This chocolate shop is overwhelming (in a good way) with how many different offerings they have. Tried some of their homemade fudge and chocolate truffles. Liked how many flavours there were, how both the chocolate and fudge weren't sickeningly sweet, and how the quality of everything was pretty good. Walked into this store and wasn't greeted by the rude heavy set employee standing there. She completely ignored us and literally rolled her eyes and expressed annoyance when I asked for ice cream service. I said never mind because a place like this doesn't deserve my business and got more attitude on my way out. This shop deserves ZERO stars. Save your money or go somewhere else. The spray-painted chocolates I had bought, as gifts, were oddly stale Super sucky. I had bought 3 boxes (which avg at $12-13 for a box of 6). Finding out from trying a few from my own box that it was stale was super embarrassing. I obviously wouldn't have gifted them out. Ask when the chocolates were made before ordering. It's a huge quality bummer when they say the chocolate is made in house too, as they clearly dont chuck the ones that have been sitting for a while. read more

If you looove gourmet chocolate, sweets, and gelato, Nutty Chocolatier might become your next fav spot in town! Definitely gotta stop by for a gelato (or ice cream - they sell these in the back) or individual chocolates whenever you visit The Beaches. The store is quite large and as soon as you enter the warm chocolate aroma hits you and you feel like Charlie Bucket. They sell gelato (small cup = $3.50, medium and large cup sizes also available) right at the front, but I noticed today that many of their flavors are fruit-based (are they actually sorbets?) rather than creamier, nutty varieties (pistachio, etc), which I prefer more. The color of the gelato choices also look questionable, to be honest - I was told that neon gelatos are a no-no. Better head across the street and east a few blocks to Ed's Real Scoop for a better scoop experience. Perfect place for gifts! Many pre-packaged chocolates. We bought father's day gifts here today - chocolates shaped like fishing supplies arranged in a fake fishing kit :) Lost 1 star for being kind of expensive. I've been coming here for years - at least 12. I've never had a problem. The sales staff have never fawned over me or been rude. Transactions are always easy, I love the variety and being able to stroll down the street and pick up some scones. Around Christmas I always buy a bunch of those "Celebration" rounds of chocolates and everyone goes BANANAs for them. I was passing the store the first day it opened , so I went in and introduced myself to the young sales lady . Told her I would be her best customer ! Most every day after that , my friend Dorothy and I would work out and then drop in for a couple pieces of chocolate before strolling the boardwalk . One Easter just after 911, my son and I decided to fly to Halifax to visit my sister so we bought 2 LARGE chocolate bunnies for her young daughters . When we got to the airport and started to go through security bells went off and red lights flashed and around 20 police surrounded us GUNS DRAWN . After a few minutes I remembered the owner telling me there were certificates for great prizes inside some of the bunnies . The Police X-rayed the bunnies and then let us go . I love how this store carries lots of British products, from Cadbury chocolates to Cream of Tomato soup from Marks and Spencers. Coming to this store is almost like stepping onto the set of Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory with knickknack treats, lunch boxes with the London Tower imprinted on it, tea-sets, and of course, shortbread biscuits from the highlands of Scotland. My mom loves coming here for their treats that are sugar-free (great for the diabetics) and I love coming here for their ice-cream (in the hot summer that is). The last time I popped into the store, I wanted to look at some gift baskets filled with English treats however they were quite pricey. I saw one for upwards of 100 and that was filled with cookies and jams...nothing special in my mind, but perhaps someone would pay a premium for Made in England? Walking around Queen Street on Sunday afternoon, we were tempted by the smell of cocoa. Nutty Chocolatier is a kids' fantasy - aisles of truffles and fudge counters on the right and traditional gummies, hard candy, and seasonal treats on the left. The selection is amazing. The lady at the counter offered us a sample of their bark and it was delicious! We decided on a chocolate-bar sized piece of milk chocolate bark and a 1/4 inch piece of peanut butter fudge. It cost $9 so prices are quite high. Be forewarned, you'll definitely be tempted and could spend hours in there! read more

You know that phrase "I feel like a kid in a candy store"? I believe it originated at the Nutty Chocolatier. Their molded chocolates come in all shapes and sizes for all occasions and fetishes. From chocolate handcuffs to chocolate golf clubs and chocolate First Aid kits, this place has it all - though admittedly, I think to myself who buys those? There are two things (maybe three - we'll see how my rambling goes) that bring me back to The Nutty Chocolatier: 1. British chocolate brands and British crisps Now with 0% wax unlike some of the U.S. brands. If you taste a U.K. Cadbury vs. a U.S. one, you will taste a HUGE difference. Also, if you're a fan of the REAL Turkish Delight (I'm not one but there are some), they have those complete with powdered sugar and all. As for the crisps (hey, lookee here! The only thing I have against this place is that it moved out of my neighbourhood. It used to be just around the corner on Queen Street West so it's be simple enough to dash around the corner for a quick fix of chocolaty goodness. Now I've got to hop on a Queen car and head east for quite a ways. Well, it now gives me an excuse to venture east of Parliament. The Nutty Chocolatier is a locally run Belgian chocolate-makers that specialize in truffles and smaller chocolates as well as larger fare if need be. For those not into chocolate (and really what is your problem?) there's lots of other items on offer that can satisfy the need for sugar. As well, check out their shelves of other confectionary items including a nook at the back with British fare like salt-water taffy, Flake, and Walker's Crisps. There's also tins of beans if you want, but you'll find the amount of chocolate within to be minimal at best. You're best to approach the counter, point to the truffles you want, and then try to see how far back you get to your house before you crack it open and eat one. My record is River Street. read more

it feels like this place has been transplanted from some place in orillia to queen street east. it feel very rural or general store like. the walls are wood with red trim (or that could just be what i remember). at the front, while you are melting into this illusion chocolate theme park, you can munch on a bag of popcorn. to be honest i didnt go and check whether it was free or not, but it seemed like it would be. they had one of those old style ones that you see at the movie theatres but smaller. displayed on a table nearby were two large chocolate gift baskets looking pretty lonely like rejected orphans. im sure these were the last of the bunch prepared just before christmas. smartly, they have a part of a wall devoted to greeting cards to accompany your present. indeed many of the chocolate treats youd buy here would be as presents. i photographed chocolates in the shape of drill sets and tools for tradespeople lets say, handcuffs and baton for cops or dominatrixes, medical equipment for health practitioners. walking further along, on a top shelf shielded by a suggestive black gossamer curtain, is the chocolate porn section. here you can choose from an array of chocolate cocks. or to be more specific cockscicles, so i suppose you can give them to someone and say something like "want a sucker?" as i said, great gift ideas. (except where are the vjayjays? cmon you could get a whole bunch of smaller chocolates and put them inside - no bag needed, very environmentally friendly!) alright enough of that. (obviously i need to go and review another sex store). anyhow, to finish off the family, they have an assortment of chips and candies like other local candy devoted stores. what i like most about this store is its accessibility. other stores that sell similar products seem to be more about their elitist recipes specialties (read: soma chocolate makers) and less about the real fun pleasure of life and eating those completely unneeded yet fully decadent treats. its not just called nutty for its nuts. read more

Decent selection, prices way inflated. I WAS a regular customer here until I made the mistake of asking the owner for a uk product I was having a hard time finding. She was extremely rude and proceeded to argue with us about said product's existence, repeatedly spewing 'In 16 years nobody has ever asked for that!' Well there's a first for everything. She then proceeded to state there is only one person in Ontario who supplies UK goods (100% not true, I work in food and beverage and deal with many uk suppliers) and that basically if she didn't have it "good luck getting that." When we mentioned other shops where we had seen it, she began to spew hate saying 'that store only sells seconds and expired goods' etc. extremely un-helpful, brash and rude. The irony being 90% of her product is almost always about to expire, and everything on sale is always within minutes of expiring. Another occasion I witnessed this same owner mocking a staff member (a young girl) who was apparently crying and upset somewhere, by telling her other employee "I don't pay her to cry" then proceeded to go on about how she is going to send her home. No consideration for her own employees as well as customers. If you are looking for UK goods at a much more reasonable price with human-style service, check out Empire @ Queen & Broadview. Stumbled upon this place while walking with a friend by the Beaches area. I was immediately excited, as I don't encounter gourmet chocolate shops such as this near my area or even extended surroundings. I was quite impressed with the selection of chocolate they had - whether it be belgians, truffles, bark, bars, or fudge - they had it! They also had quite an assortment of other candies and food items near the back of the store. Although there were some delays in communication, I was also appreciative that the store was willing to rush-order a particular item that I planned to give as a gift. One of the staff, or perhaps the owner, was open to even staying a bit after store hours just to ensure I received my product - that is good customer service! I love chocolate. I especially love chocolate fudge. Mind blowing, eye popping triple chocolate fudge. And you can find it in this store. Not to mention the other interesting flavours of fudge. And the wonderful selection of delicious chocolates. They make great gifts, ask my friends and family. But you also cannot leave without buying something for yourself. Yum! Absolutely love this place! Huge selection of British chocolate and treats in general. The staff is friendly and willing to bend over backwards to fulfill their customer's requests. I recently stopped in here because I could not ignore the box of salt water taffy on display in their window. This salt water taffy was delicious and had some really great flavours. The girl employee here has made my every experience in this store unpleasant. The first time I went to this store I was very excited as I'd never noticed it and I loved the vibe of the set up of the shop. I arrived about 35 mins before closing and picked out some prepackaged fudge. The employee (girl with short hair and tattoos) told the customers ahead of me that the debit machine was down and she had to go down to reset it. They payed with cash and she disappeared to the back for about 5 mins so assumed she was resetting the system. When she came back up I tried to pay for my stuff and she said "didn't u just hear me say the machine was down?" I told her I had thought she was resetting the machine. She said were only open for 30 more mins I'm not resetting it now. I left empty handed. today I went back hoping to get some gelato I had noticed last time. The same girl was working and when I said the flavour I wanted she told me "oh you don't want that there's not a lot left and it's not going to be good". Now I really understand what the expression "kid in a candy store" means, except I wasn't with a kid, I was with an Irishman with a sweet tooth and wanting a taste of home. I used to go to the Nutty Chocolatier all the time in Guelph, but I don't remeber all these foreign treats. They have everything from the proper tea biscuits for teatime to English Kit Kats for break time and chocolate Freddos (I was basically force fed these even after a very full dinner!) for anytime! Go and explore, the staff are knowledgeable but not pushy, so you can linger and discover. Went to this store for fudge for fathers day. The website said fudge was 3.99 but at the store was priced $5-7. I bought a few and instantly realized i had spent too much and gotten 1 too many. In addition at least 3 of the 5 were very stale and hard as rocks. As soon as i go back the manager starts glaring at me. When i tell them about the hard fudge she instantly gets defensive saying "that's impossible we cut it fresh everyday" without even feeling the fudge i bought. It felt like it was a month old. She agreed to replace one but as soon as i asked to return one she instantly refused saying that the machine doesnt do returns. Not once did she ever apologize, act nicely to me, or try to make up for my bad expierence. Will never be shopping here again. read more

The following is an email that I had sent to the head office of the Nutty Chocolatier in Port Perry. My intention was to hopefully receive an apology directly from the Beaches manager. She has apparently refused to do so. How professional. While attending the Beaches Jazz Festival in Toronto on Sunday, my boyfriend and I decided to take a look around your 2179 Queen Street East location. I actually have fond memories about this location as I used to regularly attend the festival in years past and so naturally I was excited to see what they had. Upon arrival we were greeted by an apron wearing employee. We began to browse around and came upon the chocolate initials that sell for $3.99. I quickly picked out my first initial and showed it to my boyfriend. He then swiftly (and lovingly) pulled together all the letters to spell my first name. Admittedly, the last letter fell off of the shelf a few times because it had a lean to it. The relevance of that comment comes shortly. So with the name spelled out, a woman with-out an apron called to us -FROM ACROSS THE STORE- and asked if we were 'playing' with the letters. I replied that my name had been spelled out. Now coming across the store and walking up next to us, she continued to speak in a volume that allowed anyone in the store to hear. She did not ask us politely to not 'play' with the boxes, no however she did go into a little spiel that I was less than impressed with - again a little too loudly. She rudely began explaining that people are always 'playing' with the letters and that sometimes they fall off of the shelf and crack. Well, that was $4 out of her pocket, not corporates but hers. And she can't afford for letters to continue being damaged. THEN on a tangent, she begins to complain about how she is not making money. She gestured to the sales floor and pointed out that she currently had more staff then customers. She THEN offered up the fact that her rent is double because it's assumed she makes lots of money due to her proximity to festivals/concerts. Not to imply that we do not care about her woes but I certainly do not appreciate being admonished for doing something I felt was harmless and certainly not an attempt to ruin inventory. It occurs to me that if it this was in fact a serious issue, as she made it sound, then she was neglectful to not have posted some sort of signage asking patrons to be careful with the precious $4 chocolates. Needless to say I was insulted and angry as I was made to feel as if I were the substance that she scrapes off of the bottom of her shoe. As she strode away like a peacock, my boyfriend and I exchanged confused and disgusted looks. I immediately lost interest in looking through the store any further and I was clearly not going to buy the assortment of truffles I had planned to purchase. Unfortunately I too have worked in retail. Six arduous years. I know people are rude and believe that the customer is always right. I also know when to smile, albeit with clenched teeth and not be offensive when explaining about something within the store. Whomever it was that spoke to us I assume was a manager again because she was with out an apron. She was approximately 5 foot 7 inches tall, had a fair to tanned complexion and had rather frizzy looking dirty blonde hair down past her shoulders. To be completely honest I do not know what to expect from my explanation but really a simple apology from the source certainly would be appreciated. However for the foreseeable future, I will NOT visit the Queen St. location but instead go to the Port Perry shop. It makes sense too because I am from Oshawa.
