It's a pub with a good selection of tradtional faves and veggie alternatives. The fish n chips was good not great--fresh and cooked well. Fries--meh. The vegan fish n chips was better for what it was. The Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties was really good--in its inverted meat pie form. The Mac n Cheese was fine, though nothing to write home about. We got desserts, too. The Sticky Toffee Pudding was all of the above. A solid citizen in dessertland. The Cranachan was a bit too...oh, I don't know 'cuz I've never had it before. But not a winner. The Eton Mess was very well done and worth the calories. Tip...if you go past the bar and turn left there is more seating. read more

We were the first in for lunch right about noon on a Saturday. Service was friendly and helpful throughout our visit. I had the halloumi and orange salad, which was beautifully presented and delicious, while my husband had fish and chips, which came out wrapped in paper and were fantastic. No 1 should be eating dinner here. Maybe something to sip, but not to sup. We walked in for dinner after a walking tour and found a table in the bar section. One thing I've realized as a tourist in the UK is that supper is supposed to last quite a long time, or at least that's been the norm during my travels. One thing that I didn't factor in was the server forgetting that we actually ordered dinner. It wasn't just us as another table had the same issue near us, and when I walked to the loo there were plenty of long-faced people who appeared to be waiting for something, anything. Luckily, while my sister and I waited we engaged in delightful conversation with a couple from Switzerland who were also enjoying highland/lowland delights. When our food did appear it was less than average in taste and quality. The vegetables were those frozen steam cut variety, and my gravy was sweet, which seriously clashed with the mash and banger. We were looking for food and finally settled on this place as the other restaurants that we really wanted were booked (the festival is a pain). Int the end the menu n.v is really basic and the food (steak pies and a burger) was pretty bland. The service was decent and nice, but you can really do better. Put simple, this is what you want when diving in from the Royal Mile. A simple menu, great local beer selection, a noteworthy whiskey menu and a respectable range of price points. We had the fish and chips, and despite a poor review from another diner, it was worth coming back for. The texture, breading and quality of cook were right on. We also had the melted cheese and pastrami sandwich. The pastrami was great. Had a Gelnmorangie 10 alongside some local beers; All great. The pub across the street was packed so we jumped in here. Nice pub with a good selection of seasonal beers on tap. They even have Weston's cloudy cider on tap - bonus points from me. The fries were delicious - I love curly fries oh yes! The goat cheese and beetroot sandwich was pretty good. I didn't think they used the best quality of goat cheese but hey it is a pub, so all in all in impressed this was on the menu. The servings are pretty big so you'll definitely get your fill of food. Enjoyable place with friendly staff. read more

Formerly the Tass (standard old mans pub), the obviously named No.1 High Street, on the corner of the Royal Mile has had a full make-over! They have maintained the raw stone walls and old pub features, but added the 'in' floral wallpaper and new light fittings. It's brighter and feels more welcoming. The place was packed when we went there, we were lucky to get a seat! They have live folk music some evenings (we visited a Friday night) which is a nice addition to a regular pub. They are really into their ales and had a huge amount of whiskies on display, over 40! The is a quiz too, on Monday nights. I've not tried the food, but it appears to be traditional pub grub. read more

Right across the World's End is a bar that is specialising in Real Ales, but also serving great whiskies and draft ciders (which are warm BTW, as Anita A. wondered where the bubbles and ice were..) . I tried a Caledonian Deuchards (3.8%ABV) and a Darker Ale 1703. Both very enjoyable. Anita A. had the Scrumpy Original Draft The bar comes over as 'local brown' but bright and airy. Benches under the huge windows and big drinking tables. There were a few locals when I visited, but this being the Royal Mile there is no escape from tourists. Their food menu is authentic and mostly Scottish. They even proudly claim that every haggis served is locally caught this morning. I like that. :o) On my visit there was a group of 30 French school trip children being treated to a sit down meal in the back area, consisting of Hot Dogs, chips and soda-pops. Yummy! There is one flat screen TV (about 30") above the entrance and it was showing Wimbledon - but the sound was muted and chart music was softly playing in the background - that way you could enjoy the use of most of your senses and still hold a conversation.. The central bar area is inviting and the banter with the bar staff was good. They are very knowledgeable on the drink they serve and even give you a taster of what you might fancy drinking next! The bar is clean, uncluttered (unlike other 'brown' pubs I visited in the same area. Their toilets are well maintained, clean again uncluttered - bar a few posters advertising a pub quiz. Funny thing about this pub quiz is that they call it the No Mobiles or Google Pub Quiz. Wifi connection is free and fast. I enjoyed it here and when on the Royal mile I will certainly consider visiting again. read more

Stumbled in here for "one for the road" the other day. I was pleasantly surprised, given it's location on the Mile. It's clean & bright & airy. The bar staff are friendly. They have a good selection of beers and nice choices on draft. Haven't tried the food but saw some dishes being brought out and they looked like decent pub grub. read more

Well its now 14.40. Now this bar is similar to the Mitre, except I am the only one in the place.3 bar staff on. Who they expecting? The Scotland rugby team? There's not much I can say about the place. Nice clean bar, a wee bit cheaper than the Mitre. I wouldn't come back here. Its definately changed over the years. I feel intimidated with more staff than customers. Ah well.. will finish my drink and find somewhere else. Hey ho.. Time to go! read more

Children were exhausted from climbing Arthur's seat. I spoke to her twice and she kept saying "it's not my fault." She was arrogant and I think with all the pubs in the area, you could do better! A big ol' pile of meh. The bar looks fantastic, with the back dining area emulating a cross between a library and cigar club where men played pool and matters of state were discussed over fine whiskey. They also have some fine ales on draught. But the food? Abysmal. You can close your eyes and walk smack into a decent pub in Edinburgh if you only want a pint. But quality eats are a different beast. No. 1 has a few sorry faux-American items (like hot dogs and curly fries) and more traditional pub fare like fish n' chips and a roast on Sundays, but nothing I or my party ordered left much of a positive impression. read more

I squirreled $5000 away and took a trip to Scotland in '02 (it was on my bucket list). I spent 2 days in Edinburgh and luckily found "The Tass". If I didn't learn anything else, it was the origin of the American gesture of the "bird". I enjoy talking to, and learning from, locals. If you don't know, it orginates from the older constant warfare with France. One of the French's most feared weapon was the longbow. If and when an adversary was captured, the two bow drawing fingers on the right hand were cut off. This prompted the developed of the two finger salute-signifying "#*&% you, I've still got mine". The Americans, always ready to modify everything, shortened the salute to one finger--the middle one of the right hand-siggnifying "#*&% you". I will always be grateful to "The Tass" for affording me the opportunity to broaden my education. P.S. The food's pretty good too. The first time I ate all my haggis. read more

Since we were staying near this pub we gave it a try on the first go I ordered the local fab Cullen skink soup which is potato and leek with smoked haddock. I was told they were sold out for the day and offered tomato. I added chicken skewers and my son had a hamburger (plain). The soup was and chicken skewers were both pretty good - the chicken was fried with a tortilla crust. I asked for hot sauce for the soup but they were out of it also. The negative was 5 minutes after I ordered a couple sat by us and ordered the skink soup. Lo and behold, it came out shortly after our food. I asked the server (not ours as we never saw her after she took our order), and she said she had not heard it was out. Ok. Then apparently our waitress left as no one ever came back to check on us -which was ok but we needed to go. I finally approached the bar and the short haired auburn woman said "yea she probably left" and handed us a bill. K again Based on reviews and proximity I decided to give it another try. The same auburn (French? Herman?) woman was running the bar. She lost the Miss Warm and Friendly title apparently as she was abruptly with everyone around me. My waitress was sweet - got me the skink soup along with a sandwich to go. Had to eat the soup there as they didn't have to go for it It was. I've. I didn't like the smoked haddock, but that was just my personal taste. I'm sure most people would have loved it. I ordered a madras - she asked what it was and I said vodka with a splash of cranberry and oj. "OK" she chirped. She brought my goat cheese/beetroot/spinach sandwich(which we discussed and she said was great) to go and the bill. Surprise! I had apparently bought a bottle of ok and one of cranberry at 2 pounds each for my drink, along with 3 pounds for the shot of vodka. I so would not have ordered if that had been explained as we are leaving town and it will be tossed out. Guess I should have looked at my receipt better but I guess the mixers on it threw me off. That goat cheese sandwich? Yea, when I unwrapped it was pastrami and chees - looked at the receipt and there it was. We had specifically talked about the goat cheese sandwich twice. So one more thing goes into the rubbish tonight (and even if I ate pastrami it was weak - 2 thin slices of pastrami and a little melted cheese - maybe mozzarella - on it and that was it. No condiments. lettuce, nothing. So 2 strikes, and they're out. I'll go across the street next time we visit as the food was just ok and the service was not good. I don't blame the waitresses (except the one that took our order and left -without passing our table on), they were sweet and friendly. But something is not working here. Entered here for lunch and tables were mostly full, but had already been served. The server and bartender completely ignored us for at least a full minute while we waited trying to get their attention, so we hopped across the street to the World's End and received the quickest and warmest welcome I've yet seen in Edinburgh from both the host and the server. read more

By far the worst service I have EVER received it's a shame I can't give negative number of stars!!! My friend and I stood in the door waiting for someone to acknowledge us for several minutes. We had to ask one of the two bartenders who were talking (smallest bar area... don't know why there were two) if it was seat yourself or wait. We waited five minutes before the waitress asked us what we wanted to order... but we had never received menus. Food was mediocre at best. Had to wait fifteen minutes to get our bill. Had to go to the bar to cash out because waitress never came back to table she was socializing at the bar. Terrible terrible. Plenty of great places to eat, we recommend Worlds End across the street!!! Great food and service!!! read more
