I've only ever been here for lunch, and as it's close to my work it's our go-to place for wining and dining visitors. The main room has amazing views of the coast (if the weather is on your side), and you really do feel like you're part of the countryside. The room itself is pretty comfortable, and the staff are nice and friendly. It has a certain formal feel to it, but nothing too serious that you feel like you have to make an effort and be on your best behaviour. This, coupled with the menu and the clientele (it always seems to favour the retired crowd) gives it all a fancy members club feel. When asked about the food I described it as "good quality old persons fancy food", which was meant a a compliment. It's traditional dishes done well, from good fish dishes like whole sole, good quality steak pies and chicken breasts in creamy sauces. Portions are generous, and if you're in a bigger table you get a couple of side plates with veg an chips (and they were good chips!) - all very traditional. And while it isn't doing anything wildly adventurous there isn't anything wrong with doing the classics and doing them well. Personally, I'd like them to throw something new into the menu to justify the 5th star, but if you like good quality food in a nice setting then it's worth a visit. There is a 2 course lunch menu at £12.50 which is well worth a try. And the view is fantastic.

It's not exactly all mod cons - there's no locks on the doors although seeing as its miles from anywhere, burglary is unlikely. There also isn't a shower, you'll have to use the bath for washing. They have a large electric blanket on the bed, as it was freezing in the middle of August I can only imagine what it's like in the winter! The owners are lovely if a little eccentric, and can tell you anything about the local area and anything you'd need to know about gardens and stately homes. They do a half decent fried breakfast and there is bread and cereals available. As a cheap last-minute booking its not bad, though I'm not sure we'd go again

After being set up for the day with a full Scottish breakfast Hugh gave us a guided tour around their Stobo Japanese Water Garden which for them is not just a garden but a passion. We would recommend this B and B to anyone who values friendly helpful hosts and good food over modernity with the added bonus of seeing around a stunning 4 acre garden.

On top of the normal pub fare there are some more exotic dishes like Mexican Fajitas, Burritos, Chimichangas and Chilli which don't seem very authentic but are tasty and make a nice change. Look out for the grilled breast of chicken with haggis and a pepper sauce: spicy and very tasty! The hotel is a little disappointing and seems to be in the middle of a slow refurbishment. The rooms are of varying quality with, tired furnishings, faulty windows and occasionally dodgy plumbing. On the plus side most of the rooms are a good size, and they have replaced the old TVs with modern LCD ones with Freeview. Overall recommended, especially for value and the helpful & friendly staff.

We were greeted with a cup of tea and a glass of beer on our arrival and even homemade shortbread. We had a beautiful room and a lounge for our personal use where I could help myself to a wee dram. Breakfast was served overlooking farmland behind the house with sheep and pheasants roaming before a great panorama of Ayr, Prestwick and the Ayshire countryside. They looked after us from arriving until leaving and it felt like staying over at a friends house. Thanks guys. The only difficult thing was leaving.

So glad we turned…read moredown the road to Mossyard's working farm - for fifteen quid a night (2 person tent, low season), we got access to a beautiful secluded (ish) beach and a pretty well maintained campsite. Downside: as the boy raced up to stop me filling up my water bottle - he poiunted out there was a permanently attached hose (bacteria housing) that lay in the waste disposal. Normally waste disposal and drinking water are kept separate, but here it isn't. No Dumfries belly for me! In addition, the shower block is at the farmhouse - allllll the way past the static caravans and non static ones (who benefit from toilets inside their holiday abodes). For unlucky campers like myself, it's a good trek up the hill, which isn't that appealing at 3am on a rainy windy night. Overall, I would use Mossyard again, although bring my own water more than theirs.

Rooms are the usual good standard that you expect from Travelodge; a very comfy king size bed and minimal room facilities. But clean, and with a good shower. Breakfast is limited either to a pre-ordered pack of cereal and juice, or you can go to the Starbucks next door. The options there are not much better but at least they have drinkable coffee. If you are prepared to walk 5 minutes and negotiate the busy roundabout, there is a Table Table restaurant next to the Premier Inn across the road that offers a more extensive (and expensive) pub grub-style menu. Other than that, you need to be prepared to drive into town for a decent meal. There's also a Shell garage with a wee shop that you have to drive through to get out so don't forget to fuel up!
