Having a Women's gym eliminates the stress of everyone trying to impress each other and allows for a supportive, feminine environment which can cater directly to the female mentality and physique. Fernwood St Agnes is a little gym, but with a lot of knowledge and a good balance of varied activities. They have two rows of treadmills with individual Foxtel TV's as well as a giant TV (set to a music channel) at the head of the room. There are two cross trainers, two steppers and many different types of stationary bikes and there are a few rower machines. The small room next door is dedicated to personal training and the equipment looks quite scary until you know how it's used. They provide yoga, Pilates and the Les Mills training programs. Their weights room have free weights, machine weights, steps and bikes for spin classes. Fernwood provides a weight loss service, personal training a creche, breakfast supplies and nice change rooms with a massage chair. This place is small but quite well formed - I just don't enjoy - and never have enjoyed the business sales pitch at the beginning. Be very wary - Fernwood can be quite expensive. If you're motivated enough (and they genuinely want you to be), Fernwood has the ability to change your lifestyle.

My partner says the change, in me, since starting with Tyla is nothing short of a miracle! I look forward to coming to the Train Station each morning. The workouts have made me feel more energetic, more co-ordinated, more able to focus and concentrate. Working with Tyla given me far more stamina and strength to deal with the stress of life! Tyla makes it great fun and the session flies by in no time. I am someone who used to detest exercise up until a few months ago when I started working with Tyla. In that time I have been away on two trips and Tyla supported me to keep exercising and eating well in that time by keeping in touch daily which was fantastic. Before meeting Tyla I had gained a lot weight that I am now losing and have dropped down two sizes in clothes, which is great for my self-esteem. I have learned new ways to eat well, which sustain me and are enjoyable. Tyla has outstanding knowledge of nutrition, diet and fitness and is happy to answer any questions I have both during the session or later that day by text. Tyla even went beyond the call of duty and sourced a Power Boxing Station Stand Gym Speed Ball Punching Bag for me, at a bargain price! Tyla is passionate about what she does and her enthusiasm is infectious. I highly recommend Tyla to anyone at any level of fitness.

The 25 metre lap pools are a good depth and wide enough lanes. The diving pool is fantastic for water running and for a more casual swim. The change rooms are clean and well-looked after. The members only change room is smaller and more private, and each cubicle has a soap dispenser, which is handy if you forget things as much as I do. The spas and saunas are great. There are two large spas, which I would go in more often if they weren't mostly filled with overweight old men or kissing couples. Nothing can keep me out of the sauna though. They have a dry and a wet sauna. I frequent the dry sauna, as it is just the right temperature that you can stay in it for a reasonable time. You're sweating like crazy, but it only becomes uncomfortable after about 10 minutes for me, which is longer than I can normally bear it. This is a well planned and set out facility, with plenty of showers and drinking fountains. I only wish I was a lot younger and could play in the kid's pools, because they look fantastic.

Entry prices are reasonable: adults and kids $7.50ea, kids under 3 years of age are FREE, concession $6.00 and there is a family pass of $21 (see conditions). A multi pass can also be purchased if you wish to be a regular. There are three types of swimming pools being main, diving and leisure pools, spa, sauna, gym, steam room and other sessions. Inside is a cafe and swim shop for all your daily needs and especially is you've forgotten something from home ie towels, etc. Every school holidays there are programs for kids to join, a creche for the kids whilst mums and dads get their fix of fitness and birthday parties are also catered for. Check out their website for more information and opening / closing times. If you don't want to get fried at the beach or have sand kicked in your face by passing dogs, go to the pool!
I've been going to Your World Fitness since it opened its doors last year…read more It gets an A+++ for appearance. It has to be one of the most glamorous places in SA to go to the gym, complete with chandeliers and works of art adorning the walls. The place is massive and the facilities are state of the art - you never need to fight for a space to exercise. The class times are a bit awkward and don't really suit city workers, who I'd assume would be their biggest clients - so I'd recommend checking that out before you join. I'm hopeful that as they grow they will have more classes (especially yoga!) available. The biggest downfall is parking - unfortunately they have no designated parking and the car park across the road closes at 7pm which doesn't help those of us wanting to train after work. Street parking is the way to go but often difficult - unless you are doing a 6am class. Overall, a great gym and can't wait to see how it improves as time goes by!

I have started with a Personal Trainer recently and it has been one of the best things that I have done. We have been incorporating a few crossfit exercises into my training and he has been able to make the training specific to my strenghth building needs that compliments my other activities. The gym boasts lots of great activities such as pilates, gravity yoga and pole conditioning. There is even a cafe on the ground floor with a wide selection of goodies for gym junkies. And if you have children, there are childcare facilities too. I haven't had a problem with carparking before or after hours either.

I looked around the gym and I really liked what I saw. There was a lot of equipment, a special room for women, a large group class room, and the music was pumping, so you won't stress out if you forget the iPod! Another thing I liked about Viva was that it was un-contracted. You pay a joining fee and then it's just $20 a week for as long as you want, and then when you feel like you've done enough there, or you have to leave, there's no fee to leave. So, if you're looking for a gym that isn't a huge franchise but still has all the right equipment? Then Fiva is the place to go.

It's easy to get intimidated by the bulky hulks in the free weights area, especially when you are a woman. I make a v-line over there but get stared down as they chew on barbells growling at me. Errrr it's okay I wanted to use the weights machines anyway. You have all kinds here. People dedicated to losing weight, building muscle or just to look good.
