TRUST ME STAY AWAY FROM NORTHPOINTE BANK!!!! They purchased my mortgage and have been overcharging me for escrow insurance since day one. My down payment was large enough that I would pay escrow insurance. Their payment portal does not let you change the amount to be paid so you're forced to pay the amount they or not pay at all. I call after Northpointe after seeing this one as my first statement. The gentlemen I spoke to said he see they're over charging and put in a request to have a supervisor call me back. This was in April and I haven't heard from them still (7/27/22). I didn't pay April's statement hoping they would give me a callback. Nope, they reported to my credit that I was 30 days late payment...!!! These people are unreal and should not be able to operate a bank. I called today and spoke to a very rude lady that placed me on hold for 20 minutes to tell me she has put in a request for a Supervisor to give me a call lol! This place is a complete joke and plan to refinance with another institution. Do not be fooled!!! When I call my bank, they take care of anything I need immediately and have supervisors standing by to help. read more

This is the worst HYSA I've had the displeasure to work with. My plan was to take advantage of the 1.5% interest rate. Opening the account was the usual process - went just fine. After my initial $1k deposit I went to transfer a sizable amount and discovered that this bank does not allow ACH transfers between banks - they can only accept wire transfers or check deposit at a limit of $10k/day. To withdrawl funds, the same process. I tried calling in to discuss with them and guess what - their phone lines were down. I had to talk via chat and ask for them to call us. I told them I was shocked at their lack of ability to handle ACH transfers and wish to close the account. Because I'm closing before 120 days - a $10 fee and now I get to wait for my $990 check. Costly mistake of time and money. read more

I am extremely surprised by the amount of work Ellen and her associate Ashlee were willing to do on our account. I am experienced with mortgages loans to a degree that I know what I need to qualify, and that I did have what was needed in my profile to qualify. I have been trying for almost 3 years and extremely hard since February 2020. By March 2020 all factors were aligned to qualify for a loan but I could not find a loan officer that would take my file seriously. They refused to have an actual conversation and engage with me just stating I was wrong and I did not qualify. I had realtors and mortgage brokers completely ignoring my communications. When I met Ellen though a mutual relation, Ellen took the time to listen and look at my file, I explained to her I know my case would not be easy, but I know I met the qualifications to purchase a home. Ellen and her associate Ashlee asked for all the needed documents to look over and see if they could pre-qualify me and my wife. After a few days I received a call form Ellen where she explained she had great news, she said she was impressed with how much I seamed to know on this topic, and they yes I did and would qualify to purchase a home, she was saddened and upset to know that other mortgage brokers would not help my family simply because they wanted an easy case and did not want to work for their client. Ellen reinforced with me it would be a hard process, but if I would stick with her she would stick with me, and she guaranteed that we would get my family in a home. We went through 16 home offers or attempted offers from August until we finally closed and Ellen stuck with us through every hiccup, offer loss, hard spot, and confusion and helped secure my family a home we needed very much. For my family it was not just an investment, this is our new home, we have been in medical housing for over 3.5 years because my wife is terminal, this offers us a home again, a place to have our family dog back with us, a place to heal and see through treatments in a place that is ours again and that we can feel comfortable. This will help my family heal in many ways and help regenerate some energy lost over these last many years. I really appreciate Ellen and Ashlee taking on this process with us and fighting along side my family to get this home purchased so my family can have peace again. Ellen chose to work, and work very hard to get this deal finished, and she did not back down because it was not an easy open shut case like the majority of mortgage brokers we have talked to here in Denver. Their incompetent loan officer did not have the documents ready by the deadline of a property purchase contract. Therefore we lost the property, the earnest money + inspection and appraisal fees for a total of $3K plus wasted time. Stay away from this bank and loan officers! read more

A colleague recommended Thomas S. Tara for my HELOC Loan. I reached out in December of 2022 and Thomas and I begin the application process. He was guiding me and I was completing all of the necessary homework. I spent hours gathering all of the documents needed and sent them over to him as usual via email. Without notice, he stopped answering my calls, emails, text etc. I tried for months to reach him. At first I worried something tragic happened to him. I thought there was no way he could be that unprofessional. Knowing my family was depending on this loan! Knowing I was about to give birth to my first child and needed this loan to put my family in a better place! Then I worried that it was a scam! How could he not even give me a curtesy call/text/email something to advise if he wasn't going to continue assisting us?! I had my newborn on February 13, 2023. My last attempt to reach Thomas and his office was in May of 2023. It's September 2023 and still no call. Needless to say I gave up on expecting anything from this unprofessional man. read more

My loan officer discussed rates with me for a various period of time. Through the initial planning were talking about a 6.25% interest rate. When he sent me initial disclosures the rate showed 6.50%. I was obviously upset and confused as that wasn't what we were discussing. I spoke with my loan officer and he assured me that was worst case scenario. He talked me off a ledge. Over the next few weeks leading up to our closing date I would ask him what the rates were and if we should lock our rates. He said no and that they were creeping downward. One week I asked him and he didn't respond. It was approaching our closing date and wanted to have a good idea of what I was walking into. He sent me new disclosures that showed 6.99% AND I was paying 6K in points to get that rate. We never discussed points at all. To rectify the situation he suggested that we refinance in 6 months free of costs. I asked him if I needed to get that in writing, but that's what they offer everyone apparently. I will never use Northpointe or Michael Scrimager again. I'll suggest the same thing to everyone I know and warn them of the shady games he and his company plays. read more

As far as good customer relations goes, THIS BANK IS AWFUL! (They are the only bank that I have ever done business with, or heard of, who considers their savings accounts as checking accounts. That fact alone should have been an indicator to me that this bank was "different"). If there was a star rating less than 1, that is the rating of which this bank is worthy. In a nutshell, in less than 1-month I had an ending balance in the low to mid 6-figure range balance. In emails to Chuck Williams (CEO) and Billy Clancy (Retail Banking VP) that their bank policy of 5 (FIVE) days before an external transfer from another bank EVEN POSTED, let alone become an available balance, which was by far, the longest time period of any bank with which I had banked in my 45-year career as a commercial lender in the banking industry. When I offered what I consider to be constructive criticism in several emails, they--probably inept Billy Clancy--closed my account. I think this because this guy took criticism so poorly, that he offered to close my account after the first email to he and Chuck Williams. A day or so after I received a check for the balance in my account, and then the next day, I received a FORM LETTER in the mail that indicated that they thanked me for my input, and that they would be looking into my concerns. You think?? I don't know about the quality of the overall upper management staff of Northpointe Bank, but I can tell you from my communication with the CEO and Retail Banking VP are way over their heads in attempting to deal with their customers concerns, and their responsibilities as leaders of their bank. Because they are woefully inept in dealing with their customers, I question whether either of these 2 Northpointe employees would even qualify to handle the responsibilities of a branch manager in their bank, or any bank, and certainly not the positions that they presently hold at Northpointe Bank. When their customers have serious concerns about their bank operations, their reaction is to close out accounts that, in my case, had a significant amount of money entrusted to their bank. Just pitiful really. Do yourself a favor and stay as far away from this Grand Rapids, Mi. state-chartered bank as you can. read more

It's hard to give a good review for this bank even though I enjoy the 5% checking rewards account. Due to a direct deposit scam with another bank/employer, I no longer use direct deposit. I've finally made the switch to a mobile app with this bank. My best friend and I work for the same employer and she uses direct deposit- I use mobile banking. Her money is in the account Monday morning, while I receive and deposit my check Tuesdays via the app. We both deposit about $10K+/monthly. While on Monday morning she sits on this week's and last week's check, I am still waiting on the 5-day business hold on my mobile deposit. So while NorthPointe enjoys use of my two paychecks on a hold- my best friend enjoys hers in her hand. I'm still waiting for last Tuesdays deposit to post while getting ready to deposit another check tomorrow. Maybe it's just my opinion, but the check I deposited on the 19th cleared on the 20th, but then they pull the money back out and hold it for 5 business days- longer on holidays. This just seems absurd. It's not that I'm waiting until the last minute to pay bills or living paycheck to paycheck, but it's a paycheck- not a personal check. It's also a paycheck from a company I've worked for 10 years now. I don't know if other banks with apps handle transactions this way, but people seem to get cash at Walmart and grocery stores for their paychecks pretty instantly. read more

Don't use Northpointe Bank they will cost you money! After a two month long closing process in which the rate of 3.9% with an automatic payments that we were quoted climbed to 4.45% our loan officer never gave us the paperwork to apply for the automatic payments and did not inform us that it needed to be done prior to closing. After our loan officer admitted this was his fault he will not give us an exception for the mistake he made. Now the rate is at 4.7% and very close to other banks rates that I considered using which would not have had closing costs involved. Don't use this bank! read more

If it CAN be closed, Rick and Alexa Ward will get it done. I own a high volume fix and flip company in Colorado Springs, and Northpointe has been the bank that saves the deals that other lenders cannot close. As a seller, having a bank that can produce the result when other banks fail has saved me a ton of money and headache. As a home owner, I used Northpointe Bank to service my personal mortgage because of my experiences over the past few years with so many lenders. They failed to pay my homeowners insurance and my policy was cancelled. My insurance company agreed to reinstate my policy, but then they failed to pay the bill again and it was never reinstated. I was not aware until 2 months later when they notified me that my payment would go up 30% due to them providing me with a new policy. My insurance company could not reinstate the policy due to the amount of time that passed, and would not provide me a new policy due to my previous cancellation. I received a quote for a new policy from a different company, but at this point I have zero faith that this invoice will be paid either. Throughout this whole nightmare, their customer service reps have been little to no help. This company is terrible, and their escrow department is total joke. I am stuck with them because my original mortgage company sold my loan to them. If given the choice steer clear. read more

Fraudulent advertising re: interest rates earned on deposits. I opened an Ultimate Money Market Fund account at Northpointe, after searching the web for best interest rates. Northpointe was offering 1.50%, which was among the highest rates at the time. But my interest rate dropped to 0.40% -- without notice -- after about 1 year. I didn't realize for several months that the rate had dropped so precipitously, since I just filed my statements away without looking at them. But, once I noticed, I again searched the web for best interest rates, and Northpointe still came up in the top tier! I called Nortpointe, thinking there must be an error. But I was told that my 1.50% rate was just an introductory rate that had expired. It is their policy to NOT notify customers that their rates are now reverting to very low rates. I could request the higher current rate if I wanted to, but the rate would only apply to the current month and going forward. Meanwhile, I had missed out on hundreds of dollars of interest that I should have earned at 1.5%. So, needless to say, I have transferred all my funds to a bank that has honest policies. No need to expect a sudden rug to be pulled out from under my feet. Northpointe is simply dishonest and purposely engages in deceptive policies, hoping that their depositors will not notice that their rates have been lowered. Shameful! Also, this bank makes it very difficult to withdraw funds. You are limited to certain amounts per day, and you cannot do so from within the bank's own website. Other banks have much more user-friendly websites and withdrawal options. read more
