A collection of public artworks along the recently refurbished (2004) New South Promenade with stunning views of across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man, Southport and even Cumbria on a clear day. I won't list all the artworks here, I'll let you discover them for yourself, but to whet your appetite I'll mention 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?' the world's largest mirrorball designed by Michael Trainor, which is the sparkling canvas for a funky light show during the Illuminations, the 'High Tide Organ' which uses the power of the waves to create haunting whale song tunes and 'The Frankenstein Project', which terrifies me every time I look in, I don't know why! I still like the Victorian architecture of the North Shore, but I think this makes a nice contrast and somehow suits the more brash South Shore end of Blackpool. The Great Promenade Show is a series of outdoor art installations and are really impressive. The revolving wind shelters are amazing - absolutely beautiful and stylish - sit in then and they gently rotate with the wind to keep the wind off you whatever direction it's blowing it. Sadly some very inconsiderate people sometimes put rubbish on them but they are amazing. The worlds largest mirrorball is amazing, especially at night, and the Glam Rocks installation is really pretty.

Although small, the stately old pavillion on Aigburth Rd is an impressive ground for an amateur sporting club and hosts first class cricket for Lancashire at least a couple of times a year and on a sunny afternoon it is easy to see why cricket is the perfect summer sport. Because of its size you can also rub shoulders with some of the players should there be any of the big names playing. However, the ground is also a venue for local car boot sales and you can find out when these take place on the clubs website. I have been here a few times for family parties and wedding receptions and it makes a good venue amidst the leafy green setting and cricket pitch stretching out in front of the main hall/pavillion.

And always a nice friendly place to visit if you need advice on any neurological conditions from autism to brain injuries and beyond. They are an independent charity and if memory serves me correct, they are the only charity of their type in Merseyside.

Ah, the Atkinson. Again, just another Southport landmark full of childhood memories for myself…read more Yep, my father used to bring me here regularly to ensure I had a lovely cultural upbringing, and it's a marvellous gallery housed in a terrific building right in the centre of the seaside town itself, opposite Lord Street and the band stand. Admission is free but donations are encouraged as every gift helps, no matter how small. And once you've walked around this spectacular yet strangely humble gallery you'd have to have a heart of ice not to want to give a little something. It has a varied and rather extensive collection, ranging from LS Lowry to John Piper, John Collier to Ernest Normand and many more. The Friends of the Atkinson Gallery are an organisation which helps to drum up even more interest for the gallery. It's currently closed for refurbishments but plans to reopen bigger and better than ever as part of a Southport cultural overhaul, so get involved as it's bound to increase in popularity after its makeover. Southport might not quite rival Brighton yet in the seaside artsy stakes, but it's getting there, and with the help of the Atkinson it'll get there a lot faster!

The bookings and information desks are unobtrusive, yet easy to find as the signage throughout is very clear. There are interesting display cases throughout. Up the impressive staircase are the toilets, the superb but expensive bar and the entrances to the auditorium. As I was there for a music concert, this is the area I saw best. A superb setting for Fairport Convention as they attract a fair number of fans, yet like to connect with their audience as intimately as possible. The seating was comfortable and gave us all a good view of the band. The sound was just superb.

Born and raised in England, I followed Oxford United (my hometown team) to many stadiums all over the country at away games, and later followed Liverpool (my fave team) around. It's one of the best stadiums in the country, it's got an intense, rabid atmosphere, it's in a poor area and still represents the common people that have been coming here for, now, centuries. Absolutely fantastic place to play and watch football. The fact that it's just across the park from Liverpool's Anfield just makes it more fun. These rivals are literally next door neighbours. The stadium can hold 40k and was built for football. It opened in 1892 and Everton have played here ever since. A FA Cup Final and several 1966 World Cup Games were held here.
