******STOP AND READ THIS IMPORTANT MESSAGE*****…read more I went into this shop thinking I'd get a decent haircut. The Google reviews seemed okay overall, although there was one recurring piece of advice: "Stay away from Juan." Remember that for later. The first thing that hit me when I walked in wasn't the atmosphere--it was the smell. The entire place smelled like a full baby's diaper. I figured maybe it would go away after a few minutes. It didn't. I sat down and waited about five minutes before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Eventually, the barber in the back-right corner finished with his customer and asked if I had an appointment. I told him no, that I had just moved to the area and it was my first time there. I sat down and showed him a picture of exactly what I wanted: a high fade, no drop in the back, and just a little taken off the top with clippers. Pretty straightforward. While I'm explaining this, a mom walks in with her son. Juan claims the kid as his next customer. The mom explains exactly what she wants, Juan nods confidently, and starts cutting. We'll circle back to that. My haircut starts normally until I notice the fade is way too low. I ask if he can bring it higher. He lets out a dramatic sigh like I just asked him to solve world hunger and keeps going. A couple minutes later he asks how much I want off the top. I tell him, "Just a little. Maybe the tips." This man immediately attacks my hair with a #4 guard. For reference, the top of my hair is usually around a 7.5. I walked into the shop looking like a Mexican and walked out looking like a Puerto Rican. I tell him it's way shorter than I wanted. That's when he completely loses it. He starts going off about how "you military guys come in expecting too much" and complaining about unrealistic expectations. I calmly remind him that I literally showed him a picture before we started. That somehow made him even angrier. He starts explaining how the haircut in the picture was unrealistic because "they use paint" and all kinds of enhancements. Now here's the funniest part: The picture I showed him was from a review posted on HIS OWN BARBERSHOP PAGE. The exact haircut he was telling me was unrealistic was a haircut someone got at his own shop. The next five minutes were painfully silent. Then Juan finishes the kid's haircut. As the mom is leaving, I hear her say: "Yeah, next time I'll show you a picture of what I actually want." At that moment, everything suddenly made sense. Apparently, listening to customers is optional here. To summarize: * The shop smells bad. * The barbers don't listen. * They cut what THEY want, not what YOU want. * I was quoted one price while the guy before me paid less. * $40 for this experience is absolutely wild. The best part? I looked so rough afterward that I immediately went to Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen to get my haircut fixed. They fixed it, charged less, the shop was clean, organized, and didn't smell like a biological hazard. You can tell the difference immediately. Their stations are organized, their tools are maintained, and most importantly--they actually listen. So in the end, I paid about $70 total for two haircuts in one day. One to ruin it. One to save it. If you're military and new to the area, do yourself a favor and skip this place. Unless you're looking for an argument, a mystery price increase, and a surprise haircut you never asked for. You are better going to the PX instead of coming here.
