There's also a really cute little gallery which is currently exhibiting illustrated books; again, definitely worth a glance in. If you're going on a market day, make sure you haven't eaten first, cos there's some goooood eatin' to be had.

We didn't get to do the guided tour, but we got plenty of details from the owner on the history and some of the details. This was so much better than the Dublin Castle and it is the only functional moat around a castle anywhere in Ireland.

Unfortunately, we could not stay the night. We were only in Dublin for the day because it was one of the port of calls on our cruise of the British Isles. One day in the future we hope to return for an overnight stay if we can afford it. They also hold many events such as weddings! Maybe one of our friends will get married here so we can check out more of this fantastic property and venue!! The property is also surrounded by the stunning Luttrellstown Castle Golf Club. The golf course is stunning. We ate at the restaurant inside the country club. Had a yummy Irish Breakfast!! Staff we came in contact with were all excellent! Staying at Lutterellstown Castle is on our bucket list! May have to win the Lotto first before that happens though.

Empty park benches are usually hard to find here on a warm sunny lunch hour. so u can usually see me speed walking past other hopeful 'empty park bench' wanters. Pretending I am just out for a leisurely speed walk, and then when i reach the only empty park bench I casually stop with a 'oh look an empty bench' look on my face and plonk myself down!!! at about 2pm the fountain in the middle of the pond is turned on. This can be pretty annoying when the wind blows! All the lucky people who managed to get an empty bench turn into synchronized swimmers. With the wind blowing the spray in the direction of the bench sitters - heads turn in beautiful synchronisation to avoid the spray. This usually last for about an hour, then normality resumes.

I would have liked to be in a smaller group, but given how many people want to see it, it was understandable. The museum is fascinating as well, and there is a temporary exhibit through the end of October 2026 of photographs taken by a prisoner who had smuggled a couple cameras in...as well as somehow setting a darkroom to develop the film. The cafe is nice; reasonably priced with a good selection of sandwiches, hand pies, baked goods, etc. Gift shop packed with a lot of stuff, but much of it standard Irish Tourist things, and not a lot of things directly relating to this place. Although maybe there's not a lot of gaol-specific merch available, I guess. As mentioned by many other commenters, unless you purchased your tickets weeks in advance, it's a bit of a challenge to try to catch some online when the extras are released for the day.

A must see in Dublin!…read more I didn't realize you had to book tickets so far in advance. We were lucky enough to be able to get some of the same day tickets they release at 9:15. The same day release was a bit hard to navigate on an iPhone but we did it fine. Our tour guide was super friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the tour and it was a great way to also escape the rain. Learned lots about the history of this place during the tour and at the museum!

Not being originally from Finglas i would count that as the reason i didn't know about this…read moregraveyard until the last couple of years. Apparently this was connected to one of the most influencial monasteries in Dublin and is there since around the 11th centuary. It served the people of Finglas up until around 1841 and around 1000 people are buried there including a distant relative of Princess Diana. A viking woman was found buried just outside the graveyard which leads me to believe that an excavation of the area would reveal some wonderful treasures. The graveyard is a bit hidden and unless you know where to look you will miss it easily. The big church in the village tends to draw the eye these days but lacks the elegance of this graveyard and ruined church. I read too a story about Cromwell who came to Ireland and smashed up all that was catholic and on hearing of his imminent arrival the people of Finglas apparently took down and hid the big celtic 1000 year old cross. This hiding of the stone was shared as a story for over 150 years until a priest decided to see if there were any truth in the story and lo and behold he found it in a field near the graveyard hidden until the soil. It was repaired and replaced and stands in the corner of the graveyard. The only negative thing i would say is that there are apartments built just in front of the graveyard and abbey which is typical of modern Ireland. Built apartments on sacred and ancient land instead of cherishing our heritage.

Staying at a nearby hotel, I spotted the Wellington Monument and had to walk over to check it out…read more Officially the Wellington Testimonial, it is 203 feet tall which makes it the tallest in Europe. It is a tribute to the victories of the Duke of Wellington. The structure is solid - there are no doors or entrances and you can't climb to the top. It is surrounded by an open grass area that's perfect for tossing a ball or having a picnic. There aren't any benches or seats facing the monument. The monument itself is impressive, and it is nice to sit on the steps and look out across the park on sunny afternoon. One might think it strange the monument was not renamed in the early years of this state, however, as the Duke of Wellington held Ireland and all things Irish in distaste. Born in County Meath, the Duke always insisted that he wasn't Irish, using the analogy that being born in a barn does not make one a horse. Asshole. Bad cess to him anyway, but nice monument, though.
