What a cool little store. The owners were beyond nice and very knowledgeable. They have vinyl, tapes, cds, and some very cool other items. We were in a bit of a rush so I grabbed the KISS record I needed and we left, but we're going back very soon to buy some bowls, coasters, and browse through the postcards they make. I am from Seattle and in Albuquerque for the Thanksgiving holiday and wanting to check out some local record stores, went to 3 and Nob Hill was my last stop and by far the best. While quite small, they had a great selection of vinyl and a loaded (New Arrivals) and very reasonably priced. I'm always in search of Zappa and the very helpful and engaging associate was eager to go to the back room to pull out his Zappa stack that just came in. Don't miss out on this gem of a Record store. I passed through this place and decided to rifle through their CD reserves in search of anything to bust asunder the monotony of what I'd been listening to for the past three weeks on the road. Normally, I go in for the records, but since my car has been subjected to temperature extremes and I prefer my vinyl to be circular and groovy rather than wobbly, globular, and unplayable, I just briefly looked through and saw some good LPs. There weren't all that many CDs, which is totally fine and understandable, but what was lacking in quantity was made up for by diversity and quality. First of all, the discs were in nearly immaculate condition for having been previously owned. Second, they're fantastically cheap. Most are $3.99, but a few of my choices were $5.99. Only one of my choices was $24.99 because it was relatively rare and contained multiple discs, but again, it was worth it to me. Additionally, I found some great discs of more underground stuff that I normally can't even find if I'm searching for them. I don't know if it was just from one sonic soulmate who had fallen on hard times or merely digitized his CD collection, but I got the goods. In any case, I got the impression that whoever was taking in the used stock had an ear for quality and an eye for appropriately priced used material. I also noticed a nice level of discernment when it came to filtering out the garbage that must flow through any used music dealer. I mean that to say it was clear they weren't just taking in anyone's undesirables. There weren't like thirty copies of Mambo No. 5 collecting dust on the shelves or anything. The guy who checked me out was nice and knowledgable, a young guy who appeared to be not-entirely-impossibly the grandnephew of Jim Morrison. It seemed the owner was there as well, and possibly some other employees, as they were overseeing some reorganization or renovations. They all seemed pleasant and friendly, despite my lack of direct communication with them. (Nothing irks me more than overhearing, or actually being subjected to, a pissing contest between music nerds. I got *none* of that vibe whatsoever from any of those guys. That's almost a rarity in record stores, it seems. I like when people just let a dude do his thing and only engage at appropriate levels. Not like I expect a mindreader, but I appreciate it when people are able to suss it out naturally.) They also had some great cassettes for sale, most for only one or two dollars. Not many people tend to care about those now, which is fine by me because that means the more and better all for me. I plan to go back whenever I'm in Albuquerque next. read more

Stopped into Nob Hill Music when I was in town visiting my sister. This is a top notch used vinyl store. The proprietor knows his stuff and is quite willing to share his knowledge without being pretentious. He had an eclectic mix of music - primarily jazz and rock I would say. Not much in terms of music from the last decade or so but plenty of classics. While by no means a metal shop, I was surprised by the Ozzy Ozbourne collection they had on hand. I bought five records, all original presses from the 60s and 70s. I just finished playing them all and I have to say they quality was excellent and consistent. I get the impression they do not sell records that are damaged in any way. Excellent quality standards. Prices are not cheap but also not gouging - they are very fair considering the quality. Best place for vinyl in Albuquerque. The only Albuquerque store that actively buys vinyl and puts new stuff out every week. Other options in Albuquerque are only worth checking once or twice a year and are home to the worst sales people I have come across anywhere. If you've shopped Albuquerque for vinyl, you know about the bad attitudes and odd prices. One place that I won't name, the guy actually waits til you walk up with a record to price it, taking his time to check the highest value that the record may or may not have sold for on ebay. Nob Hill Music is now the only shop I care about for vinyl and I have been buying vinyl in this city for at least 13 years. All the records are in nice condition and priced to sell. The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful without being annoying. read more

Nob Hill has the highest standards for vinyl quality that I've ever seen. I dig through their new arrivals, I think, "Whoever owned these must have handled them with white gloves." That means you can feel confident that what you're getting is the best or they wouldn't even bother. The staff (Steve, Aaron, and David) are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, with none of the snobbery that comes with many record stores. They are enthusiastic music appreciators who like to share what they know, but they won't bug you if you're not in the mood to talk. I sometimes wish they had a couch and a coffee bar, but then they'd never get rid of me. I'd be there all day--and probably have to get more record shelving in a hurry. read more

Sometimes I like to rummage through the junk shops looking for the perfect records, which is rare to find but I guess it's all about the search, and then leave those shops and frantically search for hand sanitizer or goop off to wash that grime off . And sometimes I like to walk into a clean, organized shop and not worry about all that and know that I am going to be looking at someones curated collection of records - this is one of those places. The shop is well-organized and has records, cds, and a good collection of cassette tapes. It is a bit more expensive than the junk shops, but it is worth it if you want to know you are getting some quality content and a record that isn't scratched and warped. The guy at the counter has always been pleasant and I have found some excellent records and tapes here. I'm happy there is a store like this in Nob Hill. read more

I would have liked to give this place a positive review because it's a fine little shop with a decent selection and fair prices. However, I cannot recommend shopping here and would actively discourage anyone from supporting this place, ever. My wife found a copy of a particular title in the new arrivals bin, and was very excited because not only is it a great record, but it's also one we've wanted for a long time. Perhaps sensing our excitement, the owner came out of the back room and LITERALLY took the LP right out of her hands! He claimed that he promised it to another customer, which struck me as unbelievable, but even if that was the case (which I doubt), how would that customer have known it was in the new arrivals? Did you promise that record to Putin?? Once a record is out in the bins, the code of conduct is that you have to sell it, end of story. Not to do so is straight up troll behavior, and horrible form. I worked at Academy Records in Brooklyn for many years, and lord knows there have been several records that hit the bins that someone else probably wanted. Mike Davis, the owner of the shop has many stories of having to sell through clenched teeth severely underpriced records that went out because someone on the staff had messed up. At the end of the day, is it worth alienating and upsetting potential customers over your mistake? If you underprice an item, that's your fault, not the customer's. Sell the record and move on. And if you really promised the record to someone else (or covet it for yourself), do your customers a favor and pull it from the bins immediately. If you forget to do that, again, your fault-- don't ruin another person's shopping experience over it. Unbelievable... read more

It's a good enough record store with some good finds. But if you're looking anything newer than 1990, you'll be disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I love vintage records. But I also like buying brand new records from favorite bands, and I would rather not pay the incredibly expensive prices at Barnes and Noble. Decent record store that everyone should check out, but I really wish they had newer stuff as well. read more

This guy has no respect for young women: The owner of this shop was very patronizing to me. He was complaining that he was losing business to the construction, even as I stood before him to cash out on $100 worth of records. He started lecturing me about the construction project, stating that bringing Central down to one lane was going to decrease business. When I responded that the point of one lane on Central is to slow traffic down to increase business, he stated that he had videotaped a traffic jam before when Central was down to one lane. He didn't seem to account for the fact that buses and cars were in the slow one lane he observed, rather than separated as in the A.R.T project. When I respectfully disagreed with him--rather than stating he is flat out wrong--he puts his computer in front of me to show me a list of city council people opposed to the project, as if their opposition trumps my support. I stated there are many people on both sides of the issue, it is a controversial project. Then he started speaking to me about how this is the Wild West and we don't conserve our culture. He was speaking to me like I was a child. Since I was dressed down in sweats and a beanie, it probably didn't occur to him that I have a Ph.D. and I co-taught a class on the A.R.T. project on the debate around the project. Maybe because I am a young woman he thought I couldn't possibly know what I'm talking about. I was insulted, and after his condescension didn't feel like giving him my money. Too bad for him. I spend hundreds of dollars on records each month, and I will not be coming back, or recommending his shop to my friends. This guy needs to know, there is more than one way to lose business. Rather than blaming construction and talking politics with customers in an arrogant way, stick to records. Since I walked out and didn't give him my money, I went over to "We Buy Music" on Lomas and Pennslyvania (or Washington, can't remember) and found many of the same records Nob Hill was selling in good condition at a fraction of the price. Like 2.00 compared to 12.00 Head over to "We Buy Music" instead--I wasn't lectured or condescended to, and I bought music in peace without a shop owner feeling sorry for himself, asking for my pity, and talking to me like I was born yesterday. On the positive side, this store has a pretty wide selection for its size and I did find some LPs I would consider buying. I did not buy anything, though, because his prices were outrageous! A Tobin Sprout solo record was $24! The Who's Odds & Sods for $12- great artists, great records but this guy should become aware of e-bay. I want to support local storefronts, sure, but rape?
