Okay, this is a shopping centre, and not a particularly spectacular one at that (not that I actually consider shopping centres all that spectacular, especially since they happen to be full of chain stores). However, it does have most, if not all, of the basic things that you would need if you happen to be in Northcote. However, it isn't actually a drawcard for the suburb, especially since the action on High Street is so much better. As such it seems to be a little run down and worn out in places. Actually, it seems to have two distinct sections, though I suspect that it is actually two separate shopping centres, one on each side of a narrow alley. However, I wouldn't recommend coming to Northcote just to check out the shopping centre, or even checking out if you happen to be in Northcote - there are much, much better things to do. read more

Northcote Plaza is very much a local shopping experience. Unless you live in the immediate area there is no reason to drop in on your way past. It is very handy for groceries. Coles, delis, bakeries and Kmart mingle with discount shops and uninspired fashion and cafe choices. A couple of chain stores are represented, but don't be mistaken, this is no Chadstone. It is very family and senior friendly in that the size makes it manageable and the cheap food options are plentiful. The shops seem to be tailored to both demographics and the clientele reflected this. Don't get me wrong, locals of all ages will appreciate the ease of which they can grab ingredients for dinner or post a letter however many outlets and area's of the mall reflect the era it was built in, the 1980's. Northcote Plaza provides everything you need from a local shopping mall, but it doesn't do it with style. read more

Northcote plaza is pretty much a basic plaza that serves the purpose of meeting basic needs, nothing more nothing less. Don't ever mistaken this plaza for the emporium or chapel street. Rest assured no designer brands stuff or over priced crap or bs. It has Coles (two coles), Aldi, Kmart, clothing stores, discount store, butcher, chemist, chicken chips, bakers delight, pizza, Asian food, a restaurant etc. It's pretty much all you get. It is beautifully located next to the police station and a parkland, usually occupied by teenagers who wag school, drunk people, people getting high or smoking a bong. I shop there regularly and can't speak of anything that excites me, other than seeing the police arrest some trouble makers. My stance on it is neutral. I don't love it or hate it. I suppose the place gets a pass. As long as they sell my favourite cigarette and I can drink my can of UDL in peace at the park, and get a glimpse of some good looking people once in a while, I'm satisfied. read more

Northcote plaza post office have some compassion for a young girl you asked for help this morning as she was feeling very unwell!! Instead of giving her help she was told to go outside where she was sick and embarrassed by people walking passed!! As a mother who lives 2 hours away it's very upsetting to hear this, as she is a young uni student finding her way around Melbourne! Thankgod country people are kind caring and would never turn away from someone needing help. Enjoy this trip: Because it is a trip: Step back in time (about 30 years back in time) Welcome to Nutbag Plaza!!!! This place even has its own police station in the carpark!!!! OK, time to start being serious! Its hard to not laugh when thinking about Nutbag, but the reality is that its actually quite a good shopping centre! Here is how I go about it coming in from the police station end: 1. Find a parking spot with no difficulty at all 2. Walk through the front doors and there are some skill tester machines full of fluffy plush toys. Waste a dollar or two and win something for your kids to fight over 3. Look to the left and there is a pretty good Coles 4. Look to the right and there is a $2 type shop with quite a good range of stickers for your kids to fight over and a whole heap of junk that you may want to use for a fancy dress party 5. Look straight ahead and there is a little place (buggered if I know what its called) that is supposed to sell Asian food but does really good milkshakes 6. Keep going and you will get to the Commonwealth Bank ATM and there is a newsagent on the right and a butcher on the left. The butcher has a TV so its great if the cricket is on 7. Keep going and out the right hand door is Friends Kebab - the best kebab place in Melbourne (see my review on it for details) 8. Around here there is usually some temporary thing taking up the middle - a bookshop or a bloke dressed as Father Christmas or something 9. Go straight ahead and you enter the area of really bad fashion (in the shops) and old people shouting at eachother (in the mall in general). Dont EVER EVER EVER buy a piece of clothing from one of these places 10. On the right is a very very good sushi place and a bit further on there is a Chinese food place 11. There is a pet shop further up on the left 12. Then you enter bakery territory and icecream shop type places 13. Kmart is on the left and next to it is another Coles - just in case one wasnt enough - which believe it or not can actually be quite useful - as the first one may not stock what you are after, you just head to the other one - its like having a substitute right there just in case you need it! Maybe its the first ones stunt double - who knows.... 14. Veer around to the left and you get to more junk shops and the post office 15. Head outside and cross the path and go uphill (yes - uphill inside a building) and see Sams warehouse and another supermarket as well as a fruit shop and more old people shouting at each other 16. Keep going further uphill inside and there are more little cafes and junk shops 17. Finally after reaching the summit there is a bank (not a common one) and I think there is a medicare there (for when the old peoples arguments turn to blows) and then you finally escape onto High Street and the tram stop is out the front.... This place cops an enormous amount of criticism, but despite its blatant ridiculousness, its actually not that bad!!! This place is fucked. Northcote Plaza uncovers the dregs of society that makes Northcote such a shit hole of a suburb. If you wanna get leered at by singlet clad youths, yelled at by nanas, and generally ignored by business owners and staff, Northcote Plaza is for you. There are supermarkets and 'speciality stores' but there are few reasons to go there apart from: 1) there is a sock guy that does great deals on socks and stocks knee high whites for summer wear. 2) The deli is pretty good, if a little pricey, and they are pretty genuine folk. & 3) There is a bay marie style Chinese joint that dish up a hang over cure on a plastic plate. Wash it down with a cola and don't get stabbed on your way to the car yo. read more

One of the things I've noticed about Melbourne - and perhaps Australia - is how so many of its shopping malls seem to be stuck in the 1980s. And Northcote Plaza is no exception. First of all, it doesn't make a lot of sense. Not only are there two supermarkets here - which in and of itself isn't that strange - there are two Coles supermarkets. Why? I don't know. What's equally strange is that they don't always stock the same stuff. So if Coles #1 doesn't have what you need, just mosey on over to Coles #2, there's a good chance they'll have it instead. Surely it would be more cost-effective to have one Coles that stocks everything? Oh no, that would be too easy. Secondly, there is this whole 'mall' sandwiched between the two Coles. Yes, there's a Kmart, which I suppose is useful. But beyond that, there's a morass of discount shops, bakeries, Chinese takeaway shops and clothing stores selling things that I really don't think were ever in fashion. WTF? On the plus side, the mall really does attract a broad subset of the local population - hipsters, recent immigrants, senior citizens, bored high school kids, people who enjoy wearing track pants, etc etc - so it's pretty inclusive. But it would be nice if the non-Coles related shops actually sold things I would buy. read more

Obviously all the 3 star and less reviewers have not ventured passed the Kmart. There is a second coles and plenty more to explore at the Northcote plaza. Which is objectively the best shopping precinct in Melbourne's north. I am concerned about how the new development will affect the ambiance of the linceaft/Aldi precinct of the plaza. I shop, I socialite and I love for the beating heart of Melbourne which is northcote plaza. It is my spiritual home, if this changes my nana will turn in her grave. read more

Sad perhaps but Northcote Plaza - with its big Kmart, small nut shop, inexplicably located Sussan store and a raft of very tacky gift shops - was my introduction to the Australian mall oeuvre. Describing itself as a 'sub-regional shopping centre located in Northcote' - which frankly makes it sound as if it's ripe for anthropological study - Northcote Plaza Shopping Centre is actually a very handy, if unglamorous, shopping complex just off Northcote's high street. Need to stock up on nuts? Head to Northcote Plaza. Looking for some earrings made out of dreamcatchers? One of the Plaza's seemingly permanent pop up jewellery shops will take care of that. Vitamin Crazy is worth a visit, as is the Plaza's pet shop and there's even a massive and well staffed Post Office branch to boot. Of course the real draw to this otherwise quite sleepy mall is doubtless Coles. But to visit Northcote Plaza for nothing more than the ingredients from Masterchef would be a waste. Have a mozey around the Plaza. At the very least its incongruous mix of shops will make you giggle. read more

The Northcote Shopping Plaza is a bizarre shopping centre indeed. With two Coles supermarkets, not a single piece of fashion clothing in sight and more junk shops than a Chinese mall. Considering the amount of delicatessens, fruit shops, bakeries, butchers, continental bulk stores, a kitchen supply store and of course Coles supermarkets around every corner, I firmly believe that this place is run by the food mafia. But hey I am not complaining. I love food and I love the Northcote shopping plaza. read more

Uummmm, where do I start? Not really a big fan of Northcote plaza.... There are some good shops and some that shouldn't be there. With all the new apartments going up you would think an upgrade would be happening but noooo.... The central part is pretty ok since being refurbished but that's about it. You'll find Aldi, a butcher, fruit & veg shop, Lincraft, The Reject Shop and CBA. Then across the way in the plaza I'll only go as far as Priceline, Kmart and Coles. There's a really great butcher on the other side as as well an overcrowded Millers, Optus shop, Sussan and recently opened Suzanne Grae and that's about it. If nothing gets done soon then more shops will be closing.... One tip, go in, get what you need, get out! read more

Northcote plaza.... the parking is good. Lets be honest, there are days when I want to do the Queen Victoria market with my vintage shopping trolley and marvel at the amazing produce and drink amazing coffee feeling all cool and self righteous,and there are days when I want to drive over in my comfy clothes, do a mega shop at Coles, then swing my the nuts place for my guilty pleasure of dark chocolate coated marzipan (and some coffee), and then pick up some warm borek before heading home. Yes, there are some really weirdly unappealing cafes. But there is also Degani cafe (a BIG one) which faces the parkland and does a decent coffee and a great range of healthy salad lunches. read more

I couldn't believe what I saw written on the back door of a disabled toilet theres probably nothing like it in the whole of melbourne maybe not even in old Nazi Germany, went in there after i injured my leg walking into a dimmly lit area near aldi where two solid steel benches sat in the walkway and I'm scarred for life it happened at closing time and the staff leaving stores didn't even stop they walked passed me while i was groaning with pain and had blood all over my hands....used to be a local regretted stopping there that evening read more

One of the last inner urban shopping centres that are reminiscent decades past. Bit of a dive really that could really use the upgrade, surprised it hasn't yet. I will say the large butcher near the supermarket stock some of the best meat around. read more
