I found Dr. Cymbor to be informative and the staff was kind and patient, answering the dozens of questions that I had and showing consideration for the concerns that I had. The care was excellent until I came in for an appointment that had been scheduled for 5:00 PM. It was for a laser hole in my Iris to "relieve the pressure" from a growing cataract. It was as if I was on a rolling patient conveyor belt and there was no interest in answering questions or in scheduling concerns for the next procedure. I will have the other eye done, but will not go back for the cataract surgery at this practice. read more

I came in for what I scheduled as a routine eye exam and left with unexpected charges I did not agree to; I have worn contact lenses for over 15 years and specifically told the technician I did not want additional contact lens services, yet I was billed for unnecessary services that resulted in out-of-pocket costs, and at no point was it clearly explained these were separate, non-covered charges; the doctors and techs were professional and pleasant. I will note they were very pushy with upselling me on lasik and telling me to use their surgery center. They kept insisting to get the surgery despite me saying no several times. The front desk experience was the opposite, Abby was dismissive and rude while discussing the surprise charges, which made the situation worse; I also discovered their contact lens pricing is significantly higher than major retailers, with the same brand quoted near $90 that is widely available for around $60 elsewhere; I don't mind paying for services I agree to, but I do mind being billed for services I declined and not being clearly informed about extra costs, and better transparency and professionalism at the front desk would make a big difference. read more

I had a recent exam with Dr. Talone and was very pleased. I have nothing negative to say about any of the doctors at Nittany Eye Associates. HOWEVER, the side of the business that deals with purchasing glasses is another story. I had a recent appointment to get glasses for which I arrived on time. I was told to take a seat and waited for 30 minutes with no acknowledgment. I returned to the desk, confirmed that my appointment was for 9 am, and was once again told to take a seat. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that the actions of this business have conveyed to me that they do not value the time of their customers. There was no sense of urgency about getting me taken care of once I complained. As I said, this is not the first time that I have had this problem. I got a copy of my prescription and went to Happy Valley Optical for my new glasses. I walked in and was taken care of immediately. To reiterate, my complaints are not with the doctors at Nittany Eye Associates - only with the side of the business selling glasses. read more

The Doctors and the Eye Exam were fine BUT BEWARE when they take you over to look at glasses to buy. After spending 2 hours looking at glasses, being told the price and putting a down payment, I get an email from them a week later saying that the person helping me with glasses made a mistake and I owe an extra $450 for my glasses!! ARE YOU KIDDING!! No apology! They just wanted to know how I would like to pay for the extra $450! They should have given me the glasses for what I was quoted. It's not my fault if their hired help can't add correctly! I cancelled my order and my wife's eyeglass order too! We are on a fixed income and it took us two years to afford a new pair of glasses for the both of us and it went from $1400 to $1900 overnight!!! OUTRAGEOUS!!!! The actual care you get at this location is very, very good. I have nothing bad to say about Dr. Talone or any other doctor/technician I have come across. However, the overall customer service of the staff is some of the worst I've experienced. The struggle with check-in/check-out and the process of rescheduling appointments feels next to impossible at times. I tried to reschedule my appointment several times, only to find that the next available with my doctor were over 3 months away. I needed a new prescription and they just became too difficult to deal with. I will have to turn elsewhere in the future. read more

I'm honestly surprised by all of the five star reviews. I've been a patient here for the past five years, and I can say I'm looking forward to moving on to a different optometrist. The doctors are pompous and condescending. It's a big office and they always seem to be in a huge hurry to move on to the next patient. 80% of the time is spent with an assistant or an intern. Yes, the office appears nice, but the last time I was there the assistant complained the entire time about having to update information to "electronic medical records." It's 2014 - we all use computers. I tried emailing them for my prescription. It took one week and two emails before getting a response from them. The first two times I visited they tried adding charges to my exam, above what my insurance was covering, even though they never asked me whether or not I wanted what they were charging me for in the beginning. Their frame selection is a few years behind trend. They have a lot of designer frames, but they don't have the most current styles. Here in State College there may not be a lot of options, depending on insurance, but if you have a choice I recommend going elsewhere. read more

I think this office takes pride in cutting edge technologies. Every time I'm there there's a new examination machine that results in more precise readings. I'm elated they have a machine that photographs the inner workings of the eye w/o the need to have your pupils dilated. (My insurance doesn't cover it, but it's the best $35.00 I've ever spent at the eye doctor.) I've been seeing Dr. Talone for the past few years, and I'm always impressed with his thoroughness and attention to detail. His support staff as well - never a bad attitude, and just listening to them interact while waiting it's clear this is a well oiled machine. In the "eyeglass" selection area, I've worked with Mick the past few years as well. He's very good and very thorough. I'm going to absolutely agree with Robin W's comment on needing an appointment to pick up your glasses. It should take five minutes, here it's twenty. The doctors at Nittany Eye Associates do a good job and make me feel welcome, but I have repetitively gotten charged after the fact without any informing that insurance would not cover what I had anticipated would be. I just received a bill half a year later after my yearly exam and ordering contacts to find that insurance had changed when they would cover my contacts. I had paid copay the day of my exam- because they told me insurance would cover it, but am now expected to pay because no one informed me it had changed. Similar instances have happened before, so I hope to save someone a headache if possible. read more

Although the facilities, equipment, assistants, and Doctor were professional, when I called for an appointment they told me my insurance covered the exam. When I was finished with the exam and went to check out, the girl at the counter said I had to pay a $35 co-pay because my exam involved a "medical" determination. The doctor never told me that ahead of time. I am going to call my insurance company and complain about being charged a higher co-pay than agreed. Nittany Eye contacted my insurance company and they believe there was a mix up with what the co-pay should be. Nancy, the office manager, called me and verified she was sending me a refund for $35.00. So, Nittany Eye made good on the appropriate co-pay and I received a check within a few days. I see Dr. Trego on an annual basis, and he's awesome. He's courteous and kind and answers all of my questions. He's also patient; I've been trying to get fitted for contacts for quite some time, and he's willing to keep trying to find ones that work for me. I feel like he cares more for me as a patient than the money coming in from my visits. The office is really clean and welcoming, and the staff are super friendly and helpful. Dr. Talone is excellent - caring, knowledgeable, he truly listens and monitors your health carefully. Nittany Eye uses the newest technology, and it is not just for show. The doctors are pretty good, but the staff that processes insurance and your bill are almost purposely un-transparent or minimalist in giving information. The last time I was here, I went in for what was supposed to be a routine eye exam. But guess what, after the exam was complete, front desk staff tells me "wouldn't ya know, your insurance doesn't cover this. It's only every other year. But since the doctor already did the work, here's your bill. That'll be $10,000." I'm kidding it obviously wasn't 10 grand, but you get the picture. If only they had mentioned my insurance wouldn't cover certain "routine" things - that they recommended I do - of course I wouldn't have done them. But I'm sure the excuse is that it's up to me to read through the pages and pages of my policy to see exactly what the insurance will pay for. read more

My experience was not what I expected. I was told it would take 7-10 days for my new glasses. So a week and a half later I called on a Thursday afternoon. Told that there was too much prisim in the lens and I would not be able to see. I asked a simple question. Does the lens company they use have quality control? It made sense to me. Check them before they send them out. The young lady at Penns valley became defensive and even her tone of voice changed with her answer...the answer......people do make mistakes. Really. What bothered me, is, that she never called me to explain what had happened. Gave excuse after excuse. I sent them rushed, but now there is a holiday coming up, so I don't know when they will be here. My initial appointment was November 6th and here we are approaching December 7th and still no glasses, no communication. So I called them and gave them an ultimatum, either the glasses are here by the 8th or they can give me a copy of my eye exam, which I paid for and refund me the rest and I will gladly look for a new optometrist . I realize mistakes can happen. Without quality controls of some kind, it seems the patient pays the price. Own your mistakes and quit with the excuses. Something this employee needs to work on. read more

I have been a patient for many years and have always had excellent service from the Dr. and the staff. This is the first time though that I have ordered my glasses from them. I received a call approximately 2 weeks later that the glasses had been received and was informed that the next appointment that they had to pick them up was four days later. I can not say that I am overly thrilled to be called to make an appointment for something that should take 5 minutes or less. I understand that they are a very busy office and do an excellent job making their guests feel like family but this seems a little excessive. read more
