If Barry's Bootcamp and Tonehouse in NY had a baby, Midtown Studio would be it. Midtown Studio…read moreoffers 50 minute bootcamp style classes that incorporate a combination of interval running, strength training and functional exercises. It's similar to Barry's except the sets between exercises are shorter and you switch from the bench, floor and treadmill more frequently. I like that there's an open space/turf where you can do more exercises that utilizes open space that's separate from the bench. It definitely feels like an all over athletic conditioning class in that regard. The woodway curved treadmills are really cool in that it's entirely dynamic and driven by your resistance although there is a manual resistance knob to add on more weight. Once you get going on it, it can go really fast and feel intimidating but after the first class you get the hang of it! There's also these straps with handles attached to the treadmill that we didn't get to use but I assume they're used in more cable based exercises. The bench is stacked with different equipment, like dumbbells and kettlebells as well as battleropes and sandbags. Class size is about half of Barry's at full capacity (20-25?) The first time I took an "extreme abs" class with an instructor whose name I didn't catch. It was definitely one of those classes that went from 0 to 100 reaaal quick so if you're not as used to working out at that intensity I'd disclose it with the instructor. The second class was with Manu, the owner, and he was FANTASTIC!!! He was such an excellent coach and really tried to give attention to each individual (something you wouldn't see at Barry's). He gave clear instructions in both French and English and was extremely motivating. He's super friendly and runs a great studio! Classes aren't as frequent and tend to go more toward the later morning into the late evening. My friend and I purchased a 2/30 euro intro deal and it was well worth the money!! If you're interested in getting a sweat on in Paris or wanna make more room for crossaints, this is your place! There are showers and Rituals amenities to freshen up with after class.

Love the huge space and it is the place where you can totally forget about anything else, stressless, and ENJOY workout. There is AC, so you don't have to be struggled by the hot weather. The window view is nice, and you see many pretty people working out there with you is A+++. Love the steam room, sauna, lockers, group lessons, energy bar, and especially the spin class (with steam if you want more challenging to your exercise). They gave you two towels. I think this chain store is sponsored by Armani. You only see Armani advertising in the entire area which is fine with me. Feel even more high-end. :)) The cost is a bit pricy. One day pass is $50, but people, it gives you AC if you know what I mean. I was at CMG, I paid $35. If you get out of the gym, cannot come back anymore unless you pay another $35. It was a small place filled with lots of people. Not enough equipments, less selective of facilities. No AC, no view. I thought I was like a blue shrimp swimming in a hot pot getting cooked. There is a gym at Latin quarter where asks for a same amount of fee, much older than CMG, same quality, but it has a big swimming pool on the 2nd floor. I was at a health club yesterday on Champs Elysees near Marriott hotel and it at the same building where Starbucks is located. It is at the basement, asking for $40/day. Big place, so so equipments, no street view, I felt kind of gloomy and suffocated already and I haven't even started working out. So if you really want your workout in Paris feels like a treat, come to L'usine!!!

I recommend it to many of my…read moreex-pat friends and describe it as the closest thing to a North American club that you'll find in Paris; I would compare it to Equinox in the US, or the Adelaide Club in Toronto. Even though it is a little bit out of the way from where I live and work, it is worth the trek, and I get to walk by the Eiffel Tower each time, which is a nice bonus. I love a gym where I feel welcome and can spend hours there if I wanted to. When I enter to get my gym lock, I'm greeted by people who know me by name, and the same applies with other trainers throughout the session (all done in English, if you prefer). There is a nice café by the entrance where I'm comfortable sitting and having a drink with a colleague after a squash match or to wait for my wife to finish up in the changeroom. Of course there is wifi, and you can also watch whatever big soccer ("football") game is on as well on their big screen. I find it amusing that the bar doesn't serve protein drinks like a normal gym bar would but rather espressos, cappuccinos, wine and beer and some charcuterie, it is so Parisien it hurts. The gym equipment is pristine and all new. The machines are sophisticated and use some sort of bar code technology that allows you to track your progress, if you are into that kind of thing. The treadmills all have youtube, tv and ipod capabilities - which is key when you hate running as much as I do. While I thought it was odd that there was only one squat rack and one bench press respectively, I never seem to have to fight for them, owing I think to the fact that there doesn't seem to be a big lifting culture here in Paris (see above regarding gym café). This view is bolstered when you consider these two critical pieces are in entirely separate rooms at opposite ends of the facility, yet no one else seems to mind. The price is also very reasonable. While there is an initiation fee of about 200 euros, it comes with a few training sessions, and 15 credits for group classes or squash sessions. Yes, those are extra, and not included, usually averaging out to 10-16 euro each. The classes themselves are killer so definitely worth the money, especially bootcamp with Boris. Towels and water bottles are not included either, so you don't get all the conveniences of North American clubs. But it is more than you'll get anywhere else in Paris for 84 euro a month. Finally, if you are into squash, this is the place for you. Courts are well kept with glass backing. I understand there are only 3 real clubs you can play at, and I've been to one of the others (CMG Montparnasse) and it is no comparison. Courts are in huge demand and fill up quickly so you have to reserve at the desk or online, often filling up (5 courts in session) a few days in advance. If you want to check it out, reach out to Alex Kuntz, who handles the memberships, he is awesome to deal with.
