I've been with NYCM Insurance for my car for over four years. I've paid well over $2,000 a year. I never put in a claim. I was never late in paying. I always pay the full year in advance. One day, my car broke down. I called a tow truck which is covered by my car insurance. No charge to me. Great. When I renewed my NYCM insurance, they said, "Good news. You're on our preferred plan. You save $500 on next year's rate." The bad news, however, is that I would've saved $700 but I put in that $200 claim for towing. So they took that $200 out of the $700 I would've saved. This cheap company couldn't have covered the $200 towing fee? I've paid them well over $8,000 in all the years I've been with them. I was told, in the future, don't put in a claim for low amounts. Even if I'm in an accident. Pay for anything under $1,000, otherwise they'll find a way to cover that in next year's rate. NYCM doesn't care about their customers. One of the worst insurance companies to use for homeowners insurance. Stay as far away as you can from this company. Had a small kitchen fire on 1/21. The adjuster responded promptly, but everything took a dive after that. The restoration companies that were hired were a complete disaster. They were slow and dragged things out. We were not careful and broke dishes, glassware, and other irreplaceable items. Lied about what they broke, until I examined the garbage they threw out. Had to fire one restoration company for the same things. NYCM had a trailer for keeping my possessions in, which was on the driveway. Town issued me a summons because they did not get a permit. Instead of storing the the container in storage, they brought everything into my dining room and living room. Ceiling to floor, wall to wall. Could not repair or replace damage. Updating review as of Nov. 2023. The home owners insurance company now asks me to provide them with bills of the floors painting, stove, backslash, they want me to provide bills from a closed and paid claim. In NYS, you as an insured individual can do anything with the money that you were awarded on an insurance claim. This company now is terminating my policy. Talk about low, this is the lowest they can go. I need home owners insurance with my FHA Mortgage. Since then I have acquired another policy with a different company. Let me be clear I'm not saying no to this location. I don't recommend NYCM at ALL!! Their customer service is the absolute WORST!! I've gotten in 2 accidents in the last year. Both times I was hit. This last time I was hit at a red light. When I reported the claim I stated, " the driver who hit me. It's his responsibility to pay for the damages on my vehicle. I'm not paying a dime, especially on a vehicle that is brand new and doesn't have a neck or a scratch on it." Now two weeks later NYCM wants me to dish out $1000. Come to find out they never reached out to the other drivers insurance company to file the claim rather they filed the claim under my insurance and are expecting me to dish out $1000 Due to my deductible when the accident was not my fault and I have proof. Now here I am making phone calls to the other insurance company and no one can give me a direct phone number. It's pitiful. Agent at "One Group" in Syracuse is pathetic and combative. Parent company is insanely difficult to work with while trying to cancel a deceased parent's auto and home policy. Still getting bills for a prepaid policy's they were instructed to cancel last year because they renewed it after being instructed not to. They're excuse was that my father had it on automatic annual renewal and I could not authorize canceling the policy without being listed in the policy as having that authority. I DON'T Recommend! inspectors or adjustors that come to your home are rude and arrogant. NYCM cancelled me after 34 years, in March, after flashing blew off during a blizzard and a hand railing was yet to be installed on a deck project started the previous summer. I don't know too many contractors that are going to come out in the middle of the winter to put up flashing or a handrail on a deck! I'm glad they canceled me because I found a much better insurance company with much better customer service. Absolutely the worst. Check the other reviews. Their driver hit my daughter. They determined 100% fault for their driver, after we fought them - initially said 90% and my daughter was hit broad side by a driver who ran a red light. Thankfully police report and three witness statements forced them to change - the hadn't even looked at the report before saying it was 10% our fault. Then, they did not issue payment for the tow yard in time - and the tow yard will not release the car until they get full payment. Which means we have to pay for extra days while NYCM takes their time mailing the payment. So far, it will be several days based on the timing. The female supervisor I spoke to on 10-29 was as rude and condescending as can be. Absolutely no empathy or recognition that the issue of the timing of them releasing the payment was going to cost us. Then, said that if I was going to get upset, that wasn't going to help "get something" from them. Then refused to provide contact information for the anyone else in the company - saying I could look it up. This. This is why people hate insurance companies. Forcing people to fight them for what is fair. Defaulting to put blame on the blameless. And treated people disrespectfully. Pick another company for sure. read more

They even have the gall to force you to take a broker, who is usually a relative of the ceo, so you are forced to pay his salary on top of your premium. Nepotism in the purest form. absolutely the best compony i was dealing with! the prices are a way cheaper then geico or state farm, no one can beat NYCM, thought geico had good prices but i was wrong, geico can not compete with NYCM, you only get a good price with geico if you drive 3000 miles or less a year and that is not the case with NYCM, with NYCM you can drive as many miles as you wish, no limits, you don't have to count how many miles you already drove to keep your premium low that is a big win over other major insurance companies. NYCM also give you more coverage for less money and 12 month policy which save you time by not dealing with 6 month policy with is super convenient but the best part is their customer service is lightning fast and 24/7, call them day or night and they will assist you in a matter of minutes and not days like other major insurance companies. i can not think off which another insurance company will beat NYCM, other insurance companies are just plain jokes, a total waste of your time and money. would not ever switch from NYCM to any other compony and if i do i would be so stupid. read more

This has been my homeowners insurance since 2005. Needless to say, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT!!! I recently had a flood in my home. The restoration team had to come out more than once because they left 3/4 of a soaked wet carpet on my bedroom floor. Odorous for days. My son was hit by their insured and police report clearly states that my son was stopped and hit from behind, and they said they don't care, the police report means nothing and they are not claiming any liability at all. The police report doesn't matter????? Whoever heard of such a thing? Not to mention my son has rear end damage and the other driver has front end damage. I have been insured by NYCM since 2014. I have had a few claims and the adjuster has come out the same day or day after reported and even issued a check to me on the spot! Very helpful and understanding billing department! Yes, you need to go through and agent pr broker for NYCM as they are not a direct carrier like the Geico's of the world. I have had this insurance for 2 years for my mother and everything has been fine. Recently I made a payment with a DEBIT card and got a confirmation number, the lady on the phone said I didn't have a payment due until March. So I toke her word. I went on vacation, came back and got a letter saying my insurance is cancelled! Apparently my the funds weren't released...which makes no sense. It was taken out before we ended the phone call. Now they added another charge and cancelled the insurance. I AM LIVID. My bank released the funds that same day and NYCM is claiming it didn't go through. I feel like somebody is lying or the rep stole my money. My mother is elderly and lives in a very cold and icy part of NY. If something happens to her and she isn't covered over THEIR MISTAKE, I will be forced to contact my lawyer and pursue a lawsuit. read more

My review of NYCM is from not only a prior customer of theirs but also as a long time independent insurance agent that has sold their products. FYI- I AM NOT RELATED TO ANYONE AT NYCM. I stumbled across the 2 reviews of this company and felt the need to write a "response." First off--Many insurance companies use agents/brokers to sell their products and DO NOT deal directly with the customer. YES--commissions are paid to the agency/agent for these sales. (Much like when you buy a car at a dealership.) These commissions are payment to the agency to handle all servicing for the customer. This gives you a representative who in essence is working for YOU, on YOUR behalf. These are the people you call when you have a question. The people you call when you have a problem. The people you can call to make a payment. OR imagine this, you can WALK into their office, sit down and have a discussion with them about what you need instead of waiting on hold for the next available representative. If you don't want someone who is licensed and understands insurance to help you, call GEICO or the GENERAL or PROGRESSIVE DIRECT. These companies do have a niche and they may suit your needs better. NOW--NYCM is a local NY company that writes business in NY only. They are not a huge National company. They have an amazing group of people that work there. Being this company is smaller they are able to listen to their agents---who contact them about their customers---and work with them to find a solution if it is at all possible. HOWEVER, if you are a poor payer, have a bad driving history, have a lot of claims--then of course they are not going to be flexible. NYCM is NOT Progressive or GEICO. They don't accept everyone and they won't take you back if you fail to live up to your end of the insurance contract that you sign. So if you miss that payment and your policy cancels--they are under no obligation to reinstate your policy. AND furthermore, if they get money AFTER your policy cancels, they will keep what is owed to them for the coverage they DID provide. EVERY insurance company has this practice. It only makes sense. I used NYCM for many years for my auto and renter's coverage. They had great rates. They, like most companies, had a rate change and at that time I shopped my coverage and changed companies. They weren't a BAD company for that--it's just how things work. Insurance companies are businesses after all. LET'S TALK CLAIMS: When it comes to claims, NYCM is NO DIFFERENT than any other company. If you're driving around a 10 year old car and wreck it, you aren't going to get the same amount as you would if your car was only 5 years old. Cars lose value--plain and simple--and no, you won't pay less for your insurance as your car gets older. There's just no way for this to happen in the real world. So just because you think you could get $5000 for your car based on a blue book evaluation, that doesn't mean the insurance company is going to pay that. That is unrealistic. They have factors and calculations that they use--they use the same ones for every claim--so they are all treated equally. Additionally, EVERY claim you have will impact your insurance in some way. Even deer hits or glass claims. A claim is a claim. The beauty of the insurance market is there are TONS of options out there. Every company has their own rates. Every company has their own guidelines. Reality is that insurance is something we all have to have for our cars here in NY. COLD HARD FACT--Insurance is NOT NICE. I have worked in the industry for 20 years and I have never met a single person who has said "I am so happy to be paying for insurance." This includes those that work IN the insurance companies! But, there are many people, including myself, that have had claims and have been glad to have had the coverage there when it was needed. You may not agree with how a company handles something, but guess what, you have many other companies you can use if that is the case. Posting reviews about a company that make them sound as if they are doing something wrong isn't doing anyone any good. NYCM is a reputable company. Your local agents/brokers are knowledgeable people that are there TO HELP YOU with your insurance. We have the schooling and licensing for this reason--so you don't have to know this stuff!! If you have questions about NYCM or any other company, it is the agent/broker that offers their products that can tell you about them--the good and the bad. I have had NYCM for my homeowners insurance since 1994, and added my cars about 3-4 years ago. Whenever I have had issue, they have been very responsive, fast and effective. I have worked with the agent, directly with NYCM representatives, and with the estimators when needed. They have been friendly and helpful. I have had 2 claims for water damage to my home (roof leak and appliance failure) and in both instances they processed the claims and checks quickly so that I could effect repairs. Most recently I had to have body damage repaired to the door of my car after someone hit it while parked and did not leave a note about the damages. I worked with NYCM directly, they arranged my rental car and paid directly, and have already sent the payment to the repair shop. I could ask for an easier process or more helpful insurance company based on the support I received from NYCM to date. read more

Beginning April 1, 2011 a $10 late fee will be assessed on any cancellation notice for nonpayment of premium. This means that you have to cancel your insurance on the very last day of the policy or they will charge you money if you stop doing business with them! This is what is known as a 'gouge.' An unethical practice by businesses that have a provision in their agreement with you that states that they can arbitrarily change their rates or add additional fees without negotiating with you and without your consent. I'd advise that when you ask your insurance broker to find a policy for you that you request them not to select New York Central Mutual Fire Insurance Company. Just another example of 'out of control management' that lacks the ability to creatively generate revenue! Remember: When a company has shareholders, you are not the customer, the shareholder is.
