My experience was vastly different than the majority of other Yelpers. I was greeted upon entry, engaged in fabulous conversation with the artist and gentleman who owns the gallery, and had a delightful experience. Excited to see several pieces of art from Laura O'Brien, an acquaintance of mine, and when I asked if I could snap a picture, he immediately said yes. Art is personal and I'm searching for a large piece in certain colors with movement...I know...this means something only to me, which is the point. So while I was empressed with several pieces, there wasn't anything there that day that would work in my space but I'll definitely stop back in whenever I'm in Cannon Beach. We purchased a Christopher Burkett image from the gallery during a Thanksgiving trip to Cannon Beach. We were required to put 50% down on purchase, and write a check for the remainder upon delivery. Bob delivered the image about 1 month later, without hanging hardware or documents verifying the authenticity of the image. We discovered that our credit card had been charged for the remainder of the cost before delivery. Bob agreed to send paperwork the following week. Fast forward one month, no one answering at the gallery or responding to email. We found that we had Bobs personal phone number from delivery, called him and heard a lot of excuses (agreed to drop documentation the mail tomorrow). One week later, no documentation or communication. We're looking into how to cancel the transaction. Contacted Cannon beach chamber of commerce and got 'good luck' (no help). Think twice before investing in these cannon beach proprietors. read more

As I viewed the photographs and asked for detail on the technique used by the photographer, I was verbally attacked by both people minding the gallery. I felt like a wolf spider had jumped out of the corner desk and attacked me. When I tried to apologize for any imagined offense, neither stopped to listen but escalated their attacks and chased my entire party out and were told to never return because "I never forget a face." This experience was startling and upsetting. I am not Asian, so I don't feel race was an issue. They simply act like deranged people. read more

I bought my first sculpture here. I had stopped into this gallery many times over the years. The last time my heart stopped when I walked in and was bewitched by a beautiful bronze by Ann Fleming. The owner was so fun to talk to. It was a slow day there so I did have her attention and an obvious sale. However she has always been personable each time I've been in. read more

There seems to be a recurrent theme about the owner being rude to customers. I encourage all potential patrons, and artists seeking to have their work featured, to look elsewhere. My best friend's mother purchased a mug from this gallery and noticed after about a week of use, that the paint and glaze were chipping off into her coffee. She courteously contacted the gallery and was instructed to return the mug in person. Upon doing so, my best friend's mother was promptly accused of being a "nasty woman," and kicked out with threats of being "banned from Cannon Beach." This is a hostile, unsafe, and anti-Asian establishment. read more

Visitor beware. My experience was this gallery is extremely unfriendly. More than just cold I experienced them as actively anti visitor to their gallery. Before I pulled out my wallet I found it necessary to double check their selling statements. Oh dear no, life is too short. So many friendly and lovely galleries in Cannon Beach. read more

My wife and I had a great experience here in May. Very surprised to see some people's view is the exact opposite, the husband and wife owners both took the time to explain and give info on the art we were looking at. Never once heard or saw anything with other people also in the gallery. Amazing photos by local Christopher Burkett have to be seen in person to be believed!! read more

A few minutes after entering, I asked the man why he had a room cordoned off. He explained something about controlling his space. Upon letting us in he said "I hope that doesn't offend you". Before I could say "no problem", he added "but I don't care." Jerk. read more

I took a photo inside this gallery and was quickly and soundly rebuked because of "copyright for the artists". I quickly apologized and explained that I am friends with that particular artist and had no intention of infringing on my own friend's copyright. You would think that would appease them, but instead (likely because she thought "ohhh, friends with artist, not going to buy") I was met with further disapproval and admonishments. Both the man and the woman (owners, I presume) were down my throat over the issue and they completely 'dismissed' me from that point as a non-enity. I had come through the door all happy and left feeling swatted like an annoying bug! Tell me, how do they know that I didn't have a couple of grand in my pocket to drop at their gallery? How did they know that I wasn't wanting to email that photo to my business partner to check to see if he liked it for purchase? I have since checked on the issue of taking photos of contemporary work in galleries and learned that it is indeed frowned upon. Apparently, I should have asked first, but really, who knows that? I did not. (Why not put up a sign that says no photography?) I learned a lesson, but believe me, I will NOT return to this gallery. I may have been 'wrong', but those two are a couple of uppity jerks. They have a 'better-than-you' attitude. I can find art by their same artists elsewhere....and I will. This business is listed, for some reason, under two different names (perhaps they changed gallery names). After posting my review to the other name (North by Northwest), I realized the correct name for the business is this one...so I am posting my review to both names. As it is there are only four reviews on the other listing and mine seems to be the first under this name. Way to scare off customers...bravo! I saw a previous review (which is under the other business name) talking about photography as well and their comment was how did the woman know that they were not someone loaded who wanted to buy a ridiculous amount of art. Well, I am not loaded...however, I do buy art and was going to make a purchase at this gallery. I had never been to this gallery before this weekend. I visit art galleries and frequently take photos of art and the tags so I can research artists. I post photos with the artist name, gallery name and also info about them I find - I have even had friends who wanted to go to that gallery to get pieces from artists based on my posts. I have a lot of friends who are artists and I promote them as well. As a fellow artist, I also love looking up different painting techniques etc out of curiosity and admiration. My favorites are pottery, paint, and sculpture. Most of the artwork I own is from a few galleries in Cannon Beach and I have never given photography at galleries a second thought. All the other galleries are amazingly friendly. The gallery I visited right before this one I was joking with the lady helping us because I took photos of half the gallery in between my purchases of this gorgeous raku piece, an amazing print and cards. She was encouraging me to take a photo of this rare piece they had in their back area by a favorite local artist of mine and was encouraging me to take pictures of everything and making sure I had artist cards with as much info as possible - we made plans to come back in June for their outdoor festival to meet some of the artists we own works from and will probably add more to my collection. With that said, I walked into this gallery and after looking around with my husband, I see this gorgeous glass bowl. So I took a photo of it on the table with my cell phone as it was presented which is my tradition when I plan to make a purchase ...and then I started to snap a photo of the artist name to make sure I have it - usually the gallery has an artist statement they include but for art glass it is harder to store with the item. Plus then I have a picture of the original tag with the name of the piece on it. With pottery I store it inside and with a painting I always have my framer include it mounted to the back of the piece protected for me. So, as I snap the photo, I hear behind me the woman behind the counter start lecturing me about taking photos and how it is illegal is Oregon and copyright infringement and on and on and on and on...pretty much chasing me out of their gallery. I get it...I do...especially after she tells me this story about someone she heard of whose jewelry business was put under by some Chinese company reproducing her work for cheap or something like that. And then tells me about someone trying to capture every detail about an art piece. And not to be a bitch...BUT seriously...it does suck people reproduce works like that but you might want to hang signs and telling me or assuming what I will be doing with a crappy camera phone photo. Apparently this gallery must not post photos of any piece of artwork in their gallery online to promote their artists? If I buy something here and post it to the internet to show off an amazing piece I purchased with the artist name I might have the gallery owner show up at my house to arrest me? Well, I deleted the photos since most artists are just at their chosen gallery and I will not step foot in here again - and I really wanted that gorgeous bowl. I doubt the woman even realized I was about to buy the bowl. I honestly was so taken aback by her hostility that I just said I take photos of artist names so I can research them and we left fast - I want a pleasant experience when I purchase art and I love my memories of each each I collect - not a lecture by some boring person leaving a bad taste with it. I am sure they get plenty of people who buy things there - I think they have been there a long time and they are right next to the only spa in Cannon Beach so they probably get a lot of exposure that way. Right after leaving this gallery I discovered another favorite gallery is closed after the owner decided to retire so the rest of my art budget was spent on home goods at Sesame and Lilies... Woman was rude. Went in with my mask on. It was fogging my eyeglasses so I was adjusting it. I was rudely asked to leave. She stated that it was not her job to monitor masks. Art there has been there forever. Not selling because they are rude! read more

Most arrogant, rude and obnoxious owner ever. We were closely observing/admiring a beautiful bronze piece for the intricate design when the owner came flying out from behind the counter YELLING at us to not get so close and to back away, over and over. I thought at first he was yelling at the family with children behind us. Thoroughly unprofessional. Our hands were at our sides and we had no intentions of touching. Just admiring. We left and will never be back here even though there were some beautiful items on display. Visit the other galleries people because they were friendly and welcoming. Poisonous place here. read more

I could hardly believe my eyes when I did not see this gallery on Yelp! I have been staying at Cannon Beach and nearby Tolovana for thirty years and have seen it grow into the mecca of artists on the coast. North by Northwest is the center of all art that is good and wonderful in this area. I adore Georgia Gerber's wildlife bronze sculptures (she has some in the downtown Portland), Lillian Pitt a famous NW Native American artist and I am a fairly new crazed fan of Christopher Burkett photography...I walked in and there was art work from all three of them in one place! If you are searching for art, excellent art in a variety of mediums, mortgage your house and head to North by Northwest. You won't be sorry. read more

Every time I go to Cannon Beach I visit the many Art Galleries before going down to the beach. The Gallery that stands out to me the most often is the Northwest by Northwest Gallery. It has a nice mixture of photography, bronze sculpture, glass art, paintings and ceramic art, all high quality. Some of the artists are at the top of their field Nationally while others are highly respected Regionally. The prices range from affordable to higher for Collectors. There is something worthwhile there for everyone. read more

Came in with my 8 year who loves art. Did not get greeted or asked if we needed assistance. The group behind us was immediately greeted but scolded for mentioning something that was not correct in regards to the material used in one of the pieces. May have purchased an item but decided to retreat when treated poorly. Tad bit prestigious for my taste. Kindness pays- clearly this place needs a lesson regarding just that! read more

Copying my post from the other listing for this gallery too: We recently visited Canon Beach for our anniversary and decided a great piece of art would be an awesome gift for our many years together. We visited every gallery in town having a very pleasant experience, that is until we entered North By Northwest. I casually asked if they were connected to the gallery next door because I saw a work that appeared to take a similar approach to the subject matter. Boy was that a mistake. I felt like I was suddenly transported into an episode of Portlandia as I was thoroughly and dramatically chewed out. The level of drama was actually comical. The woman at one point said "I'm going to go outside and bang my head on the concrete for ten minutes!" The man repeatedly told me as he followed me around the gallery how offensive I had been. OK, maybe I have a lot to learn about shopping for art, but why wouldn't these sellers have seen this as an opportunity to teach me about the art and artists they were exhibiting? They could have helped make me a loyal patron for many years to come. Despite their rudeness, we stuck it out in their gallery for a few minutes because we really were interested in buying a beautiful original piece. It was only when they realized we were serious purchasers that they started to apologize for their rudeness, which just totally soured us. So we took our thousands and spent it at another gallery. I'm writing this in the hopes that the artist's represented in this gallery will read this. In my humble, unsophisticated opinion, great artists should not be represented by people like this. read more

My wife and I have been regular visitors to Cannon Beach and always stop in at NWbyNW Gallery. They are distinguished by the fact that they represent a limited number of artists who are established professionals. In recent years they have added several excellent artists, a move made possible by their new space that probably triples or even quadruples their original gallery space. We have roamed the entire coast and feel certain that no other gallery offers this level of quality throughout. They have carefully avoided trying to have something for everyone - there is no kitsch here. They are located in a charming coastal town but could as well be in any city in the country. We love the variety and quality of work shown. If you are in Cannon Beach this is a must visit gallery. read more
