We were blown away…read moreby how much fun he had at Dangerous Camp -- the floor of the gym was covered in nerf bullets and the kids were decked out in safety glasses, the leaders seemed intelligent and fun, nobody behaved like sore losers when they lost competitions, they made everything really enjoyable... great experience. The music camp was super small but they accomplished a lot and my son, the youngest in the group-- still had a really positive experience. I was actually surprised because it's hard to make a tiny music camp fun when you don't know what instruments you're getting and what skill levels-- but they did a fabulous job. We kept in touch with a few of the students and they were great. We went to the open house for the school this year and looooved the headmaster's speech. It seems like a private school that actually sticks by their beliefs and doesn't only cater to rich parents. I was left with the impression that they have great integrity, and the people there were respectful, polite, and fun.

Pros: -Classes are great and teachers want to help you. -After school stuff is well funded and well organized. -The sports events are fun to go to and the team plays well. -There's some elements of cameraderie (I'll focus on it later) -Food is fantastic. Cons: -Students can be right-leaning, some even bordering white nationalism (students have used pro-Confederate quotes on Instagram, and publicly have used racial slurs along with positive feelings toward bringing back slavery). -Homogenous school setting (almost everyone is a middle class, white, Republican prep kid that likes some sport. No one is really diverse or unique). -Lack of IEP/Special Ed programs. -The administration, while friendly, tends to favor the vox populi rather than the people getting bullied. You can see that my only problems with this school is the kids and the lack of IEP programs. Everything else about is good. If you want a good Catholic school for your child, I'd recommend it if they can keep to themselves politically. Otherwise, if they're Left of Centre all I can say is get the popcorn ready.

As for the overall environment, this school has always been extremely progressive in it's approach to the arts and it's dedication to pursuing them. The open mics used to be something of legendary quality for Chicago high school students, and that tradition has been carried on by the annual arts festival the school presents. Students must apply, have a great academic record, and score very well on an entrance exam in order to be accepted. All academic classes are taught at the honors or AP level, which provides the challenge needed by motivated students. My daughter is a freshman here, and so far I've been very impressed with the curriculum, faculty, and teaching methods. The schedule resembles that of a university: each academic class meets twice a week. Every Wednesday is dedicated to an alternative learning program called "Colloquium" which gives students an opportunity to sample a variety of subjects. The administration is well organized and supportive of the staff. In addition, there are very strong parent organizations that contribute to the life and health of the school community. If you know of an academically gifted grade school student, I would highly recommend that you consider NCP when evaluating high schools.

Students cannot focus during this long of periods, especially at a high school level. Social exclusion is also a big issue at this school. There are plenty of prestigious schools in the area; you are better off sending you student to another private school or one of those until the new principal gets his head screwed on correctly and fixes the new schedule.

Personally, I would cringe at the price tag if Einstein himself were teaching my child. They just built a new building this year and it is amazing. So much better than the old building they were in. Lots of room and the capability to have more students, classes and teachers. Some pros: The facility is wonderful, the teachers are great and really care about the kids. Reading and math are based on ability, not on grade. So, if your 5-6 year old is reading like a nine-year old, they will be put in with those readers. The school isn't even "grade" based. there is no "1st grade", etc. It is level based. They have a GREAT fine arts program. Extensive art, music and drama programs that you won't find in a public school. Some cons: There is a bit of an elitist attitude there at times but I think it comes more from parents than the staff. There is a bit of communication problem with the school and the parents. There just doesn't seem to be a cohesive way for parents to get the information they need. If you're considering sending your child here, definitely sign up for a visit and a shadow day. Personally, as long as we can afford it, my son will be going to this school.

One of the things about SAA that makes it unique is that the fact that you will do as well as the work you put in. As long as you take advantage of the local resources and have some self motivation to do well, it isn't hard to master the schoolwork and beyond. The teachers are willing to help if you are willing to ask, even when it comes down to academics beyond the classroom. For example, when I needed help for my High School application, or improving my SAT scores, my teachers were glad to lend me a hand. Also, I have to give props to the excelled math program that SAA offers. Where I initially did not enjoy math as a subject at all, SAA motivated me to improve my math ability. I eventually became part of the Math Team and found a passion for mathematics. SAA was a great choice for me, and I got a lot out of my experience.
