First you should know this is actually "North End Barber Shop", even though it is listed as "Mike's Barber Shop". Jay is the current owner, and has been cutting my hair for several years. He is a true professional who takes a great deal of pride in his work. I can tell him I want my hair to look good for a business trip one week from now, and he knows exactly what to do. Ok, so, I was pretty excited to go here. Well, my regular barber, packed up and moved up north...to Cascade. I was in NY for a few weeks, came back and he was gone. You could basically see the tears billowing under my eyes when the owner of the shop told me, "Johnny is no longer with us. He packed up and moved to Cascade to start a cab company" My heart stopped for a second...or two. It was awful news to come home to. I had to find a new barber. I was starting to look like a hippie (not that there is anything wrong with that. Its just not who I am...anymore lol) So, I go to North End Barber Shop. I had noticed this place a few months prior to my visit. I thought, oh how cool...another small barber shop. Its small, homey, like a mom and pop shop. Kinda reminds me of the barber shops back home in NY, or the one Johnny worked at (Jacks Barber Shop on Overland). So, I decided to finally check it out. I waltz in, excited to get mah hair did. There was a big dude there, not sure what his name was...you'll know him when you see him though. Big, jolly, guy. Very nice. Anyway, he took me right away. There was also an older woman working there. I believe there is one other guy who works there, but I over heard he was out, due to an injury. I tell, Big Guy, "ok so, I want it buzzed on the side...pretty much down to skin...high up and then faded in perfectly. Kind of like a military cut...just the fade in needs to be perfect"..(Johnny was a master at this. YES! I loved Johnny haha! He was the man and knew how to cut hair...but I digress....) So then, I tell Big Guy, just a little off the top. He did great with that. I gotta keep on top what I have left HA!!...Thankfully though, I have a lot. Not losing it that fast, but ya know. THEN! OMG! He buzzes the sides, the lines don't match up, one side of my head had a piece where he buzzed way too high...didnt match up with the line on the side. Then, the fade....seriously? I couldn't even call it a fade. I LEGIT looked like a militant lesbian version of Shia LeBouf without that ratty ass tail he has.... and with the lines I had....which were supposed to be faded....it looked like I had a bowl on my head....like Shia LeBouf! I looked like the militant lesbian Shia...who lived in the Amazon and who should be scaling trees for exotic fruits and things. It was tragic. He told me, "its really hard to fade these lines in the way you asked" Ok, I'm sorry, but why are you are a barber? Tell me again how this happened? Like I said, nice guy, very straight forward. I said I wanted one thing done and he said "oh no, I think that would look awful! I personally think that point in the pack looks hideous on people" So much for trying a new and weird look. OH MY GOD! I JUST WANNA BE A HIPSTER, OK!??!!! haha! jk! They are the worst. Again, nice guy, straight forward. Dream crasher :-/ He tell you what is good and what is not.....but then he will leave you looking like a big ole militant lesbian version of Shia LeBouf. Thankfully, my roommate, used to cut hair back in the day and was able to fix it....somewhat. I mean, it was that bad. Thank God I am not a 12 year old....I would seriously be getting my ass beat everyday for the next 2 weeks!!! UGH! haha! Be Aware of this place!! or just of him! I got a haircut from Jay last week and loved it, when he was done. I'm used to getting haircuts which I love and then go home & shower and my hair sticks up like crazy. Not with this cut. I can now say, 4 showers later, that this is the best haircut I've ever gotten. Throw in that Jay only charges $20 and I'm a big fan. read more

Probably fine for adults. Do NOT bring any kids here. I have gone here for a few years and lately started to bring our boys. Last time he was grumpy but manageable. The last time (and it will be the last time) he was horrible to our kids. He complained about their hair and that he doesn't get up to deal with this. Terrible experience. read more

Not the greatest haircut, and slightly higher prices than you can find elsewhere. Shop ambiance felt strained and forced. Conversation was... odd. It's an OK haircut in a pinch, but you can find better for your regular shop. read more

Jeff ( another review called him "the big guy") has been my barber for more than a decade. He started cutting my hair when I was in college and even though I have moved to another city, and he has moved shops - I still make the time to get my hair cut by him. Jeff uses a straight razor on the back of your neck instead of just using clippers so his haircuts look better for longer. Jeff also cuts my Son's (4 y/o) and my Daughter's (2 y/o) hair. He is great with kids and they love to go visit him; the only issue they've ever had is arguing about who gets to go first! Jeff is a great guy and I HIGHLY recommend him! read more

I spent several years looking for a new barber and went through more than a dozen of them at places from old-time barber shops to salon franchises. Got a lot of lousy haircuts. Then I tried Jay at the North End Barbershop. I've been going there for over a year now and have never gotten a bad haircut. If you're in a hurry, go to a franchise. If you want a barber who takes his time and gives you consistently good haircuts, go to Jay. He even explains the subtle things he does to make your cut look better as he's doing them. The other barber there, Ryan, is also excellent. The reviewer who wrote that the conversation is strained and the haircuts so-so must have gone on a bad day or a day when someone was subbing for one of them. The conversations when I've been there have been as good as the haircuts. This isn't just an old-time barber shop; it's what the old-time barbershops aspired to be. read more
