It's always a fun time coming here especially during events and open studios. This place is a landmark in the northeast arts district and is filled to the brim of local art to admire and take home. I've come here multiple times and have left with quite a few pieces now especially from DC Ice and AMF. Artists art friendly and are happy to chat or give you space, accommodating your desired experience. I would highly recommend coming during one of their major events during the fall or during art a whirl when the place is bustling with crowds to really add to the warmth of the space this place exudes. read more

Something (different) to do on a weeknight. On the first Thursday of each month, you can stop by the Northrup King Building (NE Mpls) to check out the galleries and shops of local creators. While there for an event, I got to do some wandering and purchased a few items. 1)Excelsior Candle Co.Snagged a pack of wax melts and a warmer. 2)Tipton-Hammond Arts. There's lots of beautiful art to choose from, and while it was hard to choose, I purchased a cool print. 3)MBMB. Lots of cute merchandise, but as soon as I saw this cute t-shirt that said, "I'd rather be doing arts and crafts", I had to get it. read more

Gotta love a place where like-minded people come together to create! This is the place to be in the city if you are an artist of any kind. This old building still has all it's character and soul. It is split into many smaller rooms, galleries and spaces. I love to attend all the art crawls held here throughout the year-Art Attack, Art-a-Whirl and more. This is when many of the artists open their doors for the public to come view and discuss their art, as well as purchase it. Parking is free on all sides of the building. Check with each individual studio or artist for hours. Some are open while they are creating art, others are appointment or structured hours only. read more

Parking is plenty and right next to the building, and the building is open every time I've visited, with services such as yoga, architecture, shipping, casting calls, furniture repair and upholstery and more. OKAY... my review is overdue! This place is AMAZING! I was just here for Art-A-Whirl (the showcase in the Spring) for the first time...I have been to Art-Attack (the showcase in the Fall) and I went with friends who know this place so well!!!! We started from the 4th floor and worked our way to the 1st floor...and found that the lower floors are more of where the "professional" artists are...and the art becomes even more awesome when you go down a floor! If you are looking for an alternative to a large museum, a day at the mall, or anything else you've done a dozen times, head over to the Northrup King Building the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 9pm for something different. More than 130 painters, photographers, sculptors, print-makers and other artists have studios and galleries in the massive former seed factory. The Northrup King Building is open the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 9 pm and is home to two of the twin cities' biggest shows - Art-A-Whirl, which takes place in the spring in locations throughout NE Minneapolis and Art Attack, which takes place in the fall and is exclusive to this building only. FYI - While some art studios have regular full-time hours, others are used as primarily production studios with limited event hours so make sure to call the individual artist, gallery or shop ahead of time. Wow....I'm shocked! I gotta say I was blown away when I went here last weekend for art-a-whirl festival. Minneapolis really does have an amazing art scene and the talent here is stellar. I used to go to a similar type of building in Los Angeles called "The Brewery" that was all artist live/work lofts that they would open to the public twice a year. It was great but not nearly as big or as much raw talent as the work I saw showcased at the Northrup building. I loved that all the studios were in 1 building so you didn't have to go outside which makes this the perfect get-a-way on gloomy days. I also love that it's open every month so you can enjoy it year round. The artists are very diverse so there's something for everyone from glass blowing, weaving, ice sculptures to bronze cast sculptures, they have it all! My favorite was this guy who created these wooden moving sculptures that you could pull a crank and they would animate and come to life! Truly amazing! I'm guessing the work is so much better out here than in LA because the weather is so bad that they have lots of time to indoors to hone their craft! Either way, Minneapolis has won my vote for best arts! read more

The best building the best arts district in America! There is something for everyone - from the art to the building itself. There are 4 floors filled with hundreds of artists. There are visual arts, as well as music, and performance. There's even a yoga studio! There are great events all year round, including Art-A-Whirl, Northrup King Nights!, and Art Attack. They are also open every First Thursday each month, and most studios are open Friday-Sunday during the midday and afternoon as well. read more

Came on Saturday for Art Attack. Not my first visit, and certainly not my last. It's a very cool old building, and the studio spaces themselves look awesome. Art attack has an insane variety of pieces from every medium you could think of, and across all price ranges. This time I bought a tshirt; last time it was earrings for my mom and a necklace for my sister. I'll definitely be back to holiday shop. My only complaint is that the staircases could be more clearly marked. read more

The Northrup King is open on First Thursday evenings from 5-9 pm each month, and 12-4 every single Saturday. The building is full of artist studios, each one quirky, unique, inspiring, and many with truly world-class art. I am a photographer in the Casket Arts Building across from the Northrup King Building, and often shoot people around the beautiful Northeast Neighborhood. This area is so wonderful for its old buildings, and makes a great background for portraits. For some reason, while shooting around the Northrup King Building, and I suppose maybe something happened once, they find the need to send someone out to rudely kick myself and my client off their property, saying "it's private property and we have to leave immediately ". Every house and building is private property, and because someone has a professional camera suddenly they are a threat to their building? I have shot all over this beautiful country, and this place is the only place besides a bank the forbids shooting around. If it were a commercial shoot I can see why they would have issue, but come on. You need to lighten up, I feel sorry for your artists that have to endure your wrath, its no place for the creative. Their is a waiting list for the Casket Arts Building, it is a wonderful community and well worth the wait. read more

This is an amazing and gigantic building filled with every kind of art making you can imagine and then some - from traditional to experimental. Art-A-Whirl was wild and wonderful, but some studios were pretty crowded for serious art viewing. I prefer the 1st Thursdays Studio Open House and open Saturday afternoons too when you can really spend some time with the art, ask questions, without the crush of visitors. read more

4 floors of amazing local art. I had no idea there was so much creativity in Minneapolis, until I had the opportunity to explore this building. There really is something for everyone....paintings, sculptures, metal work, wood work, clothing, jewelry, glass, pottery, etc.... What I really like is most artists have their studios right in the building, so you get to meet the artist and talk with them about their creative process. Fabulous.
