I'm always in search of Zappa and the very helpful and engaging associate was eager to go to the back room to pull out his Zappa stack that just came in.

They even have a frequent buyer card! 10 stamps gets you a $10 credit! Records come with a semi-guarantee to play. I really can't take advantage of that since I'm from out of town. They're just moving in, so I couldn't see exactly what all they sell. So for my next trip, I'll make a stop. The location has changed, they're on Central now.

How To Buy Records At "We Buy Music"…read more ~ Overview The venue has a large selection of LPs, mostly in uncategorized boxes marked "New Arrivals". The owner is nice enough, but I don't chat. Other reviewers say he knows things, or use other descriptions. My preference is rare jazz instrumentals or rare Americana on a defunct record label that is not on the internet. I need to research thoroughly before I buy. After several visits I finally bought some rare albums. I was very curious about pricing. ~How To Deal With No Price Tags "New Arrivals" are not tagged. It's a tough way to shop. To the store's credit, prices fluctuate and these LPs might stay on the shelves for several years, and it's a one-man operation. Connect to Discogs.com, find your record, and look at the "Median" price, or seller "total" price that includes shipping. Now you're armed with pricing knowledge. ~ Procurement Procedure You Should Know Take the LPs to the desk, then browse some more because it takes several minutes per album to price it. The owner checks the disc, adds sleeves if missing, then goes online (perhaps Discogs or some other database) for pricing info, then places a red price tag on the cover. His rates hover around the median on Discogs, but We Buy Music is not cheap per se. However, you already did your research and you know what is a good price or not. Some LPs are already tagged and returned to the bins unsold. Some of these returns are overpriced. ~ Make The Acquisition You'll get a store stamp card that accrues $10 credit for every $100 spent. You'll spend a lot on rarities. You might not get a receipt. ~ Open Seven Days Morning To Dusk The store is open often with hardly any customers. It's an apparent warehouse as storefront. With the owner's knowledge and large collection, he probably sells online through several portals although the business card has no web address. ~ We Buy Music Has The Largest Selection, But No Prices Or Sales The vendor is tops for selection, but no true bargains. Sometimes Nob Hill Music, Mecca, and Antiques and Things have sales, and albums are tagged. If you're lucky, you might find a rare LP at a flea market or thrift store, but don't count on it. ~ I'm Not A Vinyl Collector Or Audiophile My priority is the music, not the medium. I buy rare LPs, digitize them to wav on good gear, then resell them. If it's on Spotify/Tunepat, I'll download it there and add it to my collection. I'm not an audiophile, I don't sit in front of fabulous speakers and listen to every nuance. MP3 is fine: at home, on the bus, low riding, etc.

Unfortunately, though, most things are out of my budget. This is not surprising given the curation and high average quality of item per stall, but it leaves me miffed when something is marked up so high past my understanding of its worth. Still, one day I will be coming back for that taxidermy antelope that has been staring my down for years now.

We should've used our phone flashlight and gone over the item much more closely. The owner said that if it was teak, it would have been labeled "solid teak." I think it should have been described as "teak veneer." I wonder if the credit card charge can be disputed, as that is my only recourse. I've been trying to do more bookstore lurking since I moveed here but there aren't that many good stores here. I love the Friends of the Library way up in Rio Rancho but that's a long drive. But I had a doctor appointment which happened to be a block from here so I checked it out. The first thing is that you know this is a book lovers book store with staff favorites right in the front. The main thing is how many stacks and categories they have. If you're looking for books about NM and the South West they have multiple shelves. But they also have tons of speciality shelves like Pulp Fiction and Romantasy. It's a great place to spend hours lurtking the stacks. I've been twice since I discovered it.

They offer a pittance. It is really insulting, actually. A couple of years ago, I brought a couple of boxes of books to them (the kinds of books you routinely see on their shelves, so nothing strange) and accepted their offer out of what I later came to see as a misplaced sense of politeness: their offer had left me so stunned that I just went along with the whole thing and accepted it. Almost immediately I felt ripped off, taken advantage of. Later, I had to go through and clear out a dead relative's library. It took a long time to sort through, but at the end of the day I had around 40 boxes of books. I'd taken out the valuable things to sell online, I admit, as you should never sell the really valuable things to a used bookstore when it's easy enough to do so online. These were things like signed first editions and presentation copies and other rare books. There were a few boxes of those. There were also about 15 boxes of books that would have gone down well at Page 1, given what I know of what they have on their shelves. And the rest were rather more obscure. But I remembered how I had felt a couple of years ago when I had sold books to Page 1, and I decided simply to give all of the dead relative's books, minus the particularly valuable ones, to the public library. They always benefit from selling them, and I felt I'd done something good toward protecting one of the few remaining institutions that is still a purely public good. So, while technically I didn't get any money, I ended up feeling better, cleaner. Thank God for our public libraries! You should of course do what you want, but, when you take a box of books into Page 1 and inevitably feel horrified and sullied by the humiliating price they offer you--perhaps thinking you'd get more out of the books by burning them in your fireplace in winter to save on heating costs--, remember that you can just say "no" and instead donate them to the library and help make the world a better place for everyone.
