatoes drenched in grease. The biggest surprise though was that the burger didn't come with pickles, but a small mound of cucumbers. It felt incredibly bizarre to see them on the burger and while I didn't eat them with the burger I struggle to imagine that they would have complemented the dish nicely. The burger did come with French fries which were over fried and far too salty. I couldn't eat more than 4 of them. Nicolas Eatery is so close to my home and it would have been lovely to add them to my rotating list of go-to restaurants. My husband and I were hanging out in Malibu at night and looking for a spot along PCH for a late dinner. He spotted this restaurant while driving past it while I was looking for spots on Yelp, so we decided to go give this one a try and the good reviews were on point! Even though according to their website they were closing soon, they were still happy to seat us 10 minutes before closing. The entire staff was super friendly and didn't rush us at all (my husband and I still tried to eat quickly since we were the last diners there). We ordered the Onion Soup, Trifecta, Lobster Roll, and a side of Broccolini. The onion soup was hearty and perfect at night when it got really chilly (there are heat lamps outdoors, and they put one right next to us). The Trifecta (my husband's order) turned out to be a burger (the menu doesn't clearly state that), and it was so delicious! Every component/layer complemented each other in flavor and texture. I always have to order a lobster roll when I see one on the menu, and this one tasted amazing! I prefer warm lobster rolls, which this one was, and it was so flavorful and buttery and filled with huge chunks of lobster meat. It also came with a huge side of hand-cut truffle fries, which I couldn't stop eating! The broccolini was the only item that we thought seemed a bit pricey, but as with all the other dishes, it was nicely made--very crisp and fragrant! I'm glad we ordered it, since I wanted something nutritious to complement the heavier dishes. Overall, the food and service were fantastic! My husband had the Cod with the mashed potatoes & cherry reduction. Superb. Seriously, a mouth stunner. The cherry reduction was to die for. I absolutely savored each bit of my bite. I had the Kale Caesar salad with shrimp. It had actual anchovies in it which is quite authentic. The salad was a great portion size, filling and dripping in dressing. I love that, especially with kale which can be more bitter and rough. This salad also featured a deviled egg. Best addition to a salad I've encountered. Tasty too. Enjoyed that tasty spin quite a lot! Other highlights, the onion soup. Always a crowd pleaser. And when going French, a charcuterie plate is a must. It is a beautiful restaurant right across from the ocean. We sat at a table on the rooftop patio and enjoyed the summer breeze. There is a bar upstairs so you will not be waiting long for service or drinks. The waiters were amazing, they don't designate tables upstairs, we were served by both of the waiters. We absolutely loved the service, knowledgeable on the drinks and dishes and gave wonderful recommendations. The food was overall delicious. We ordered the gem salad, the bread with whipped eggplant, the tuna nicoise, and the branzino. The salad was good but do not expect a salad with variety. It is a simple salad of Bibb lettuce with chopped scallions. The bread was crusty and soft inside which was perfect, but the whipped eggplant was not what I was expecting. The consistency was very watery and it was something I wouldn't order again. I do want to try the olive tapenade next time. Both main courses were wonderful. The branzino was light and flakey dressed with a beautifully subtle sauce to compliment the fish. The tuna was a deconstructed Niçoise salad without the lettuce and I appreciate the thoughtfulness that went into this dish. It had the perfect amount of olives and tomatoes tolling a perfectly cooked tuna steak. I will definitely dine here again and excited to try other dishes. The ambiance and service here is definitely five-stars, but the food for me fell short of the price point. I came here months ago for a celebratory dinner, but the steak and frites left me chewing on the meat and not really enjoying the meal. The french onion soup that I started with was delicious, but the steak was just so chewy (medium rare), that it was tough to enjoy the meal. For a chewy cut like that, I would have expected a little bit of citrus marinade to soften it up prior to being grilled/fried. All in all, if not for the disappointing steak, this definitely would have been more of a highlight. I enjoyed sitting at the bar and watching the chefs cook; I'd definitely be open to giving this place another try, but will probably avoid ordering the steak unless this just happened to be a one-off experience and I got unlucky. read more

We had been here pre-COVID and now back for the first time post, so happy to see that it is still here We really liked what we had both times, although the menu has changed, maybe that's seasonal. They moved the outdoor seating to outdoor rooftop seating which had a bar right there, which was very nice. I had the trout almondine, which was very nice. Light but tasty, I enjoyed the veggies with it. We all had some of the artichoke dip with baguette, I was the only one who was a fan of the artichoke dip. Not overpowering in flavor, but enjoyable. Kids had the tuna tartar which they loved, and they really loved the avocado. They ran out of chips or bread, so used the baguette for that. I was walking around the Beverly Center shopping with my family, when I stumbled upon this restaurant. I wad first attracted by the wonderful big windows and nice ambiance. Unfortunately that's what drew me in. Service was awful. It seemed like the blind leading the blind. My table was dirty when I sat down. No one really greeted us. Sure I get the prices given the space, however I expected better food. The food tasted old and was not well put together. Plates looked rushed and had no real flavor. I have no problem with prices like this, but when it tastes like this. It makes me think I should have just taken my family to a fast food place. In a space like this you need to improve. I doubt they will last very long given how pricy the area is and the lack of forethought in dishes, presentation and food. My little one threw up in the car ride home. He only had the chicken... The restaurant looks perhaps unassuming from the street-facing side, but tucked in the back is a beautiful open garden space, which is where we ate. The lunch menu is wonderful. We split the lobster roll and the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich. Both were excellent! I wouldn't hesitate to come back and try some of the other items. And I can't write a review without mentioning THE SERVICE!! Went to this place after driving through PCH to get some fresh air... My family and I ordered our own dishes, and mine was the Lobster Roll. Yes! Yes! Yes! It's very light, perfect bun, not too salty, not overwhelmed by the mayo/dressing. And the fries... I mean they're simple fries but it was just perfect. We were eating in the car since we cannot dine, but what if we were even eating inside? I bet it would've been lovely. The customer service is great, very approachable. Cute new spot opened in a mini mall (free parking!) in Malibu. Head Chef / owner worked at the famous French Laundry in Yountville so you know the food will be elevated. Beer and wine for now with a rooftop patio coming in January I was told. As for the food: 1. Chicken Wings -- wanted to like these but way too spicy (even though menu description didn't mention that). Chef was nice enough to offer to remake at no charge but we were in a rush so next time. 2. Moussaka - Eggplant dish with no meat -- VERY tasty -- recommend! 3. Lobster Roll - Nice, freshly made toasted bun with claw meat. (Comes with a champagne sauce and asparagus which I got on the side). In my opinion, the sauce was overpowering and did not compliment the lobster so I would recommend getting this on the side as you can always add it. Looking forward to trying the steak and chicken dishes in the future as the prices are reasonable for the area and the atmosphere is welcoming as the place is family owned/run. Everything was delicious here! The sardines appetizer with the tomato, lemon, sardines and buttered bread was a nice surprise. I also liked the shrimp and avocado, although admittedly the shrimp was a bit small in size. Yet everybody at the table who had it, had to send it back for more heat. It came out barely above room temperature. Again, kudos to fabulous wait staff, but my first visit was my LAST. I've driven by numerous times so today was the day! I was there a little before 12 noon (which is when they open), I'm glad the doors were open and they were ready for the early crowd. I had read about this family owned restaurant. They seem very pleasant and accommodating to everyone who enters, you will definitely be taken care of and acknowledged. As a Chef, Nicolas Fanucci, is renowned and it shows. I sat at the bar so I watched the Chefs do what they do. I don't know how they do it! The ability to juggle all they juggle is amazing to me. I'm glad they're here in Malibu. Overall, I enjoyed the light airy space. I enjoyed my Bib Salad with tasty fresh herbs and my glass of Sauvignon Blanc. The menu is varied and any eater will find something that calls to them. I saw lots of Lobster Rolls being delivered and they looked yummy! Unfortunately, they are using the typical Canola oil in their fryer and it is definitely Genetically Modified. I was hoping the Chef's "Frenchness" would also translate into no GMO products. Most Europeans want nothing to do with the GMO products. It is such a bummer because for this super healthy eater, I do allow myself the occasional order of french fries but ONLY if it is cooked in a non GMO oil. Otherwise, it is not going in my body. I get it. There is so much health information out there and not every fabulous Chef is going to know the best fryer oils. I will include a couple of quick videos to help anyone reading this but hopefully the people in charge of buying the oil will spend a little more to make sure it is a NON GMO product in order to care for our health. Most people eat anything and everything without question but the rest of us are catching on and we will continue to speak up so that our highest values (our HEALTH) are honored. Oh you'll feel that you ate the crappy oils for the rest of the day. Burp, burp, and more burps! That's just the immediate results. The long term results with bad oils are inflammation and weight gain and a myriad of events that happen physiologically trying to deal with the evil ingredients some think are okay to ingest. My greatest wish is that all restaurants would follow the lead of Erewhon Organic Markets and use a NON GMO Rice Bran Oil, peanut oil, or even the best of the best (which is what Venice Alehouse uses), Coconut Oil!!!
