This place is the sweaty, ooey-gooey, sticky funk box. I used to live very close and go more often, and I'm still not that far, but I tend to move west more and need to remember the east. I don't know how old this place is, but it reminds me of how the East Village used to be when I remember coming to visit my NYU friends in the late 90's and Alphabet City was kind of risky. I've seen some dirty gritty funk here and I even heard Dave Byrne makes the occasional pop-in which is amazeballs. I'd like to be there when that happens. I loved this place. The door is hard to find but that is part of the fun. It feels like a speakeasy. It had more of the 80's NYC feel to it. The room is a nice size and I like that the bar is away from the stage. I hate hearing more of the drunks than the band. The room is oddly shaped so there is less room in front of the stage but it was fine. The sound system was very good. The drinks were amazing. The cocktails were all made with Sochu or Sake. I had their version of a Caprahinia with Sake. OMG, it was delicious and dangerous. We had a great time seeing "Southern Avenue" and will definitely be back. read more

Came on a Wednesday night for the forro band. Lovely place! It wasn't packed, so there was plenty of room for dancing. A lot of Brazilians and Brazilian-music lovers. I had never heard of this place but decided to meet up with some friends who wanted to go here. Upon walking in it felt very underground and sorta reminiscent of the clubs in the Blade movies. I finally felt like I had found a club that was exactly what I pictured NY music clubs to be like. I am not sure what the name of the band was but I do know that they were awesome and the girl singing (Portuguese I think?) was great and reminded me of Norah Jones. I had a really good time here and appreciated the fact that the crowd was hip but not pretentious. There is a back room that smelled funky but not smoky... but apparently you are allowed to smoke there judging by some of the reviews. Drinks were not cheap from what I remember but I am okay with that since the place rocks. I think this is my first 5 star bar/club review. I will definitely be back. Get ready to dance. read more

Good live music, although the space isn't that condusive to it...you end up jivin in places and ways you haven't imagined before. Or maybe that was just the booze. My big complaint about this place is that the doorman gave serious attitude. When we went to the ATM he told us 'eat your heart out' when we asked if he would remember us for re-entry...then when we came back he made us wait along with everyone else. Definitely not the all-star treatment that Tina Shull usually receives. Props to the back room, and if you can escape the bouncer's wrath, sneak out back to the outside patio for a beautiful view of a vacant lot. Score! read more

I cannot think of anything negative on a cold wintery night. Enter into an oasis of friendly people who love to dance, with incredible live music. The venue is not very conducive for live music performances. The're is a little lounge area in the back (back is right by the entrance), basically just some couches and chairs, the passageway to the stage is narrow like that of a regular bar. The stage is facing the opposite wall, instead of the venue, so once people crowd around it, it's impossible to see anything. The interior is ok, nothing special, a little grungy. The only redeeming thing is the music. The jazz was fantastic, worth $20 (jazz festival) we paid to get it. To be honest, I would have rather spent that amount to get into the Village V. Otherwise it's a $10 cover charge, I think it should be $5 for what it is. Verdict: won't be returning, at least not on weekends. Not impressed. read more

You want a place that has tons of music flowing though it, giant tennis ball chairs, DJs, an outdoor area and a record store in it. Nublu is your place. Chill at the bar or on a couch in the back while artists from all over throwdown. Love this place for its edgier vibe and the cute girls that work at the record store. read more

I am terribly sad that I don't live in NY so that I can go to Nublu every weekend. I had such a fun time here that I didn't want the night to end at 4am! The ambiance is a combination of underground club and house party. It's small and dark inside, but it felt comfortable. Even though it was crowded, I was surrounded by folks who didn't care if you accidentally bumped into them or stepped on their foot. Everyone was vibing with the music and you couldn't help, but move to the beat. Like I've read in other reviews, the music is the best part about Nublu as it is an amalgamation of house, jazz and bossa nova. The night I went there was a three piece jazz band with a really incredible bassist. Nublu soared past my expectations as I haven't found anything similar to it in Los Angeles. The next time I visit NY, I will definitely be back. read more

This place has quickly become one of my favorite spots in NYC. I've only been here 3 times, but each time the music has been awesome and the crowd has also been cool. I don't consider myself a reggae fan, but the band last night was some of the best live music i've heard in NYC in a long time. I've only been here on weekend nights, but i've had to pay a $10 cover each time (not sure if that's just a weekend thing). I would usually think of that as a bad thing, but i suppose the $10 is enough of a barrier of entry for the usual hipster trash in the area, keeping the place at just the right size crowd, i.e. minimal waiting for drinks. read more

My go-to spot for great live Latin music & dancing. The vibe is amazing every time I go here: it's one of the few places where everyone seems to be having the best time of their lives through and through. Get that big grin on your face and start shaking it, from the dance floor to the bar. Certainly helps that all the bands are awesome and play music that just makes you feel good. I'd really like to give this place a 4.5 because of the small, hot cramped space but it's no different than a raging loft party... Great bands, jazz and djs... I've danced my ass off every time I'm there... For you smokers, it's a pain they don't let you smoke out back because it can be a hassle working your way back in when it's busy up front...your only solution then is to dance off that craving! read more

Nublu is a nondescript, very-small, very dark music club. The drinks are expensive given the area and every time I've been there's a $5 cover, but its cool dammit, simple as that. This is where you want to go when you're trying to get off the beaten path. read more

Went to Nublu 62 Ave C. They had a great Jazz group playing live music. "Casino Grande"! Very fun and cool vibe. Venue should have a few more chairs and some tables. At 11 pm it turns into dance hall. Check out that band. Highly recommended! read more

I was looking to be somewhere different, and luckily, my friend who truly loves music, led me to Nublu. First time in a long time where I felt like the people there were there to experience the sounds--and very friendly too. $10 cover charge, but I didn't mind paying especially since the music that night was awesome (electronic). Good, hidden place to bring friends for new, eclectic live music. Very small, with horrible enclosed smoking room in the back. But once past, an outdoor deck space good for summer nights. Was brought there by a friend who knows people in the band Brazilian Girls. They were the house band for a while, and their style of electro-jazz-world music is NuBlu's speciality. I've danced here with random strangers, but having conversations is a little hard with the small space and large sound. Good times overall. read more

Went on Christmas for the James Brown Tribute (its been 3 years since he passed) and it was spectacular. The people in attendance were not the usual Nublu crowd of hipsters lost in the EV, they were people who wanted to get down. I ended up popping and locking with the teacher of my old popping dance class. He made me look rediculous but i've never had so much fun. The other times i've been to Nublu were for a group of brazilian girls singing some type of jazz. I usually get a seat in the back or wander the record store up front pretending to be way cooler than I am. read more

THE hole in the wall. When I arrived I feared my night was doomed for lame disaster but as soon as I stepped in I realized my naivete. The bands tend to be awesome (last night there was Italian hip hop) - super talented musicians - the crowd is low key but stylish, attractive and fun... the selection of alcohol is decent... and though it might get up to 100 degrees in there, it's definitely worth every drop of sweat. read more

I absolutely love this place! The bands are always great and different. My favorite is Hess Is More - never really seen anything like them. The crowd is pretty down to earth - not the usual hipsters and the vibe in much more laid back than the snooty places that you find in areas like the Meatpacking District. My friends and I like sitting on the couches at the back. The tennis balls are pretty fun to sit on too. There are always some people dancing but never too many. You basically can do whatever you want. When the band starts playing it gets a little more crowded and many people just sit on the floor. Oh - they have some really cool artwork on the wall. The place doesn't start bumpin till around 11 pm and the band usually starts playing at 1 am. They do have some earlier sets at around 9 pm I think though and I know that in the summer, they have an outdoor patio that closes at 10 pm. When the band isn't playing there is a DJ, who is always really good. The cover charge is $10 during weekends - I've never been during weekdays so I can't comment on that. They have a website which is pretty useful and tells you who's playing when. You can also sample some of the music of the bands that play there. Nublu is actually a record label. I believe you can buy their CD's there but they also sell them online. They never pick the phone up when you call but they always reply to email so definitely email them if you have any questions. read more

There's a secret after-hours feel to this Alphabet City hangout, where the entrance is marked only by a small blue light over the door. The artsy, eclectic crowd is refreshingly free of pretense. Keyboards, turntables and hanging jazz, rock and Latin record albums decorate the bar area, while lush trees rustle above the tiled tables and floor cushions in the tiny garden. The Doorman is on an ego trip & will try to charge you no matter if you know someone performing or not (he works on commission) The bartenders are socializing behind the bar-it took me several times to get her attention. i went for the artist performing, which was great, but will never be back again. PLace has gone waaaay downhill since it's peak about 10 years back, when you could see Brazilian one night and Balkan the next. Now, the music is bland, the crowd is bridge and tunnel, the kegs need cleaning and everytime I go in there there's some guy named DJ Turmix, gotta be the worst DJ in NYC.
