I recently sailed on the NCL Epic on a 12-night Mediterranean cruise from Rome to Lisbon, and as a Platinum NCL member, this was my least favorite NCL ship so far. The reviews you read are true this was NCL's first "big" ship, and they experimented with design choices that just don't work, even today. The biggest issue is the cabin layout. The bathroom is split into three separate sections, with the sink actually inside the main room, and water ended up everywhere. It felt like it was designed to be trendy rather than practical. The ship is also way too crowded for my liking. Because of the poor layout, there were lines for almost everything: dinner at Manhattan Room or Taste, entry into shows, getting on or off the ship, and even the buffet, which was crowded at all hours even on port days. Service was fine overall nothing special, though a few staff members did go above and beyond. I really liked the staff at the Mandera Spa! They were very friendly. The itinerary itself was incredible (Rome, Seville, Granada, Barcelona, and Morocco), and that was the highlight of the trip. Overall, I wouldn't sail on the Epic again and will stick to the smaller NCL ships moving forward. read more

This was our second time on the Norwegian Epic. The first time was 10 years ago during a trip to Barcelona. It was a 3-Day Mediterranean cruise with port stops in Marseille & Palma de Mallorca. We stayed in what is now called a Club Balcony room. My mother had her own room of the same type on Deck 11 that was 2 doors down from us. We absolutely loved it! It was so memorable that we decided to book a round-trip 6-day cruise on the very same ship. Only this time, it would start in the port of Civitavecchia. What we didn't know is that we would be among the first to sail her after being in drydock after a much needed revitalization. It ended up being an amazing trip! So, this time we splurged on a DOS (Stateroom #17007). It was our first time in the Haven, and we can't wait to go back. It was better than we imagined it to be. We loved the amazing wall of forward-facing windows with the large balcony on the side. There was a bottle of Veuve Clicquot waiting for us on sailaway. Snacks were delivered daily which included a tasty club sandwich after a long day of touring. We woke up to a sunrise view of Mt Vesuvius the day we arrived in Naples. The jetted shower panel in the master bathroom was a welcomed surprise with excellent water pressure. It's the little things in life that make me happy. My husband was super happy with the Nespresso machine, even though that French Press coffee at the Haven Restaurant is hard to beat. Our team that made our stay so enjoyable are Roel (Concierge), Chris (Assistant Concierge), Rufino (Butler), and Christian (Steward). They all made sure we had an amazing time in the Haven. Honestly, I wish I could name everyone. They all made it a very comfortable and memorable stay. As for the Haven Restaurant, it was simply amazing in every way. So much so, that I'm not even sure how I will be able to stay on any other ship without one. Seriously!!! The chef, management, and staff deserve the highest praise. I'm still thinking about each and every meal onboard. We did have 3 specialty restaurants booked, but ended up canceling one so that we could enjoy the Haven Restaurant on the last night before debarkation. It was that good. The service was excellent at Le Bistro as well. The food was good, but not as good as I remembered it to be. The menus have changed over the years. Le Bistro used to have a delicious bouillabaisse. My mother and I had it 10 years ago. It's no longer on the menu. The same with the Crème Brûlée. It's no longer there. We still enjoyed everything that we ordered. What was cool is that the concierge staff assisted us in reserving the very same table that we sat in 10 years ago. I remember how much Mom loved the view from the window as we were leaving Barcelona. We intentionally booked it on the same ship, port, and restaurant. What we didn't know is that our port day in Barcelona would be on Mother's Day. It was like Mom was there with us (in spirit) to make it all happen. Amazing! Overall, the Norwegian Epic gets 5 stars. NCL, what happened?? You definitely saved the worst for last on this one! Just returned from a 26-day cruise on the Epic, and what was a pretty good cruise ended with an absolute FIASCO at the Barcelona terminal. We were in line to disembark for no less than 1.5 hours...and then there was the line at Barcelona immigration, which was equally as long. After 3 hours, we finally got to an NCL bus where we got to wait for another hour to go to the airport. NCL was completely unprepared for the Spanish immigration process and unable to manage the crowd that needed to disembark. We have been cruising for years with NCL and have never had this problem, but I certainly wouldn't recommend their Spain embarkation or disembarkation itineraries because they are unable to accommodate the passengers there. And, as the "wasn't us" / "we couldn't help it" cruise line, I know NCL won't own any of this at all, but future cruisers should be aware of the mess that exists. It's also quite convenient how their entire staff disappears the second they tell you to disembark. There is literally no one to ask questions of, nothing. You are left to figure things out on your own as the staff frantically tries to flip the boat for the next cruise. Unimpressed on what should have been a dream cruise. Me and one of my besties did a 7 day Mediterranean cruise - from Barcelona, Naples, Civitavecchia, Livorno, Cannes and Mallorca- Sunday to Sunday No one tells you that this cruise has also people boarding/de-boarding in Rome. While I would not have a tiff with this- but it seems that someone gave our cabin to someone who boarded several days before. It was not a fun start of the cruise. After several rooms - we were pissed. But staff did accommodate with a clean room to our standards and also gave us $100 cruise credit which came in handy with onboard expenses. This cruise is definitely an expensive one. We got a balcony room. So worth it. Plus premium drink package and 3 nights of speciality dining which makes it fun. But it's very important to reserve your dining nights ahead of time or you may be left with few choices of you wait till you get to day of cruising. Now - excursions. With the exception of a day at sea at the beginning- you are basically at a new place every morning and each place is amazing. Now if you are like me and never been to any of these places before then you will probably want to book and amazing excursion. Pricey yes. But these places are amazing and to me it was worth it . Expensive excursions. Naples- we did the Capri , sorrento and Pompei tour. Actually it was in reverse order. Pompei was cool to see although limited time. We drove to sorrento which was scenic . Lunch in sorrento was eh. But then we took a boat to Capri and it was so lovely . Then took a boat back to Naples/ boat. It was a jammed packed day and worth the $300 bucks pp. Civitavecchia- the the port closet you Rome. Rome is about 45 mins away. You can do it on your own via train or can but you have to make sure you get back on time. We did a tour - the Ultimate Rome - another jammed packed day -and the most expensive- it was like $500 per person. But we got to go into the collesium which was amazing to me. We also did a walking tour to see trevi fountain , had lunch in front of the pantheon. Then it was off to the Vatican - to see the church and ofcourse the Sistine chapel. I'm glad I saw it but probably would not go back to the Vatican because it was so crowded and not pleasant for me. Another great thing about tours is that you can snooze on the ride back and feel secure that the boat won't leave without you. Livorno is the port for Piza and Florence. I believe piza is like 30 mins away and Florence is like 2 hrs away. We did the Florence and Piza on your own tour which basically only gave you rides to the places and you had a certain amount of time to explore but needed to be back in time to board the bus. It was a lot cheaper but more relaxed. Piza was a walk to get to from the bus and busy but it was really cool to see. Florence was also crowded but magical. Wish I had more time there . Also nice to snooze on the bus ok the way back. Cannes was the next port. Although I would have liked to spend time in Cannes because the beachfront looked awesome .... I had my heart set on seeing Monaco and Monte Carlo . Seeing where grace kelly was royalty and the cool Grand Prix course throughout the town of Monaco not to mention having a dirty martini like James Bond at Monte Carlo which is where Casino Royale was filmed. That was amazing. Monaco was so lovely. Mallorca was next. We didn't so any excursion because we just did 4 days back to back and we needed a beach day. We took a taxi which was super easy to a beach about 15mins away. The beach has food , drinks near the beach and comfortable chairs to Lay on ( you have to pay) . Taxi was easy to get back to boat as well. Barcelona was the end of the cruise . Ofcourse we ended up staying several days there which is recommended because Barcelona is absolutely amazing. So much to see. Also book your excursions ( on the boat) ahead of time - that way you won't spend precious time on the boat to plan your cruise. Having the specialty dining reservations , entertainment reservations and excursions set decreased the stress. You can also change them later if you need to. I did it through the Norweigan website . It's so easy . I also recommend to buy a water package . I love drinking bottled water and even with the premium drink package - there are no bottled water. Specialty restaurants- we did the French Bistro. I was disappointed- the place is right near the atrium which was so loud - my meal was not enjoyable. It was my first for French On Norweigan because other cruises were always packed. We also did teppanyaki for my friends bday which was fun- more because the chef was fun. And did Italian and surprisingly it was the best food on the ship! Our cabin waiter was the BEST! The nicest guy ever- I think he was from Bali. He even decorated the room for my friends bday- it was awesome.He did get a great tip from us! The crew overall was awesome. We literally had an EPIC time! A vacation to remember. read more

First timers on the NCL ship. We boarded the ship in Barcelona and our itinerary took us throughout parts of Italy, France, and Spain. The check-in process was pretty painless, faster than I had anticipated for the size of the boat. The ship itself was larger than the others I have been on (cruised Carnival Splendor and a Princess ship). The casino was pretty large which was a plus for my other half. They had both smoking and non-smoking casino areas which I never seen on a ship before. They had multiple swimming pools (some with slides), a rock climbing wall, a bowling alley (surcharge), cigar room, ice bar, spa, game room, stores to shop in and other activities. The food that was included in the fare was ok (you could tell that they made it for the masses) while the food you paid for was of higher grade. We ate at the brazilian steakhouse (surcharge) which was delish, Cagney Steakhouse (surcharge) which I thought was pretty mediocre for a steakhouse, the Teppanyaki restaurant (surcharge) which was comparable to Tanaka of Tokyo or Kobe steakhouse, and the French Bistro (surcharge) which was good. During the start of our cruise, I was a bit worried because the toilets didn't flush and it was only our first night. Luckily they got the toilets up and running in a few hours, but boy was that stressful thinking that you would be stuck on a ship with no plumbing at the very start of your cruise. They offered a variety of shows and activities, however I only played bingo (lost) and went to a dancing show, but fell asleep because we were still getting adjusted to the time difference. All in all, I would cruise again with NCL, but would probably try another mega ship just to see the differences. read more

My wife and I booked a cruise 3 months in advance and signed up for balcony guaranteed. We were given room 9283. 2 months prior to the cruise, we check the price and it went down approximately 300 dollars, but since everything was already paid for, we called our cruise consultant that told us they'll be able to help us out in case this happened. She also informed us that if it went down, she will know and contact us right away to give us a free upgrade. This wasn't the case at all. Booking the cruise with NCL was very stressful, especially since the price went and the cruise consultant didn't contact us. She actually told us to pay a little bit more for an upgrade. It was just annoying and I wont be sailing with NCL for a while. The cruise itself was very enjoyable, I left from Barcelona and went through different ports in Italy, France, and Spain. The staff and food were both amazing. The balcony room I had was 9283 was a true balcony and had not other balcony directly above it, so I could see straight above me into the sky. The issue with this was, there were 3 to 4 floors or balconies behind me and if they ate something or drank something, it feel onto my balcony floor. Can you imagine if I was just relaxing outside and something just fell directly on me? I would try another cruise line before giving NCL another shot. Coming to the port was easy, but leaving it, there was a long line of taxis and people. It took forever to leave the port. If you get a good price, give it a try. read more

Boarded and departed in Barcelona. First impression thought I was in An Atlantic City Casino. My first cruise and I'm not sure if I will cruise again. I didn't like having a time frame to rush back to be on the boat for departure. Had to be there 1/2 hour prior to departure which was between 6-7:00. They only guaranteed they would wait for you if it was one of their excursions running late. I felt very rushed the entire trip. We were a family of 6 in the haven Family suit with a second room. Ages 16-80. Very difficult to sleep 6 in the 2 bedroom family suite in the Haven. 2 in master bedroom, one on the sofa (doesn't pull out as we were told) and 3 in second bedroom. Second bedroom was tight, third bed came down from ceiling. No way do I recommend this for adults. However the Haven is a great place with its own pool area away from crazy town. The Haven has a private lounge with a restaurant for Haven guests serving all meals. Found the younger ones in our group preferred the main serve yourself dinning area because it had more options for them. In the Haven you have your own concierge and Butlers. Priority boarding and departure. Beautiful balcony with two seats to see all the ports and land we passed along the way. TIPS: buy internet before departure as it is cheaper, same as supplies for cabin like water. Book excursions if you choose to do ahead as several closed. don't feel pressured to do excursions. But alcohol package if you like more than 6 a day. Never leave ship without keycard and ID. Food was very good at all the complementary dinning areas. The gourmet food restaurants which is extra were great. We had a package of 3 and went to tepanaki, la cuccina and the steakhouse. Great gluten Free options, bread and they were very careful with food prep as I wasn't sick at all. Recommend if you are drinkers to get the alcohol package. Mixed drinks were close to $14 each. Never leave the ship without a photo ID and your ship ID/key card. That is your access on and off the ship. Also on your last day that is how you check out, your last swipe. Excursions are costly, some are very worth and others like Sorrentino and the Amalfi coast by land and sea stay clear. Bus ride is long and awful, everyone was sick. Want to see Amalfi go on your own or a private car. A taste of Tuscany and Pisa excursion was amazing. Pleasant bus ride to Pisa with a tour and free time then off to a fabulous meal and wine tour. We loved everything about this tour. Cannes France the boat can not pull into port so reserve your spot to be transported in by the life boats. Pleasant short ride in. We didn't do a tour we went into the port and got on a ferry to walk around the smaller of the two islands. One of the two islands making up Lérins - are Île Ste-Marguerite and Île St-Honorat. 20-minute boat ride of Cannes. Imes de Lérins is the smaller of the two and we have been told less touristy. An oases of peace and tranquillity, a world away from the hustle and bustle of the Riviera. Pack a picnic or enjoy food and wine from a cafe, the only one on the island. Hike through beautiful paths that lead to a historic castle, an Abbey, church, cafe and gift shop. The scenery is breathtaking. The flowers, wildlife and water views are spectacular. No flushing toilets, an open pit in the bathroom awaits those In need. Just remember to lean or you will wet your shoes! Majorca Spain we also did our own thing. Went to the Bellver castle then the Campino beach area. Beautiful day. In the port of Civitavecchia, we opted to not do Rome since we have already been. We did a cooking class and tour of the countryside. Found Aqua Ristorante under things to do in Civitavecchia, Italy. We took an Italy cruise and wanted to do something fun in this port. Excellent reviews on many sites and I contacted Federico thru his Facebook page, he quickly responded. Make your reservations prior to your trip or you won't get in. Federico and Fernando his driver picked us up at our port and drove us to his ristorante. Ten minute drive and we were ready to start. 6 members of our group from 15-80 years old. This by far was our favorite part of our trip. The Ristorante was a perfect setting for a cooking class and fantastic meal. We learned how to make homemade Bolognese sauce, gnocchi, eggplant parmigiana, tiramisu, veal saltimbocca. This was a hands on class not just a demonstration. Fabulous class. After we got to eat our meal and we were served farm wine which was delicious. Fernando and Federico took us on a wonderful countryside tour after this fabulous class. So worth it. Amazing day. Overall my experience with norwegian Cruise line was good. The room was nice, the food was good, the ports we stopped at were fantastic with a multitude of excursion options. The staff was friendly, helpful and accommodating. My issue is there's tons of fees and for the most part you are made aware of these before you even arrive, but aboard the ship there are many shopping options and there are tax free and duty free signs all over but you are still charged taxes. when we asked why we are being charged tax in a duty free store we were told we could request our taxes be returned to us by filling out a form if we spent over $150.00. This process was complicated and it seemed like no one really knew the answers to our questions. After finally receiving the required paperwork we were told we could collect our taxes at the airport, but manager says we will be refunded 19% yet we were charged 21% tax. They called the tax VAT (value added tax) and told us that the cities we stop in charge the tax. The paperwork states that there is a fee to collect your taxes....this fee is nearly 30% of your total taxes charged. Let me be clear I'm fine with paying taxes, I understand their purpose and in general I don't think twice about paying taxes. I do however have a problem with being told all my purchases will be tax free only to find out later that it is untrue. And for tax to be added onto my purchases regardless of signage posted all over the shopping areas stating Tax Free. I'm also quite frustrated at the fact that getting refunded money that never should have been charged in the first place is so difficult to get refunded and that they charge a ridiculously high fee to process the refund. I also found it unsettling that none of the employees we dealt with while getting this sorted out seemed to really know what they were talking about which leaves me to believe that most people are unaware and aren't getting their taxes refunded to them. I truly had a wonderful time but I think my future vacations will not be on a cruise. There are countless vacation options out there and I've never had to deal with anything like this in the past during a vacation. So, our first cruise. Ever. I'd give it an "ok". Good food, good staff, massive facility, great stateroom. Lots of activities. Crappy logistics for getting to the locations advertised, e.g., to get to Rome, we ported at Civitavecchia then took 2 buses, a train and a taxi. 2 hours later we we were in the Piazza Navone. And then we had to reverse it. Similar for each port. We elected not to get off the ship in Cannes due to high seas and 40mph winds. (The ship anchored and passengers were shuttled (tossed) in small tender boats. In addition, the cruise line did not vet the taxis that lined up in port. There were scammers and gypsy cars everywhere. I saw one couple quoted 500 euros for the ride to Rome. I mean c'mon! Thankfully we knew our way around and the correct prices to pay or got taxis with meters. The final disappointment was bad weather making the ship 3 hours late for the final stop in Palma Mallorca- the only city we had not been to previously in our travels. Since the captain decided it wouldn't be worth the stop for the remaining 2 hours, everyone lost their booked tours, scooter rentals, etc. And, of course the ship benefitted from all the extra drinking and gambling from the trapped captive audience of 4000 passengers. Can't blame the ship for weather issues of course, but from a customer delight viewpoint, they missed the mark in a big way. read more

Definitely a bare bones cruise line. Food was terrible, sometimes inedible. Normally I prefer eating in the dining room so we tried it out our first night and were extremely disappointed. Tried the buffet (which I usually do not like) and it wasn't any better. Paid for one of their "better" restaurants and the beef tenderloin tasted more like Salisbury Steak. I thought cruises were known for their good food???? I've been on a few other cruise lines and have had only positive things to say.... guess Norwegian didn't get the good food memo... or they are penny pinching to make more profit... Luckily we were on a weeklong Mediterranean cruise with stops almost every day so we ate on shore as much as possible... Customer service was horrible, no one could answer a question, the left hand had no idea what the right hand was doing. Most staff members acted like they did not want to be there, and the ship was dated and in no way memorable in appearance. Would have given a one star rating but 1) the entertainment on the ship was top notch, and 2) our Junior suite w/balcony stateroom was very nice. And the port/itinerary was awesome.... But the next time I cruise I will CERTAINLY NOT be on Norwegian..... read more

One of the best cruises I have taken in my life! Boarded the ship in Barcelona and visited Morocco and Canary Islands. We decided to spend a little more and get a Haven suite which was well worth the investment. First, you receive VIP treatment for every event you plan - you have a personal butler and concierge service that take very good care of your every need. Even though you are on a massive ship, the Haven area is secluded from the rest of the population with your own private restaurant that's never crowded, a sanctuary area to lay out with a pool and jacuzzi. It really is an experience within an experience. The suite is unbelievably roomy and can fit 4 to 6 family members comfortably. I did make good use of the jetted tub taking a relaxing bath while enjoying the ocean view in the privacy of your room - just that moment was worth the trip. Anything you want to do was there - I loved the shows (Cirques Dreams dinner show was my favorite), bowling, the Ice Bar, and the night clubs to name a few. I don't think my short review can do justice to an experience I never wanted to end but if you ever have the chance to do it the investment is worth the unforgettable memory. read more

My mom, brother and I stayed on this ship for a 7 day cruise through the Western Mediterranean starting at Barcelona through Norwegian Cruise Line. It was better than I even expected it to be. It starts in Barcelona, goes through Naples, Rome, Florence, Cannes, Palma Majorca and back to Barcelona. The ship itself---HUGE! If you're bored it's your fault! Rock climbing, bowling, the pool, water slide, multiple restaurants/ buffets/ bars, activities, etc., etc.... We got a room that had a little balcony and it was definitely worth it. I get seasick fairly easily and being able to see outside the room and breathe some fresh air was worth the extra money. The room was fairly big for a cruise ship room and the housekeeping staff was so friendly--they made us new "towel animals" every day and put them in cute places around the room, i.e. a monkey hanging from the ceiling, an elephant on the bed wearing sunglasses, etc. The shower is small, but it's to be expected-it's a cruise. The food---you could easily gain 10 pounds in a week if you fully indulged on a vacation like this. They had so many options and switched it up every day. Most of the lunch/ dinner food is catered toward carnivores, but no worries if you're a vegetarian, there are still options available. The activities/ excursions---SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM. Definitely go to Cinque Terre--it's so damn beautiful and no picture can compare to actually seeing it. It down-poured while we were there and it was still breathtaking. You don't particularly need a tour for Rome, it's honestly more fun to just wander around and take it all in, although beware, you won't get those postcard shots because it's swarming with people. The chaos makes it fun though. Pompeii and Vesuvius was interesting--you hear all the stories about the eruption but actually being there is a trip. Palma Majorca was gorgeous but damn cold. The beach was rocky and cold and you have to pay if you want to lay out in a decent area of the beach--don't go for the hours long tour, it's relatively boring. Obviously there are so many more, but a blow-by-blow account seems a bit much. Overall, this cruise is a trip of a lifetime. Bring a fully charged camera, your bathing suit and patience. There are moments on a cruise that can be tiring (emergency drills, waiting for excursion busses, disembarking, etc.) but it's all worth is in the end. Also, we decided to come a few days early and leave a few days after--you're already paying for the plane tickets, you might as well make the most of it. read more

We've done Norwegian before and we're very happy in the past. This cruise is a little different because I Europe people are boarding at all the ports. What stinks about that is there's no real welcome show...no goodbye show so you don't get that type of vibe for this cruise. While we really enjoyed the boat, customer service at guest services and shore excursion desk was lacking. One our excursions on the return to boat was a mess because our bus broke down and we were squeezed onto other buses. When I went to complain...I got a sorry and that was it!!!! At customer service there was a problem with our bill. I had to go down twice to fix it and I had to leave the boat without it resolved. We had a 4:30 pm flight and asked for a later shuttle because they were taking us to the airport at 7:30 am. They refused to help us and I found out when we left there were people who left later than us. We had to wait hours with my luggage because I couldn't even check in to my flight till 2:30pm so we were not happy sitting at an airport all that time with our luggage!!!! read more

Your pillows provided in the staterooms are without a doubt the best thing in the world. I literally was foregoing food, alcohol and excursions because of them. Nobody should have these in their home unless they are retired or unemployed because they will take priority over your entire life. PS the rest of the ship was cool too read more

I have cruised on Carnival and Royal Caribbean, this was our first time in NCL. We had a great time because it was s family and friends trip on a Mediterranean cruise. They almost charge you for breathing. Almost everything is extra. On a positive note, most of the cruise members are pleasant and helpful. There are a few with upset faces and out right rude! The food was excellent on the Manhattan room and the specialty restaurants except our last night in the Manhattan room was horrible. We were there for 21/2 hours. It took 45 minutes to get our appetizers, they confused all of our steak orders, and the service was horrible that night. We had been in the Manhattan room other nights. snd it had been excellent, unfortunately the last night on the ship, it was all a mess. The buffet was great for breakfast and lunch, we didn't really like it for dinner, definitely prefer the restaurants. The room was cleaned and done daily, and the housekeeping staff was very pleasant and helpful with anything we needed. The pillows and comforter were very comfortable and i wish i had them at home. If you enjoy alcoholic drinks, get the beverage package or you will be paying a lot of money! We did tours in all the ports except Palma Mallorca with Viator, not NCL and they were amazing. In general we had a great experience, i still think my favorite has been Royal Caribbean. We read more

Our ninth cruise but first Norwegian and first Mediterranean. We enjoyed it more than our past few cruises on Royal Caribbean. We were slightly disappointed by the specialty restaurants but food in other outlets was better than other cruise lines. Excursions are ridiculously expensive but I'm not sure if that is a Norwegian thing or because it was the Mediterranean. We will definitely cruise Norwegian again. read more

They are bigots and thieves. Beware of all of the hidden extra charges that they get you with, the internet doesn't' work even though you pay for it let alone the indifference of the management staff. Finally, they left my son and I at the port-departed at a different time then told and no one was there 10 minutes after departure. No help or even instructions. When I arrived in Barcelona and boarded the boat they had let my 16 year old daughter off the boat violating their policy and I spent hours in Barcelona trying to find her while she was looking for me. I think there are plenty of other cruises to choose from. Hope nothing goes wrong with yours like mine because they are callous. read more
