I try eat at Grace and St. Peter's in Hamden, CT on most Sundays. I usually have my usual Sunday…read moremorning fare: a piece of bread and a sip of wine. Unlike other places I often visit, the bread at GASP, which is what the locals call the place, was more substantial than some of the other places I've visited. It seems to be baked by folks at GASP. I've been there before, and usually they have a nice ruby port to go with the bread, but recently, they've replaced it with a white wine. I prefer red with my bread, but it was still good. The service was good, although it can get a bit slow at times when they sing hymns with many verses. Sometimes they have a cabaret prior to the meal. If the Cherub Choir is performing, you are in for a treat. They are recently going through a change of management and I hope they keep much of their familiar old ambiance. For my second course, I had coffee and donuts. This was in a more casual part of the establishment, frequently referred to as the Brewster room. This second course, also called 'coffee hour' can be a bit hit or miss, depending on who is cooking, but it isn't something you should miss. It is also worth noting that they have a fantastic dinner on Friday evenings called "Dinner for a Dollar". Yup, a great meal for only a buck. You can't go wrong. I encourage people to visit Grace and St. Peter's frequently.

Aside from the people working at the festival not being the least bit hospitable or friendly, the only other disappointment was the major reason most of my friends and I attend every year.This year the food was definitely not up to par. The Moussaka lacked any flavor as did the pastries. I have grown accustomed to restaurants in this area cutting back on the quality of their ingredients. However,when you support a local church festival , you don't expect the portions to shrink, the former seasoning ingredients to be left out or compromised, and for formerly delicious Greek food to have absolutely no flavor.

For many of these poor Catholic immigrants, their church was the center of life in an otherwise unfriendly environment and they built grandiose churches and schools as their communal legacy. This wonderful building, dating to 1890, is a testament to the desires and dreams of generations gone by and it is magnificent. The bright colors of its stained glass windows match the bright blue trim of the neo-Corinthian columns, evoking ties to Mediterranean scenes. The large nave has seating for about 600 people and a height of about 100 feet. A wonderful historical architectural relic in old New England.
