The RA was not helpful, it continued. Spoke with the head of the department and was treated like a complainer and not taken seriously. I personally had to go in person and speak with the roommate and was treated like the problem, when I had written proof of the bullying etc. It was my daughter's first college experience and I felt like the school failed. My daughter also is a minority student and I felt like it could have also been a reason for the lack of action and poor treatment. I eventually had to PAY for another room so she could be at peace. When she wasn't the problem! It is a beautiful campus but feels like it falls short of making minority students feel welcome. I witnessed students writing racial slurs on white boards on campus, " Jews can die", etc and profanity. Not a good look for a school to allow things like this to happen. Beware if you are a minority student, it doesn't treat you well.

Dating back to 1910, it's grown and grown to the point that it's now the third-largest university in Ohio. And of course, it's infamously known as the site where the May 4 shootings took place where the National Guard fired on students assembled and protesting in opposition to the US involvement in the Vietnam War. There is a huge memorial and of course, the Center for Applied Conflict Management that was founded after those events. [Review 1362 of 2024 - 281 in Ohio - 22385 overall]

The May 4th Visitor's Center was small and nicely done. We took an hour reading everything. Walking…read morein was like going back to the 60s and early 70s. There were lots of b/w photos, yet colorful psychedelic posters, too. The history of the U.S. during the Civil Rights era was portrayed up to the shooting of the KSU students on May 4, 1970. The film of bystanders' actual footage of the National Guard marching around a peaceful group of students, then aiming their guns and shooting, brought tears to my eyes as four students laid dead and others were wounded with one paralyzed. Across the hall is a rotating exhibit, and misc. memorabilia. Outside is a memorial, and a walking path showing how the event went down. Parking is .25/12 minutes. Take quarters for the lot behind the building, then go up the steps to Taylor Hall.

Today we are taking an official campus tour. What a place! There is everything here. As a parent, I'm close to tears as I am amazed at the opportunities that kids today have in regards to their education. This is nothing like when I was in school in Madrid....nothing. You can be anything you want to be. There are so many resources . Kent has an amazing assortment of majors. I'm so glad it's close to home. The school is so built up. There are new dorms, new buildings. Did you know they actually have a university in Florence, Italy? Apparently this is to support the fashion and architecture programs. How cool! They have a program to study abroad in Italy. Kent is definitely a very fine and progressive university. I am thrilled that they offer a number opportunities for the next generation.

Nalsen was born in Sweden, but grew up in Venezuela, so she speaks both Swedish and Spanish and her ascetic combines the vibrant colors that reflect her Latin America experience with the clean simple lines often associated with Scandinavian design. She learned how to weave in Sweden in the early 80's, and then returned to Venezuela and taught weaving and tapestry to children in a private school in Caracas while weaving at the Taller Waleker in the El Hatillo district of Caracas. Nalsen also taught in various Venezuelan art schools. Since 2002, she has been regularly visiting Cincinnati. She has participated in various shows and exhibitions in Venezuela and the United States. She is a member of the Weavers Guild of Greater Cincinnati. In April 2009 she opened a studio with Teresa Nieberding at the Loveland Artist Studios on Main where she works and offer classes. Nalsen has participated in exhibitions at the Salveo Gallery, the Trillium Art Show, the Civic Garden Center, the Loveland Artist Studios on Main, the Loveland Art Show, as well at the November Fiber Art Sale at the Weavers Guild and the Winter Fair. I recommend visiting her at the Loveland Artist Studio's when they have their open house every Second Saturday of the month from 6pm to 10pm -- its is a fun way to see what more than 30 artists are doing and to pick up wonderful and unique gifts. http://gunmarietextiles.com
