The paver walkway installation we received from NoVA Paving was done badly and will likely need to be replaced within a couple years. Unfortunately, this is the worst final product that we have experienced in our years of dealing with various home contractors. We hired NoVA Paving to replace our crumbling slate walkway with new pavers. We have undergone many home improvement projects over the years and have had mostly good experiences, but this was anything but. Instead of taking the proper time and effort to establish a deeper foundation, NoVA Paving used our existing, very shallow foundation. This left the pavers lifted from the adjacent driveway, sidewalk and grass. To keep it in place they placed slipshod concrete wherever it would have otherwise immediately crumbled. After the job, they told us that using the existing foundation "saved us money" and that we have no issue. As seen in pictures: * Multiple areas of pavers coming loose after the installation. * The entirety of some pavers are exposed with hollow spaces underneath. * Because they never established a proper foundation to even out the pavers with the sidewalk, they had to dump a slab of concrete where pavers should have been placed. The worst part was that they did not even tell us about the concrete until AFTER the job was completed. * Concrete securing the pavers in other areas has a terrible aesthetic. * We were charged $700 extra to haul away the old slate - which was not discussed beforehand or included in quote. When we told Mark about the problems, we got the run around for a month before they finally sent a foreman out to investigate. This was when we were told that there was nothing that could be done about the shallow foundation without a complete re-do of the entire job. We then asked for a partial refund and were told by Nova Paving to just take some dirt and put it up against the sides of the pavers, and that we did not have an issue. read more

These guys replaced my driveway last Winter, and large parts of it are already failing. I asked them to fix it under their 1-year warranty and they refused, citing "base failure" as something that is not covered under their warranty. My fault for not reviewing the warranty more carefully and making them remove base failure. But I warn anyone who does business with these guys that they are do not do high quality work, nor do they stand by their work. If you do decide to work with them, read their warranty very carefully. The warranty is filled with typos and contradictions; best to make sure you understand everything that is in the warranty if you decide to work with these guys, and don't let them put broad, non-descript exclusions in there such as "base failure". I posted some photos below of their shoddy work. This work was done less than 9 months ago. Even if you have to pay a bit more for another contractor, it is worth it based on my experience. The driveway looks excellent but the communication could have been better regarding final expectations. Your lawn will be destroyed and any money saved on asphalt will be spent on a landscaper. Know before going in that you'll have a mess to clean up. Before signing the contract I asked if debris would be removed. He said he would take care of it, so I signed. I was left with a major mess. When contacted he was responsive and said the debris had to stay there for stability. Lucky my neighbor likes me else she'd report me to the county. Five star driveway. Resealing is complete and our driveway looks like a million dollars! And as when they were resurfacing, the team was clear on what they offered on the warranty, next steps, and how to keep the drive way looking awesome. We want this to be one and done, so will be following with them for annual sealing to ensure this happens. What I really appreciated most was that the team offered to squeeze me in on a weekend to accommodate an urgent family issue that would have prevented resealing for a couple more months. Unfortunately I was left with no option but to take them to court and file a complaint with the License Board (DPOR). Fortunately I won a judgement in Prince William General District Court for a full refund and the Virginia DPOR issued a violation with a fine and remedial education requirement. I started wanting to resurface my concrete front steps and walkway. Mark Jones convinced me that pavers were a better option. Days after the install by Joel Jones and team, the pavers came loose. After 3 attempts over 4 months they were unable to stop the pavers from coming loose. They decided the pavers needed to be removed because they were unsafe. They have refused to provide a refund. NOVA Paving Industries is not only in breach of its contract but has the worst quality of workmanship that we have ever experienced. I will provide pictures, a copy of the contract, and emails showing the work requested and the inept responses I received from Joel Jones, the owner of the company. While his workers (Mark & Mark) attempted to complete the necessary work, they just were not skilled to do this work. I communicated constantly with Joel Jones, verbally and via email, only to be disappointed time after time. We would have fired this company early on, however, we were required to pay 50% of the contract amount of $12,500 upfront. He could not meet during the week, I offered to come in on a Saturday to meet and he could not commit to a time. Then I allowed him to send me a proposal and he did not add a fence replacement. He added the fence but did not complete the work. Then, he was supposed to replace both brick pillars and he fixed one (not replaced). I also was informed that he used A-1 sidewalk bricks instead of the bricks required to make pillars. Upon partial completion, we started receiving complaint emails that the pillar NOVA Paving Industries installed was crooked. A third-party contractor then came out and provided feedback on the project that the entire project (attached) needed to be removed and started over. Upon communicating the results (full disclosure) of the third-party report, Joel stated that he would not come back to the community to fix the pillar (see attached emails). We then hired Exterior Medics to remove everything and rebuild the area. It cost us an additional $400 for the contract and $5,000 for the fence that was included within the scope of work in the contract but never installed by NOVA Paving Industries. He then took several pictures showing the inside of the pillar indicating that the base work inside the pillar at the bottom was never addressed properly which is very concerning. These pillars appear to be unsafe. He expressed the need to redo all of your work. He is sending me a professional report and all of the pictures we have taken. I provided you with plenty of time to rectify the situation and you outright indicated: "I believe our time working together has past." This is a clear breach of the contract. I have all of my communications indicating the issues from the beginning. I have been straightforward through the entire process. Unfortunately I can't recommend Nova paving. They did a fine job on our small driveway but we were extremely unimpressed by the lack of professionalism. Mark was very dismissive and put off when we asked any questions about the paving and sealing jobs. After asking a few questions about the sealing his team did, he told us not to pay him. The point of our questions were not to get the service for free but to understand why some parts of the driveway didn't get the sealer. This is the first driveway paving for us, so we just need to understand. We communicated to Mark that we have had a check ready for him since the day the job was performed and that we would prefer to pay for services rendered. After a few emails he said he would come by to pick up payment, but Mark never showed. Last week we receive an email that we get no warranty on the driveway. I'm actually at a loss at the lack of professionalism. The check still sits on our kitchen counter UPDATE IN RESPONSE TO COMMENT: We expect to talk with this business owner to have our questions answered when we make payment and never stated we would tape a check to the door as he says in his reply. He never showed up at our house the week he said he would nor did his employee come to our door to collect payment the day the sealing was performed (which we were told would happen). We work from home at least 60% of the week. If we are home, we ALWAYS answer the door when someone knocks (we don't have a doorbell). He told us he would come by the week before we went on a 3 week vacation, but he did not show up. We NEVER said we would tape the check to the door. With outstanding questions, we expect for an in-person exchange for payment. For this business owner to insinuate that we are scam artists is insulting, especially since we paid for the paving job. The $250 payment in question is for the driveway sealing. Mark has not once picked up the phone to have a conversation with us. If he is truly interested in payment, he would schedule a specific day to pick up his payment vs leaving it to chance that we will be home. I would strongly encourage you to find another service provider. We have done a lot of work to our home with many different companies. Had a bad mix when the driveway was installed which has caused the driveway to crumble and break in certain areas, and a lot of bare stone still showing. They had kept telling me that they were going to come and seal the driveway, and that would fix the problem, however, after over 4 months of contacting them NUMEROUSE TIMES trying to get them to come out and fix the issue, I had decided to hire another company to come and sealcoat because the driveway had started to fall apart. Solid work and very fairly priced. Nice guys too. They resurfaced my entire driveway and extended it out to my free standing garbage. So far it looks really good. I like that Mark, a second generation owner, was honest and backs up all his work with a warranty. We spotted some small potential soft spots in the soil when they did the driveway install, and Mark made me feel comfortable that if it causes issues later on that he'd make sure to come out and repair any defects. Finding a reliable paving company is one thing; finding a reliable paving company who completes a job that can last longer than a few years is another. I naturally assumed that if/when you pay a few grand to have your driveway completely repaved that it should really last longer than it takes to push out another Star Wars Episode. When we moved into our house a few years ago, the previous owners had the driveway completely repaved a few months before we moved in. Right after we moved in, we noticed cracks appearing in the driveway. As the cracks grew, along with our children, the dips came quickly after...all within a few years. All indicators of a previous paving job poorly executed. We knew we needed to have our driveway redone (and so did our HOA), but we wanted to make sure that we did it right this time. We had seen our neighbors have their driveways done by various contractors, who drawn by the magnetism of our driveway cracks, also knocked down our doors to give us estimates. We watched as our neighbors started getting cracks in their newly paved driveways and uneven surfaces within a few months. But when we were finally ready to have our driveway done, we went with another company. Lucky for us, the other company NEVER SHOWED UP for the job.
