My general reaction to the range of eatables on offer is that they tend to the sweet. I guess I'd like something savoury on show even if I end up with a cake! The chairs can be a bit difficult here too. I don't know if it's true of all branches, but here there's a choice of hard chairs, or little sort-of armchairs. These look really comfy but the squashy cushions squash towards the front so you find yourself bracing on your legs a bit. I like this branch, as it's almost like the building itself is fighting 'chain-itis' and imposing its own character on the chain. Don't expect anything spectacular, but there's a nice courtyardy bit towards the back of the shop. Or you can head up a rickety old staircase to a room upstairs. Whether it's the fakeness or the general hilarity of it all...it's never been something I could get into. Why have I mentioned this? Well. The Frenchie makes a duck confit burger in a brioche bun with duck skin scratchings, onion chutney, and mustard, with a choice of blue cheese or smoked cheddar. This, my friends, is pure pornography (the French...who else?) and is dangerously close to becoming an addiction for me. I know that the whole sex-and-food thing is a bit hackneyed but, my friends, this is an extreme case. The entire experience is pretty sexual. The cooking and assembly of the burger is both filthy and tantalising as the duck sizzles in its own delicious fat and the cheese bubbles on the side. AND THEN THEY SCRAPE THE CHEESE FROM THE GRILL AND PLACE IT ON THE DUCK. Gott in Himmel. Talk about unfair. The end result is, well, stunning - the burger is a decent size and the brioche glistens with delicious, life-giving grease. Needless to say, it tastes as good as it looks - duck confit can be really hit or miss, but they do it just right here. I absolutely love the crunch of the crispy skin (it's deep fried separately just to make sure). I think the smoked cheddar is my favourite cheesy addition as it plays really nicely with the onion chutney and mustard, but the blue cheese is also good. This an ridiculously decadent beauty of a burger which everyone should try and at £6 it's worth every penny. The Frenchie, without doubt, is my favourite food stall in London right now (unfortunately the queues keep getting bigger too, but such is life), even if I can't help but feel slightly filthy afterwards. There was a big-ish queue (10 minutes) which we took as a good sign. Freshly made cheese sandwiches were on display, along with large pieces of raclette and sausission. The main staple here is a grilled cheese sandwich, but calling it that doesn't really do it justice - it's advertised as a mix of emmenthal and raclette cheeses on a sourdough bread with truffle oil and red onions. It's absolutely worth the wait - great sandwich, friendly staff and evidently popular as well.
