I had Ninja Bao bookmarked on Instagram for a while, and I was so excited to finally try it today. I ordered the gyoza sampler box, and it was just as delicious as I'd hoped. The service was great, and the restaurant itself was cute, quaint, and very clean. I was pleasantly surprised with a free scallion pancake--it was crispy and delicious. Good spot with friendly service and tasty food. I had the chicken katsu curry and it was lovely, and my friends and I also shared the bao and the chicken gyoza. For the bao, we got pork, veggie, and cheesesteak (which was a fun addition). I didn't try the veggie because it has mushrooms and I hate them with every fiber of my soul, but the other two were great. Love that they offer a free "dessert" which was kind of like a crab Rangoon tasting thing without the crab. It was a sweet cheese puff with veggies. I really liked it. It took serious effort to find this place, but it was worth it! My map led me to a building lobby where the security guard guided me to take the stairs down to the SEPTA tunnels. It's a very sweet surprise. The bao was fragrant and generous with the fillings. The baos were really good and the dipping sauce really amplified the flavor. Highly recommended. I'd been hearing great things about Ninja Bao for a couple months before I managed to get there myself for a quick business lunch: expect a few high-top tables (one big enough to seat 6 or so, the others are 2-tops). We accessed it by going down the Septa steps at 16th and Market (NE corner) and turning right at the bottom (it's about halfway down that corridor). Two of us shared a 6-pack bao box (you can mix-and-match your baos!) with two each of: chicken, curry beef, and roast pork baos. My favorite (not surprisingly) were the roast pork baos--there's something about hoisin and roast pork in a steaming bao bun that is so comforting! We also got an order of gyoza. The dipping sauce for both the baos and the gyoza were tasty--the bao sauce added a little spice to the mix. Next time I'll be sure to try the gwa buns and ramen, which I've heard good things about! Darn Covid made me lose all motivation performing regular things Anyway, we ordered various bao from Ninja Bao because my daughter came back from the Middle East after doing her study abroad for 6 months (2 of those months were because she got stuck there with airports being closed due to Covid). These bao were packaged well, and packed up nicely so when we opened the boxes at home all of them were intact! Flavour wise they were on a saltier side, but very tasty. You know how "hole in the wall" restaurants off the beaten path just tend to be better? After following a fellow Yelper's review to find the buried treasure I can say with confidence that this is that restaurant. To find this place you need to ignore the Google/Apple Maps and find the Septa station entrance called "15th St Trolly Station". This is on 15th St. across from Dilworth Park. Go down the escalator and go right, through the doors and continue straight to Ninja Bao which is on your right. There is a small seating area (which was busy - a good sign), a counter/kitchen with friendly employees and great smelling food. We ate the 6 piece "I don't know" box of bao buns which contains one of each of their varieties. Each one was perfectly steamed to soft fluffy goodness and the stuffings were all delicious. The sauces (garlic/onion soy, spicy mayo) were excellent. Even the dessert bao were good though a bit on the sweet side. We were in and out within 20 minutes full and happy. I went here with a friend, and it was an amazing experience. The place is clean and well lit. They had some music playing from the radio which gave it a really relaxed vibe. It is a hole in the wall type restaurant though so I wouldn't eat in with a large group, but if you're in town with just a friend definitely check the place out. The service was good. The bao box is perfect if you want to try a bit of everything, along with the dumpling sampler. My friend got the Ramen and said it was okay, nothing too special, but definitely come here for the bao. They come with different sauces that complement the flavors. It's definitely a lot of food, so I recommend trying the Philly Cheesesteak dumplings. I know I know, not traditional but they're so worth it. It is a quite a bit of food but for a great price. Every single dumpling is excellent. There is not a bad choice. Chicken, pork, veggie, or dessert. They are all amazing. Very very nice people serving the food, let's start off with that. I decided to get Curry Chicken Rice Bowl and my colleague got the scallion pancake and here's my thought on it. The curry flavor is really in your face kapow. Usually I'm not one to shy away from it but, it was too sweet for my liking. The chicken was great; the strips were crispy and tender-no complaints. I wished they would add some kind of veggies like carrots and potatoes for texture. The scallion pancake could have a liiiiiiiiittleeeeeee more scallions. I mean I know prices are going up but sheesh, a little more wont hurt! The sauce was great no, i like. Overall, I gave this place a 4 star simply because the service they give. Ninja Bao is my new favorite dumpling and bao restaurant by far. I've only gotten delivery, so I can't comment on the dine-in experience. But I tried the bao sampler, the dumpling sampler, and the beef scallion pancake, and they were all divine. The pancake wrap was incredible, with juicy flavors and a great dipping sauce. The beef and chicken dumplings were amazing (it also came with soup dumplings and veggie dumplings, which weren't amazing but also weren't bad). The bao were perhaps the least exciting part - I personally will prioritize the other menu items more next time - though if you're a huge bao fan, it's hard to go wrong with their meat baos. The matcha bao was also nice for dessert. The baos don't reheat as well, so they're not as good leftover - but the other menu items (dumplings and pancake wrap) are just fine as leftovers. The food was delicious. I had the jasmine rice with shrimp tempura. It was less than $10, which is not a small thing in this area in the city. That said, it included 2 pieces of tempura. I guess it's up to the person to decide if that's enough, but just know that the dish is mostly comprised of jasmine rice. The rice was nice and soft and not overly greasy. You could choose any number of soy sauces from a stand off to the side to go with. I am only removing one star for the seating area. Another customer and I agreed that the high-back chairs were just uncomfortable. I am pregnant, and sitting at a bar stool (the only other option) was just not for me. Unfortunately, the backed-chairs pinched me right at my hips and oddly were not straight-backed enough to support my back. Obviously this won't be a problem for those able to do the bar stools, but new, comfortable seating would present a nice option for dining-in for all shapes, sizes and circumstance. read more

My first time at Ninja Bao and I must say the dumplings are sooo good! I ordered the Gyoza Box with boba tea special for $16. I love all the dumplings. Be prepared to wait for them because they are cooked to order. There is a severe attention to detail I have not seen in many Asian restaurants. The dumplings are greasy, but they are greasy good. Except for the veggie one, I honestly could not tell which dumpling was which according to the description ("3 piece Crispy Chicken Pot-sticker, 2 Crispy Green Vegetable Gyoza, 2 Mini Pork Soup Bao, 3 piece Crispy Beef Pot-sticker"), but it doesn't matter. They were all good. Perhaps the only disappointment to an otherwise stellar street food snack meal is the boba. The bubbles were not soft and squishy, but rather firm and chewy. The drinks seemed all pre-made and refrigerated, so the bubbles were not fresh like at a place like Kung Fu Tea. Like real-life ninjas, Ninja Bao is hidden in plain sight, but it is a formidable foe for against hunger and expectations. FYI - Ninja Bao is underground in the Septa station, just a few stores adjacent to the Dunkin Donut. Must get: chicken katsu bwa bun, free gyoza Meh: roast pork bun, pork ramen Missed out: dessert bao As a native-born northern Chinese, I am very particular with baozi, or steamed buns stuffed with vegetables or meats. So you can imagine that my simultaneous hesitance and excitement when I heard about the new baozi shop. In short, it's fun, fairly well priced, salty and sweet. Unlike traditional baozi, ninja bao are steamed in similar manner, but also fried at the bottom to get that crispy bottom. While I was not too crazy about this cooking style, I was very surprised by how hot the bao remained, even after a long period of wait time while digging into other dishes. As for the actual inner content, the roast pork bun is very similar to the cha siu bao (or the sweet and savory, aka barbecue pork bun) that you can find at dim sums, however, given that I don't like bbq pork buns...it wasn't my favorite by default. The chicken and corn bao was actually quite a pleasant surprise as chicken is uncommonly utilized in Chinese steamed dishes (dumplings or baozi), but I found the overall combination of the ingredients to be a sweet and salty delight. The bwa bun, or one-sided bun, is beautifully packaged and definitely the star of the restaurant. Of the options, the best is definitely the chicken katsu, as the chicken is incredibly juicy but crunchy and worked best with rest of the fillings. That being said, I think these buns utilize too much sugar (visible layers of crystalized sugar on the bases) and thousand island dressing that definitely reminds you that you're eating something non-traditional. My biggest disappointment is the roast pork, which was way too fatty. In fact, for the pork bun and pork ramen, we had to throw it away because it was too fat to eat and enjoy. While the fatty pork made the broth of the ramen reach greater heights, I was highly disappointed when I had to throw away the generous chunks of meat away. Overall, this was a fun and unique establishment to visit, especially if you're traveling via Septa. The service is very friendly, almost too friendly, and you get a free gyoza on arrival, so it's definitely worth a visit.
