There is plenty of parking upon entering and a dog park right near the parking lot There is an animal barn, a tobacco museum, picnic areas, a community garden, a maple sugar house, a nature center, a soccer field and 12 miles worth of hiking trails!! Northwest Park is a beautiful park located in the Town of Windsor. It is 473 acres and it used to be a tobacco farm. It's located right on the Farmington River. There are forests, wetlands, fields, and 12 miles of trails. There is a nature center, farm animals, tobacco museum, gardens, playground, and picnic pavilions. The tobacco museum is only opened seasonally. The parking lot was on gravel but there were plenty of spots available when I went; there is a porta potty in the lot as well. You can find restrooms at the nature Center too. Once you walk into the park, there is a viewing platform overlooking a small pond. The pond had goldfishes in it! First we went to the animal barn. There were turkeys, goats, ducks, donkey, chickens, cows, and rabbits. Next door to the barn was the maple sugar house; I don't think it was open when we went. We went into the nature center which was very nice. There were many exhibits, taxidermied local animals, a fish tank, hissing cockroaches, frogs, snake, a gift shop, a turtle pond, a tree house, and a table with puzzles and blocks for the kids. There was a clean bathroom onsite and the attendant working in the nature center was very friendly. The playground was also very nice. There were two playscapes for the different age groups. There were a couple of benches and the large picnic pavilions were nearby. They had a couple of gardens as well; one was an organic garden and the other was a butterfly garden, which was accessible. They had informational signs with braille on it. There are quite a few trails on the property. We walked over to the reservoir and Farmington River; the trails were easy and quiet. You can find the map online and in the Nature Center. There are also soccer fields and a dog park. Seriously, you won't be bored at this place. It's nicely maintained and the people of Windsor are lucky to have this park! I'm looking forward to going back! read more

This winter my husband is making me go hiking each weekend (wx permitting) so that we don't spend the season cooped up in the house. I do require a winery visit afterwards, however. Stay tuned for winery reviews! One winter Sunday we decided on Northwest Park. Quite a nice, approximately 5 mile loop that was very well marked. Set off into the woods behind the nature building on a trail that took us down and by the Rainbow reservoir. Pretty easy trail as well. Ended up by the critter barn that had goats, ducks, turkeys, sheep and Cisco the donkey that runs the show. There is also a very easy pathway past the barn that would probably be fun for a family with little ones. read more

This spot is cute! I initially thought I was just taking my girls to an area with trails; but turns out it's a small farm as well. What a nice outing for the girls after being cooped in my Aunts place with nowhere to walk in the neighborhood. We weren't able to venture in any of the buildings on account of me not bringing masks for my girls. We walked over a bridge across a small pond, onto a grassy area and immediately noticed a few chicks. As we were about to leave, we this HUGE white turkey came out making gobbling noises. Never seen a turkey in person. I wonder if they'd going to eat it... anyway, a smaller turkey cake out. We walked some more and saw a couple goats. A lady was there trying to get them to come over to us. Fun fact: I didn't know goat poop was called goat berries and that it's better fertilizer for the ground. We walked over to the cows and what we thought were horse but are actually mules. We would have walked some more but lunch time! I may take the girls back a little earlier. Great place for them to socially distance and run off some energy before bedtime. read more

This is bizarre, and I'm embarrassed to admit it, but here we go. I've worked in Windsor since 2007. I thought I'd pretty much seen every corner of the town- with many reviews of restaurants, services, and monuments. But somehow I missed stumbling upon this 473 acre park until I saw someone review it on Yelp. It has nature trails, country roads an animal barn, a nature center, gardens, a tobacco museum, places to picnic, trail markers in braille trail, educational programs, a gift shop, and a seasonal maple sugar house. I checked it out today and it was pretty crowded with cars all over and lots of activity. Who knew? I sure didn't! read more

I think it's a real shame I hadn't visited this place sooner. It's like a sanctuary of nature and quiet in the middle of Windsor. The park has a number of walking trails, going through woods and past some really neat old tobacco sheds and farm buildings. There's also a nature center, animal barn, playgrounds, and other attractions. Very cool place and a great way to spend a nice day. read more

A great place! Was fortunate enough to learn of this great park through a hiking meetup and have returned many times on my own since. This park has a variety of easy to moderate hiking trails. You can definitely visit over and over again and continue to mix them up. My favorite is the Rainbow Reservoir trail. There are barnyard animals, beautiful gardens, educational features, a braille walking trail for the blind, a bog, etc. Felt safe walking with or without a friend here. This place is GREAT! The fact that this huge park is available in Windsor, CT is amazing. They have a handful of walking trails (some longer than others). They have a barn area with goats, sheep, chickens, etc. The nature center has small exhibits to learn about the wildlife in the area. They make their own maple syrup here and have pancake breakfasts (you really can't go wrong with fresh maple syrup). They also have soccer fields that host a wide range of tournaments during the season. Lastly, they have summer camps. I was raised in these summer camps and have fond memories of them. Even though I'm an adult now, I am always returning to walk the trails at NWP with my dog. It's a must-do when I'm home visiting my parents. I love this place :) read more

I've loved this park since I was a kid. Nature center, pavilions, playground, barn with animals, pond full of goldfish and turtles, long trails both in and out of the woods. You can make a short trek or an all day experience here. If you're interested in the dog park, however, I'd go elsewhere. Not much upkeep. read more

I visited here on a chilly winter day between Christmas and New Year's with my family. None of the buildings/activities were open, but we still had a great time! My nephew, who is almost 2 years old had a blast running around the park and meeting all the animals. Our favorite was Strawberry the cow, who came over to the edge of the fence to say hello and moo'd loud enough for the whole world to hear! The park was clean, and well taken care of. There was a bridge that went over a little pond which was filled with goldfish, which was also a hit of the day. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Great park for hikers or those who are just looking to enjoy spending some time outside. The trails aren't difficult but there is something about them that makes them feel more secluded than other parks which I enjoy. Big open fields with people and dogs alike playing. Close to the reservoir if you want to let your dogs take a swim. Barns to check out some of the farm animals. There's even a dog park across the street! read more

Winter, spring, summer, fall is the best time to visit Northwest Park. One of the reason my choose our house we bought was because of the park. It is kid and family friendly. This park, situated in Windsor, is very beautiful. There are many hiking trails to enjoy year around with a cross country ski warming shed. There are Barnes to feed and see typical agrarian animals, and at the playground to let the children run around while you enjoy the beautiful scenery. Visiting Northwest Park is a staple in my childhood and is still routine when I return back to my hometown from living in the city. The trails range from small walks to long hikes. It is so wonderfully silent, a perfect nature resort if your craving the sounds of birds, bugs, and the wind catching the trees and grass. Such an amazing find! My boyfriend and I grew up only 20min from here but we didn't discover it until we moved to Windsor! It is our favorite outdoor place to take our dogs and enjoy a day off! Easy walking trails but lots of trails to choose from so it feels different every time we go! We love the farm that is on the property too!
