Amazingly clean dining area. Fairly well lit with a good feel. Portions were very large and the food tasted very good! Staff was quick and polite! Definitely recommend and will definitely be back!!!

There aren't too many quality Chinese restaurants around in Albany, considering the predominantly Caucasian demographic, but this is one of them! Very good quality and value for the price. It's a casual home-style restaurant (compared to more upscale decor places like Ala Shanghai and Rain) with very friendly staff and quick services that serves mostly Northeastern and Szechuan dishes. They also offer hotpot, but I haven't tried it yet. They have the stamp of approval from my parents, which says a lot, and we frequently see Chinese exchange students eating here as well so you know it's authentic :) The menu is long with lots of mouthwatering photos, but my favorite dishes so far have been: Five color salad Green beans Eggplant with minced pork Mapo Tofu Spicy fish soup with mustard greens Salted egg yolk pumpkin Sweet and sour pork *Tip: paying in cash is 10% cheaper!

Spicy tofu- way too greasy. Bad texture. Tofu should be made crispy first then add sauce. This tastes like boiled in oil.

Tried the spicy tofu this time- really not good. Stick with a dry pot version. And they should get rid of the bugs flying around- pretty annoying.

We visited during an odd hour of the day so the restaurant was pretty empty. However, the attentive service and ample spacing between tables were appreciated in these times. While the beef dish lacked a bit of seasoning, everything else on the menu was delightful. The servings were generous, leaving us happily satisfied. The cleanliness of the place was commendable, adding to the overall pleasant dining experience.

If you want authentic Chinese food this is the place for you. Their food is fresh with flavors that are on point. The menu is huge but there are so many great options. My younger son loves the egg with chives and my oldest is a fan of the chicken with peppers. Their dumplings are house made and bursting with flavor. Their hot pot is really the jewel in their crown. The broth is mild to allow for the flavors of whatever you add to it. There are many options to try and it's all you can eat!!! A great value considering the incredible items you can add. The staff is wonderful. We asked questions and they were honest and very helpful. We've returned a few times and the food is on point every time! Check them out!

It's 3.5 star / B for the food here. Friendliness of the waiters: 4/5 The wait staffs are friendly but could have been more attentive to check how the food went, refill tea or iced water or napkins, etc Taste of the food we have ordered: 1) hot and sour soup 3/5 Ingredients were all there, slice of tofu, bamboo shoots, egg drop, wood ear mushrooms!! But the taste wasn't balanced. Too heavy on the vinegar side and too much white pepper in it!!! Kind of unbearably spicy! 2) stir fry water spinach with garlic 5/5 Totally devoured the whole dish!!! Great garlic flavor and veggie was still crunchy and green!!! Well done! Soooo delicious! 3) boiled beef cooked in chilli oil 5/5 Super flavorful! Lots of chunky sliced beef, bean sprouts, wood ear mushrooms and some corn, dried chilli in the dish! Beef is tender! Deliciously spicy! 4) salt and pepper squid 1/5 Didn't expect the squid would be soooo rubbery chewy! As the dish arrived, I already knew it wasn't right. I was expecting the salt and pepper squid to be deep fried and crispy like calamari. But no.... They were not chewable... sooo hard and rubbery. So I went up to the front desk and ask for the clarification what the dish supposed to be. Apparently they say when u order this dish ... u have to specify the "crispy kind"! The waitstaff was very nice about it but I mean I didn't even know ... the menu could have been more clear about the difference. As for a first timer to the restaurant, I wouldn't have known this. So that was a waste of money and food . Didn't enjoy the salt and pepper squid at all. Ambiance: 4/5 Causal dining/ lots of four seaters and big round tables/ super spacious. Clean overall! Service: 4/5 Fast and reliable. The food was piping hot when they arrived!

Came to this Albany Chinese restaurant. It was pretty authentic. Came around lunch time so not crowded but the other patrons were all Chinese. We ordered the Szechuan roasted whole fish in spicy sauce. The whole thing can serve as a meal- it had tofu, tree ears, potatoes, various vegetables as well as other ingredients. The dis was not too spicy but had a kick. It was as the Szechuan dishes run MaLa. The peppercorns were fragrant and numbing. That was my favorite part. The fish was flaky and meaty. Had to take the leftovers home. We also ordered another "meat" dish of cumin lamb. Then we ordered the water spinach stir-fried with garlic and the eggplant with minced pork. The eggplant was melting-in-your-mouth yummy. The service was prompt and friendly. I loved the space apart tables and the booths. I have to go back and try other dishes.

Food is great. The place is clean. The only criticism is once the wait staff drops your food, they never come back to check on you.

Wow. It was great. I rarely have such an immediate reaction. It was every bit as wonderful as I hoped it would be. Almost too spicy. Makes your lips burn sort of spicy. At least, my face didn't break out in a sweat. For my taste, this was authentic Szechuan with just enough heat. It was a large portion. I had enough leftover for a meal the next day. I tried to plate the meal to do it justice even though it was takeout. This was my first visit to Shu. The interior looks nice. The woman at the counter was friendly. I'd heard a great deal about the restaurant. Trying to decide what to order on my next visit.

I opted for the brown rice. Funny how our palates change over time. When I was younger, I hated Brussel sprouts. Now, I love them. Same situation here. When I was younger, I would have said the bok choy with garlic was plain and boring. Now, I taste it as a more subtle dish. It is served in a broth, not the cloying sticky sauce that's usually made thicker by the addition of a corn starch/flour slurry. The broth allows for the flavor of the bok choy to shine. I'm guessing the dish was made with MSG as well. Nothing wrong with MSG, it is one of the ingredients which provides a savoriness or meatiness to a dish - umami. The bok choy was trying hard to be meaty. Also, the addition of sesame oil was evident at the end of a bite, the slight taste and whiff of sesame becoming more pronounced. Home style tofu - this was comforting and satisfying with a slight kick of spicy heat. It's like grandma hugged you and squeezed your cheek, for good measure. There was a corn starch slurry used in this dish but it sort of calls for it; it's a more substantial protein rich dish. I honestly didn't miss meat at all when eating this meal. The dishes provided today proved to me that the cooks at Shu Chinese can do subtle...and they can do spice (mala). I'll definitely be back for more.

It felt brutal as the wind pierced through my coat. Winter still had us in its icy grip even if the calendar said that Spring was only days away. I was alone and I was happy to take refuge in the warm restaurant with its welcoming decor. There are pretty Chinese lamps at each booth as you enter. In the back, the large round tables were filled with families who appeared to be throwing a party. The server told me I could sit wherever I'd like. I chose the first booth. I was only too happy to come in from the cold and sit. Oh, the bowl of soup that I ordered turned out to be a dream come true! It wasn't just any soup. It was the Wonton Noodle soup lunch special at Shining Rainbow on Central Ave. in Albany. The menu is in both English and Chinese. After looking at the description, I thought I had an option to add some meat to the soup. So I asked for some roast pork. After I placed the order, a young man from the kitchen staff actually came out to ask me what kind of noodles I wanted in my soup: skinny, medium or wide. He spoke to me in Chinese. I must have really confused the staff because a second staffer also followed him out and he asked me exactly the same question in English. I was really surprised. I said to them in (Mandarin) Chinese, " Don't you usually use the thin noodles for this soup? I'll take what's easiest for you to prepare." So I realized later--after they'd gone--that I didn't actually answer their questions. I must have added to their confusion but they were so very nice and polite. About 10 minutes later, a server returns with a huge steaming bowl of soup. I'm still so cold and when I see the steam rising in the distance from the soup bowl, I'm smiling. He places the soup in front of me. It's a thing of beauty. It also had vegetables that I didn't ask for, but that's not a bad thing. I took one look into the bowl and expressed my shock, "Wow. It's huge." The server looked satisfied and walked away. Underneath the roast pork and bright green veggies, there were thin noodles swimming in soup. It smelled divine. But there were no wontons. Should I say something? No. Because this meal looked perfect. Despite the confusion that I might have contributed to-- I wound up with what I really needed--a delicious and healthy hot meal. I almost finished it, too. The servers packed the rest up for me. When the bill came, I wondered what it would be. The lunch specials which are offered Monday- Saturday are just over $10. Almost $11. Sure enough, that's what they charged me. I gave them a large tip. I think $5 or $6. They were just so nice. Perhaps I looked so cold and pitiful. Whatever the reason, it was an awesome meal that didn't break the bank and I hope I can order it again sometime with or without wontons.

So of course, cooking and acquiring food while binging movies and TV shows on cable became the obvious means by which to deflect attention from the rising COVID body counts world-wide and dire predictions. High anxiety was the order of the day, and tippling, cooking, take outs and eating became a reliable means to blunt it. Between TV binging we continued our years long, fanatical search for Xiao Long Bao -- or anything Asian to cook of takeaway and eat TV-side. HU's is a small Chinese joint in Albany, near where we received our Covid vaccines, and a good 90 minute drive from our home. There was nothing that vaguely resembled a good Shanghainese take out joint any closer - so when we didn't care to cook Asian, we made the trip to Albany for takeaway. As it turns out, HU's makes some authentic and delicious soup dumplings, and other dim sum like shrimp har gow, perfectly seasoned sweet/sour soup and some very tasty Scallion pancakes and Peking style duck. It was well worth the 3 hour round trip to take away -- or even eat in. The restaurant enforced social distancing making the eat in experience feel safe and authentic. I dunno. It's been a while since our HU's excursions in 2021, but I think in hindsight the food is truly a solid 4 stars good. I can't get to 5 stars because I could not rate the service due to pandemic restrictions in restaurants. Service was diminished due to social distancing during Covid times - but the restaurant was sparkly clean everywhere we looked. I imagine the same is still true today. So if you find yourself craving Shanghainese when in Albany, NY - HU's is a solid choice. The fact that their food selection and quality was high during the worst pandemic in the last 100 years speaks volumes about HU's food cred. Top tip: Even though the dumpling skins are bit on the thick side, stick with XLB and dim sum. They are NY Chinatown worthy. The usual Cantonese dishes like egg foo young, chow fun and ribs are serviceable too.
