She was denied a refund, being told the work was (nearly) complete. With this extreme delay and lack of care shown, my friend had little confidence or trust in his work going forward. I'm confused as to why any attorney would not consider it a priority to complete a living trust for their 77 yr old client? Why commit to the work, then not deliver in a timely manner? Below is an excerpt from the closing letter. Oregon State Bar State Professional Responsibility Board Case No. 24-253 - William Hugh Sherlock, June 30, 2026 Dear Mr. Sherlock: The State Professional Responsibility Board considered the above-referenced matter and directed me to advise you of its opinion that your conduct did not comply with the Oregon Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC), specifically RPC 1.4(a) [duty to keep a client reasonably informed about the status of a matter and promptly comply with reasonable requests for information], and RPC 1.4(b) [duty to explain a matter to the extent reasonably necessary to permit the client to make informed decisions regarding the representation]. During your representation of Mr. J, a supplemental judgment for costs was entered against him, naming him and his wife as debtors. You were served with the judgment, but did not transmit a copy to Mr. J or tell him about it. He did not learn about the judgment until almost four months later when a title company informed him about it during a property transaction. Entry of a judgment against a client is the kind of information that needs to be promptly shared with the client to keep the client reasonably informed about the status of a matter and permit the client to make informed decisions about the representation. Further, in many situations such as this one, the lawyer has the responsibility to initiate communication with his client, even if the client has not asked for a status update. In re Graeff, 368 Or 18, 25, 485 P3d258 (2021); (citing In re Groom, 350 Or 113, 124, 249 P3d 976 (2011)).
