My roof had a leak at the water heater vent pipe flashing. Mark inspected the area and recommended the application of sealer under the composite shingles. If that did not work, then he said that the flashing might need to be replaced. He quoted me a very reasonable cost. Unfortunately, the leak continued after the sealer was applied. He arranged for a workman to replace the flashing before the next big storm. There is no more leakage. I offered to send in an additional check for the follow up repair. He indicated that it was covered in the initial quote. As long as Nushake roofing is still in business, I will never use anyone else. You will not get a lower re-roofing bid than NuShake! You should always get multiple bids, but I can save you some uncertainty and tell you, they're the cheapest in town. I noticed some of the previous bad reviews and I'm wondering if some personnel changes have occurred since then. The ladies I asked questions of in the office were super nice and helpful and Jose, who completed the estimate, was super informative and open to questions. They adorably give you a folder with absolutely all of the forms and info you need for a re-roof. When the team works, they are beasts! I suppose this could be off-putting to those not accustomed to having such work done on their home, but they are getting the job done & done quickly!!! I appreciated it! If you didn't already realize, having your roof removed and replaced is a HUGE, messy & LOUD undertaking by nature. I suggest not being home and let the professionals do the work. Side note regarding California Title 24 Cool Roof Compliance: You can save a little more money by opting out [see picture of CRCC form for what you can do in lieu*] and using less expensive standard shingles; something they didn't mention. Approximately 25 years ago we hired Nushake roofing to replace our wood shingle roof. I also asked them to add a whirlly bird vent. On the second day of work they accused me of taking plywood from their supplies. After they came up short on shingles they realized that the estimator had measured wrong. No apology though. Fast forward to September of 2023 I was putting reflective insulation in my attic. I was unable to locate the vent. I went up on the roof and removed the top. It was obvious the vent had been put in the wrong spot. Directly over our vaulted ceiling and unable to vent at all. Instead of fixing it they chose to cover it up figuring I would never notice. It took me 25 years and a lot of lost energy savings. I feel they should come put a nice vent in for no charge. They will not return email or calls. So much for their 50 year warranty or their integrity. I realize it was an employee who probably made the decision to hide it but the company should make it right. read more

My husband and I had a couple different estimates to get a new roof an gutters installed. Nu Shake was the last bid that we received. Cecil came out gave me a bid on the spot. I was happy with the price, his professionalism and the timeline to get the work done. This was 5/29 and he said the work would be complete by the end of the month, referring to June. I myself, made the decision that we were hiring NuShake and I gave a deposit. That evening we drove around and looked at the houses that had new roofs completed by NuShake, that they had provided me within their contract folder. That should have been our biggest indicator that maybe I had made a mistake hiring them without seeing their work. We were not impressed by the roofs on their list, sagging rooflines and shingles that were not laid out in a consistent pattern. Foolishly I felt like I was bound to the contract. Cecil had offered the 50 year shingle, would be an additional $2,000 if we decided to upgrade from 30 year. The 50 year was a lot more forgiving in appearance of quality and consistency, according to what we were seeing. We decided to go with the upgraded 50 year shingle. I contacted Cecil to notify him of the change and to let him know I'd be in the office to choose the shingle. A few weeks went by after being told I'd hear form the office regarding a scheduled start date. I contacted Cecil on 6/17 regarding some additional questions and to discuss the gutter color. He said dont worry qbout picking gutter color until the roof is installed so that you see the whole roof before deciding. He said I'd need to call the office and have them schedule time for him to come drop the actual metal gutter color samples off to me. I called the office 6/17 and spoke to Bertha and she couldn't schedule Cecil to drop off samples until 6/29. That was nearing the time the roof was scheduled to be started so I asked when the start date was. Bertha said she wasn't the person that dealt with scheduling but that it was unlikely going to be started by the end of June. I informed her that we had a planned vacation on 7/10 and I would like to narrow down the dates so that my Summer plans weren't being held up on behalf of not knowing when the work was going to be done. Bertha then offered that she could put a request to put a rush on the job. I was adamant that was not what I was asking for and that was not necessary, I just wanted an idea of a start date narrowed down. She said she would find out and get back with me. I received a message from Bertha later that day saying the roof was going to be started next Mon. 6/29. I still had questions about how the payments were to be made because of the change in shingles that had been made verbally but not on paper. I called and spoke to Heather on 6/27 and asked about what was expected financially by me on Monday when the first payment was due based on the change order. Heather couldn't say what financially was due but said she'd let Cecil know I called. The tear off crew shows 6/29 and started the job. Cecil came dropped off samples and cleared up any questions, didnt seem concerned about how the extra 2k was to be paid. I gave him a check that day for the amount on the contract scheduled and an additional $1,000. Cecil then referenced some message Heather left him that made him feel as though there was some big issues I was having, not sure how that message was conveyed but that caught me by surprise because I wasn't having any big issue, i was confused because of lack of communication to keep me informed and prepared to know what was expected of me financially. Tear off crew worked throughout the day and was able to complete the tear off and laid down all if the plywood. The crew started using their shovels to beat down nails into the beams before laying down the plywood, rather than using a hammer. We know this is not the proper way to make sure you have the plywood layer lay as level as possible so your roofing paper doesn't tear and leak. We also saw them spit inside the roof into insulation, not sure why not spit on the plywood but that's disrespectful and disgusting. They replaced some areas of the eaves that had dry rot. The boards that were replaced were not tightened up to one another, leaving gaps of unfinished lumbar seen from below as if they just rushed and weren't worried about making it right, even after my husband brought it to there attention that there were gaps seen from underneath, hence the roofers are above the eave and cannot see what we can from the ground. Next day inspection passed with one area just needing a little extra nailing. Wed. 7/1 roofers came out and installed the paper and shingles and completed roof. I had a few questions regarding some of the details but didn't want to come across as being nit picky. read more

Hi. I always try to leave fair reviews so I will start with a positive and say every person has been kind. We had our roof put on a few weeks after hiring this company so the speed is faster than I see in previous yelp reviews. We did like other reviewers have delay communication errors or days they said they would show up when they did not. Day 1 the inside crew damaged the inside of my house. They think due to the pressure on the roof the glass covering on my ceiling fan was broken but I think the hammering was so agressive that this is likely why. The crew came they were kind and did help me vaccuum up the glass. However it has not been replaced yet and I was told it would he before the job was complete. I am still getting tiny pieces of glass in my feet it was so broken even with vaccuums it is not fully coming up. My kids have to weae shoes at all times its more glass was broken to dust. My daughter just had toe surgery so its an extra worry. Then the crew who put up the roof did it so fast quality was lacking. They put it up in 24 hrs and it looks like a 24 hr job my neighbors roofs look so much better. You can see the caulking and nushake told me to fix it repainting would be needed. In less they repaint the whole house it will likely still look tacky. Also its 3 days after they did the job and they still have not cleaned up their mess and my HOH often issues notices for these things so I have concerns that will happen. What I can say is everyone is nice but the cosmetic appearance of my roof is important to me. If it is not to you and your okay with extra caulking it might be fine but even the building inspector who came by this am felt it did not look that great. Also when I hired NuShake I did share my hesitations due to the yelp review the salesman told me they were a scam so It trusted him but I want to assure you I am a real customer and this is a real review. Update the company did come by and offer to fix the gout issues they seem kind in wanting to make it right. Two days later they made all repairs and apologized for the white grout saying the roofers knew better than colored grout should have been used. They repainted the areas that stood out and did their best to fix it. read more

I received multiple bids on a new roof and decided on NuShake and glad I did. Roofs are a huge investment and you have to feel confident in the one you decide to do the work. I had 3 tears offs on existing roof, one on carport, wanted a skylight removed in carport and they replaced wood with matching existing wood in carport. Could not be happier with completed job. Cecil was amazing about returning my calls and responding to my concerns or requests and the roofers were wonderful to work with. Rain was a concern and they worked hard to complete job before rain. Hats off to one roofer in particular named Jose who listened to me daily and addressed each issue of concern. I was also adding gutters and they were completed in a few hours. We had gotten multiple quotes for re-roofing our home and Nushake not only seemed more professional, but was substantially cheaper than the competitor. Due to the project being scheduled during the winter, the rain pushed our scheduled date back a bit. My wife was pregnant at the time and I called the office about two weeks prior to our scheduled delivery date. After explaining our situation to the office staff, it seemed like they dropped everything to help us and make sure the project got done before our delivery. However, we got sent in for an emergency delivery a day or two before they were supposed to come out. Again, they did everything they could have to make sure the process was seamless, and we were left in peace in the hospital, and as much as they could when we returned home. Anytime in the future that we need to replace a roof or anytime someone asks us for recommendations, we will always refer people to Nushake. Roof is good. Price is great. Salesperson, Mario, is great. Dealing with the office and communication with them, is awful. Finding open roof access covers in bedrooms, and a locked bedroom door with clear signs of someone trying to break in, also not so great. I called to set up an estimate. Mario came out on time, did a thorough inspection, gave a great sales presentation, answered all my questions, and was very helpful. How great he was helped to sell me on the company. I called and let them know I wanted to go forward with the roof, and no one called me back for quite a few days. I wasn't too worried because I called right before a holiday weekend, and assumed the office must be closed. My salesperson from the company, Mario, called to ask if anyone had returned my call. He then got someone to call me back. Apparently, had he not checked, they just wouldn't have called me. First strike on their office's communication. They put on the roof as promised, and it looks great, though there are a few shingles that there are cuts hanging over the side. They took my first payment when I sent my contract, no problem. They didn't process my second payment the day they started as I expected they would because someone in the office was away on a cruise. When she returned, she called and was very pleasant, and they processed my second payment, no problem. The roof needed a form for inspection, and I was out of town for two weeks. I asked Mario and the office if I could email the form over. They said no problem. So I sent it over to both of them.A week passed and I heard nothing from them (again, while still out of town, but my roommate had filled me in that the roof looked great and they seemed done with it) and then I get a call from a different sales guy saying they can't inspect the roof without the form I sent them in e-mail. I contact the office by email while at work and got a terse email back saying they couldn't print the form, the signature was cut off, and it was too dark to read. Ok, if that's the case, why didn't anyone contact me when they tried to print the email so I could send it again?! So I go into the email and try printing it myself. It comes out clear and with signatures. I call the sales guy who needed the form back and let him know this. He was nice and said he really isn't a tech guy so he'd have someone in the office try to print again. Again, I hear nothing from them, so I contact to see if they were able to make it print. I also sent another email with the files as a PDF and instructions on how to print it. No response. So I call and ask if it worked. They say yes. Then I get an email saying they tried to print and it didn't work. Wait, what? So I email back again asking if it worked because the lady on the phone said it did. They say that yes it did work this time. Wow, communication fail. A BIG strike 2. So I get a call from a woman asking if I am aware there is a balance on my account and I still owe them my third payment. She sounds pretty huffy as if I am late paying them and holding out. Well, I put a credit card on file and figured they would call me once the inspection was done and charge my card since I was still out of town, and told them this. I didn't know if the inspection was done or not because no one contacted me, nor did I know that the payment was due, since it was not to be due until after inspection was passed. I told her I expected a call when the roof passed inspection (PS it hadn't yet) and they'd run the card. Her response was "Well we like to have consent to charge a card before we charge it." No. Really? I'm shocked. *dripping sarcasm* A huge strike 3 on their communication. I expect a company to have it's act together enough to let it's clients know when a payment is due and have the courtesy to ask for payment before calling with an accusation of late payment, especially before it's supposed to be due. This last call was the kicker of my irritation with this company's communication system. They need a system to track communication in client files. Flash forward to me returning from out of town, and my roommates saying access panels to the crawl space were open and dust and footprints in their rooms. I go to my room, which was locked, and found gouges on the door and frame where someone clearly tried to break in. The plus, nothing seemed to be missing, but the door needs to be salvaged or replaced and the frame repainted since it was all scraped. The inspection papers were hanging out front, so did it pass inspection or not? I called and spoke to a very nice office woman and let her know my last two concerns, the people rummaging in my house and the inspection, and she said she would call me back the next day about the inspection. She said a similar thing happened to her, but "I am not saying it was our guys." Two days later a call confirmed it passed. Would I recommend them? Only if you're home the whole time and have lots of free time to deal with them. read more

Much like the other reviewers I had some complaints about communication once the contract was signed and the retainer was paid. It created some hiccups for us. I have to give NuShake credit for fully rectifying everything, but it has to be mentioned just for other people who might be future customers. We do absolutely love our new roof and gutters. Our project included both roof and gutters. The sales guy was great and took the time explain everything to my dad. He initially came out to give an estimate for just gutters (which is what my dad asked for), but recognized that his roof was in really bad shape too. The quote was extremely reasonable, so we decided to go with them. Once everything was signed and the payment for the retainer was placed, the communication problems started. The initial part was our fault for not asking how soon the job could start before signing and paying.....but we were initially told we would be scheduled 7 weeks out......0_o~~. After the shock, some negotiations were made and we were able to get scheduled earlier. Please do not take negotiation as a guarantee that this might happen for you. Be smarter than we were and just ask. Overall, the administrative assistants/office staff made me feel ridiculous for calling in and asking questions. Other than when I was calling to make a payment, it was like...."you know what, hang on because I can't even believe you are asking this." One particular staffer (I learned to recognize her by her voice) had a LOT of difficulty fielding calls to the point where basic questions (and I mean basic like "what is your mailing address, telephone number, fax number and email address") required a hang-up and 30 minutes before a call back with a response of who I should speak with and either a transfer or a phone number to call. It speaks to a lack of training and/or willingness to help people. Personally, I feel like if you have roof OR gutters in your project, you'd be fine, but when it comes to roof AND gutters or any other combination of services NuShake provides, you might have some coordination issues. My best advice is to babysit your contract. You HAVE to be present on both the first AND last day of each segment of your project. Otherwise, mistakes can happen as each team seems to have a bit of disjunct communicating with the other. I won't get into specifics because NuShake was diligent enough to us as customers to get us taken care of in the end. Make sure you have a way of staying connected with your sales rep and all subsequent teams involved with your project. DO NOT be afraid to speak up if you have questions regardless of how you might feel people are treating you. read more

NuShake just finished installing a new roof on our home. NuShake had the lowest estimate, which is great, but also a slight a concern over "you get what you pay for", but my friend at work highly recommended them, so I went with NuShake. From the estimator, to the scheduler, to the workmen in the field, to the person collecting payments, everyone was very professional and very helpful. The quality of the work appears very good, and we just had our new roof tested in the lastest storms to hit the Bay Area, and things appers to be working great. My wife and I both walked the roof after they completed the work, and were impressed with the quality of the flashing along the edges of our chimney and skylights. From our eyes, it certainly appears our roof is water tight. The work was done with the proper permits, which was finaled the other day from the City, with no issues. NuShake determined our gutters did not need replacing, as they were still in very good working order. This says alot to me, as they easily could have "sold" the need for new gutters. Even though they did not replace them, they cleaned out the gutters and downspouts to ensure they were working properly. Roofing is a dirty job, and I did find about 10 small pieces of debris in my yard and bushes, like other people that posted reviews, but with a project this size, I did not think this was unacceptable. Overall, our yard was kept very clean and you could hardly tell they were there. No problem recommending NuShake to friends or neighbors looking for a quality, reasonably priced, roofing contractor. read more

Here's an update. I may even go up to 3.5 stars! After talking to that horrible receptionist, and then the nicer receptionist, I talked to Zach who got my roof repaired within a few hours of my call. Both he and the roofing guy he sent down were really nice and helpful and the roofer fixed up my leak around the rooftop HVAC. Apparently the original roofer hadn't put flashing (sp?) around it and that's why it was leaking (lame!). I still have the hole in my ceiling from the leak, but girding my loins to call them again, I was pleasantly surprised by a new receptionist named Sarah. She was effective, helpful, friendly, and now they'll be repairing my ceiling. I have to admit, I was part of the reason it's taken so long to get repaired as finding a plaster person is challenging! (I have lathe and plaster). Anywho, with a roof leak in the first place, about the highest I can give is 3 stars, but they are on the upswing in customer service. read more

I had my roof done by Nushake in February 2013. I've never had to purchase a new roof before so I didnt know what to expect. There estimate was the best I could find. Everyone that I talked to was very professional. The estimater guy was very patient with all my questions. When I called the front office they were very helpful. During the job there was some damage to my hot tub cover, shelf and window screen. It's always a possibility that things like this might happen so I wasn't upset that it did. What impressed me was that when I showed the supervisor a few days later what had happened he was very interested in making it right for me. I was ready for a battle but the supervisor did not give me one! The final cleanup could have been better. Roofing materials were left in my back yard and i had to call to have them picked up. There were random roof parts (nails, wood shake parts) in the garage and back yard. These are the only reasons I'm not giving them 5 stars. Cecil was the estimator who came to my house and gave me a complete packet with all the information from the inspection process with the city of Danville to everything else and detailed every step. They even offered several finance companies and gave us lots of options to choose from. They gave us a time frame of 5 days because they had to tear off an old wood shake roof and put plywood down before they could put on the new shingle roof. It only took them 3 1/2 days and the finished product looks absolutely beautiful. They even added four new vents for better insulation. All the workers from the tear off crew to the installation crew were polite and respectful. I give them my highest recommendation read more

Nu Shake put a new roof and gutters on my home and I had a few problems with them. They were messy. They stacked shingles in front of my garage door, so I couldn't open it. I had to pick up a lot of staples and nails etc every day after they left. They left wires hanging down , but they did come back and fix it. I have had a complaint with them for a few months now to fix the rock on my fireplace that is not the right color grout. I just decided to let it go. Then yesterday I had a plumber out for a hot water problem that I thought was just the faucet. Come to find out. Nu Shake did not put the vent back on my water heater and there was all kinds of wood/debris on top and in the vent. The plumber said that with that vent not on I could have just gone to sleep and not woke up. He said the only thing that saved me was my wash room doors. Also he said that wood debris could have started a fire. I asked the plumber if he was sure that was caused from the roofing and he said absolutely it was. I have texted the owner because I do not want to talk to Cecil any more. I have not heard back from the owner. I would never recommend Nu Shake!! read more

NuShake from Ripon, Ca started my re-roof the last week of June 2017. I also was purchasing only a few gutters(3-4) in an area of my house that for some reason did not have them. Guess what? The tear off crew tore off ALL my gutters...yes ALL of them. I wasn't purchasing all new gutters, just 3-4 gutters. Next, a two man crew came and started laying the boards down on the roof, and when they were done for the day, they left a big pile of scrap wood with other garbage in my driveway. I called and asked for it to be picked up, but no one came, and the trash stayed there ALL WEEKEND until I called AGAIN, and they finally came out several days later. Next thing we find out is that one of the workers MAJORLY mishandled my persimmons tree. It looks like he shoved a huge branch down without any regard to this fruit tree, and damaged a major branch that WAS full of persimmons. This SAME worker who broke a huge persimmons branch, also cut a wire on the house that controlled my sprinkler system. He did all of this and didn't say anything. I found out when I requested a different worker to finish my roof. I immediately contacted the manager Cecil, and he apologized but never offered any compensation for any of the damages/issues; The trash, the tree, the broken wires etc. Guess what? When the roof was finally completed they left trash AGAIN in front of my house near my sons bedroom window. It stayed there for 2 weeks before anyone picked it up, after numerous requests. Finally after texting back & forth with Cecil it seemed as though I would probably be getting all new gutters at no cost to make up for the damages & issues. I was happy and content to be made whole plus not have to pay for those few gutters after all. Guess what? I DIDN'T get the gutters at a discount or at 'no cost' or a courteousness for the damages or issues. Even though I was led to believe this from the Cecil the manager the entire time in vague text messages such as ' I agree' 'I approve' etc..when I mentioned not paying for the 3-4 gutters. Instead in the end I was sent a bill in the mail every 3 days to pay for those 3-4 gutters. Yes! Every couple a days there was a bill for those 3-4 gutters for $600.00. in my mail box. I feel misled by Cecil, but paid the $600.00 since I was under contract. So your probably wondering how the roof turned out? Well...the roof looked okay, except there was an obvious inconsistent line going left to right. Finally, I asked to have someone come look at the inconsistent line on my roof, and someone finally came out on August 14th. This person cut/trimmed the shingles in question. The line went away, but there are still a few odd looking shingles in that area where he trimmed. So, would I use or recommend NuShake? After making me pay $600.00 for those 3-4 gutters after the damages? NO!!!! Plus, my roof has flaws and I pray I have no leaks =(( read more

Nushake recently completed installing a new roof and downspouts and the whole process could not have gone any better! My rep Mark Littlefield and Nushakes bid was also substantially lower than the other 3 bids I received for the same shingles. The tear down and install of the new roof took only 3 days, a separate crew came out a week later to install the new gutters and leaf guards. No fuss, no mess, no headaches! Due to the roof leak there was damage to our ceiling. After nearly 3 months and multiple phone calls to Nushake someone finally came out to fix the ceiling. But he only completed half of it! When I called to see when they will be back to finish I was told "I don't know when he'll be back". I have never dealt with such an unprofessional company! read more

I would not recommended them to anyone- sad that a few of my neighbors asked me if they should contact then- I would have to tell NO... This is a long story - they have not completed the jobs- they started February 16th 2017- still uncompleted the touch up- wish I could post the photo on this- so you can see. First day they send crew- didn't do anything just chat on the roof and left the coffee front of drive way- manager e mail me that they are sending new crew next day. They tear down things the following day they completed (almost) the roof, but left over of the trash front of the house more than 4 days- my husband had to call them and complain and they came out and took care of it. The san joaquin county inspector made a few notes that needed to be touch up completed - THEY HAVE NOT COMPLETED IT- I am paying a lot of money to get this kind of services. Tear Off crew showed up when scheduled and did a great job. The first dry rot repair guys did an amazing job. The other work crews had no communication but did their job. The drain and gutter crew were awesome. Final cleanup left something to be desired. Overall the scheduling needed more oversight as there were some unnecessary delays. Instead of 3-5 business days, the reroofing took 2 weeks. However, the finished product is exactly what I wanted and looks great. read more

We had a great experience with NuShake from start to finish on a family home in Arnold that needed a new roof. The salesman, Mark, was responsive and professional, the crew was efficient and did a good job. They found some dry rot after pulling off the old roof and didn't re-roof right over it like another roofer we used on a different house...they replaced the wood and the carpentry looked great.
