Stopped here for a quick bite and some coffee. We were the first people there that morning so we had a nice selection of goodies from the case. I went with a bagel and cream cheese and a cappuccino. Everything tasted good ! The cappuccino didn't have too much foam and coffee was mild and not bitter- perfect. No sugar or flavor necessary, but only would have improved the taste (in my opinion). The place was extremely clean and everyone who worked their was so friendly and kind. There was a great vibe overall. Another awesome addition was the rack of board games! My friends and I sipped our drinks and managed to escape the cold for a few hours while we played games. Definitely a good spot to hang out for all ages. I could see it being a great place to spend with friends or to get down to the grind and get some work done. There is also an upstairs which I did not see. Oh and clean bathrooms - always a bonus ! The only thing I would have liked to see was a bit more expansive drink menu showing options. I like to try different things and there weren't any specials or different flavors that I saw - but I did hear people ordering them. read more

I was visiting the area during the presidents's day weekend and a lot of places were closed. A kind stranger on the street recommended this place and it was a jewel. Good coffee and have lots of milk options for us lactose intolerant friends. Also ordered a quiche and a burrito which were delicious. Cozy ambience. Very relaxing atmosphere. There's comfy chairs, free WiFi, a water cooler in the back, and a collection of board games if you have some time to kick back and chill. I initially walked in because they were advertising a tie dyed latte and I was curious. They had a selection of wraps, sandwichs, and salads. I ended up splitting a chicken salad wrap with my lunch buddy and we ordered an expresso and a tie dyed latte. Everything was great. The expresso was nice and strong, and my latte really hit the spot. Parking is street only with aggressive traffic outside (it's across from the courthouse and a nice fountain). The staff here was great, service was quick, coffee wasn't bitter, and the premise was clean and comfortable. I'll definitely stop in again next time I'm in the area. read more

We stumbled upon this place on our way home from NYC. It's right off the highway and easy to find, across from the park. The baristas were both very friendly and helpful to two caffeine deprived travelers. The hot cider was lovely - spiced and warm on a chilly almost-fall day. They had many choices for chai lattes - I settled on pumpkin spice latte. It turned out to be a great choice. It's a seasonal flavor (as you'd expect) so I'm so glad to have caught this pie-in-a-cup deliciousness. It made my day and got us the rest of the way back to Rochester. Northern Light Espresso Bar is a nice coffee shop with a great atmosphere right in the heart of Downtown Scranton. They have a decent size selection of pastries to choose from and a solid drink menu with very good drip coffee. (Make sure that if you order drip coffee there and plan to stick around for a while to get work done, that you order their refillable cup. I made the mistake of not ordering the blue mug my first time going and it cost me a pretty penny more to get my 1st refill) It's a fabric of the community with lots of events posted on the front door entryway and always filled with people doing work. It seems to be a popular U of S hang spot for students doing HW and professors writing exams. Hang out there, have a tasty drink and talk with a stranger. The atmosphere is friendly and the ambience is relaxing. It's now become the place I spend early mornings and occasional evenings doing work. read more

I've been going to this coffeehouse for years, seen it change hands many times, and yet, one thing remains the same -- Northern Light is about as good as it gets in Scranton. A great, friendly atmosphere to hang out with friends OR spend time by oneself reading or getting work done. Despite other reviews, I have yet to find the staff unfriendly or unhelpful, and, as I've said, I've been a customer for years. The owners are great and have really added to what's offered on the menu -- fantastic sandwiches, salads, bagels, pastries, etc. In the summer months, there's quaint, cafe-style seating outside. If you've come unprepared to spend time at NL, the owners have board games, newspapers, magazines, and books from which to choose to pass the time. Comfortable seating abounds -- whether it be at the ample supply of tables or the comfy couches downstairs or in the loft area. Northern Light is the premiere coffeehouse in Northeastern PA, conveniently located in Downtown Scranton with a great view of Courthouse Square. I highly recommend it!! read more

Adorable coffee bar! Friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful decor. They have a great variety of lattes, coffees and smoothies. I had the best double shot iced latte ever! No sweetener needed. My husband got an apricot, peach & pear smoothie....one tiny sip was all I needed, to confirm that it was out of this world good. We grabbed a chocolate cookie for the last leg of our journey home. So many tables and couches, even on a Saturday afternoon. However, I could lose my table vulturing skills if space was always this plentiful. Outlets: 5 stars. They are *everywhere.* Cambridge, take note! Drinks: 4.5 stars (pending my usual soy latte test). The gingerbread chai is delicious. The chocolate chai is delicious. The tiny cups of free hot chocolate and whipped cream because the barista made extra and gave it to us...also delicious. Food: 4.5 stars. The cheese danish and apple cinnamon danish are delicious. The other guy across the loft must think so too--he's eating three in a stack like pancakes. The Good: Great coffee! Awesome decor and lighting. Board games. Comfy seating. The Bad: Stereotypical coffee shop music. I think one of the employees had an ipod on, but it sounded like they were streaming Starbucks' music channel. The employees were a little snobby. I ordered a regular cup of coffee and the woman at the register made it seem like I was pulling her teeth. Then she gave me a dirty look because I didn't tip her for the poor service? Stay home if you can't handle working, princess. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd consider grabbing some coffee. Its better than Starbucks, but I rather not deal with hipster cookie cutters just for some coffee. read more

Espresso is the over-roasted, molassesy, traditional Italian kind; none of the brighter, fruitier beans you'd expect from a modern urban coffee bar. Food items are all sort of oversized and sweaty. But I do think they're trying and the place is atmospheric (e.g. high ceilings, comfy furniture, view of courthouse, and the occasional eye candy clientele). read more

The positives: the place has a nice vibe and there was a decent selection of baked good, salads, and bagels. The raspberry scone was excellent. I tried the pumpkin chai tea. It was very good, a little sweet but not so much to ruin it. The negatives: the service was painfully slow even with two people behind the counter and only a few people in line. The barista touched the rim of my mug a few times. This is a real pet peeve of mine. Will restaurant workers please stop touching the rims of my glasses and mugs? 3 stars...for now. read more

We stopped here for coffee on a long drive and ever since, we keep joking that we need to go back to Scranton for coffee because it was THAT good! Northern Lights is one of my favourite coffee shops in Scranton primarily because of its location and the ambiance. It's so comfortable here and the staff are so friendly! This place is in Scranton. SCRANTON. They have a Keys Van Der Weston Mirage. in S.C.R.A.N.T.O.N. Yea, that Scranton. Anyways, this place was a delightful, much needed stop during a 16 hour drive from Chattanooga to Syracuse. I had a slammin' shot of their house espresso blend that left me keyed up for the rest of the drive, but just incase I walked out with a cup of their drip as well. The cafe itself had a nice aesthetic, clean with plenty of natural light. I little cluttered but still a solid place to hang for a minute if you're ever unfortunate enough to find yourself stuck in Scranton. I'd definitely stop back in, although hopefully I wont be making that drive again anytime soon. Brutal. read more

Beautiful location and interior marred by incredibly rude staff with an overly favoring preference for students ruins what could otherwise be a nice Starbucks alternative. Was actually asked to leave once for not being a student. Fairly certain this type of discrimination is illigal. Under different management this place could shine. read more

ahhh nothern light! I've been going there for years now and I've seen renovations, different baristas, and just about every kind of person inside over time. They serve a heavy bodied solid drip brew and usually always have a few different roasts to choose from, which is nice. They brew mostly Gimme coffee, but I've also seen Cafe Kubal on drip. For espresso and cappuccinos, this is the place to go. Just awesome. The baristas are pretty much all coffee geeks and they have a Mirage espresso machine in house. read more

It's really nice to go to a local coffee shop with people from the nearby universities hanging out. There are obviously regulars and people seem to know one another. I've never been disappointed by anything I've had there...BUT, the service is lackluster. I just wish they were a little nicer. Incidentally, there is always interesting art on the walls.
