St. Mary's is a busy house. Mass attendance on Sundays is very good, and that's got to be because…read morethe Friars work hard to make it happen. The evidence is everywhere. It's in the well-prepared homilies which always help us reflect on the readings, but frequently address sensitive and even "hot" issues of the day at the intersection of faith and secular responsibility. This is not easily done and not often attempted in many, even most, Catholic parishes. The lay readers are superbly able and prepared, and Baptisms are sometimes embedded in the Sunday liturgy. That is like a community birthday party. Franciscans are known for creating a welcoming and joyful worship environment, and their efforts pay off here at St. Mary's. The weekly bulletin is an example. It's all good news about the Good News: Pictures of weddings and baptisms, it's Spanish/English for the strong and active Latino population, activities are celebrated in print and in photos - It's a happy place. I know of somebody who'd call this parish a field hospital for the faith-wounded.

The church does not follow unexplained traditional rituals - instead the service is simple with singing from the Psalms, the reading of the Scriptures, and the preaching of the Bible. The preaching was done from the Bible and was full of depth, logic, and passion. The preaching fills my mind with a new understanding of God, and it moved my heart to a better understanding of God's will for my life. The fellowship is wonderful - whereby people don't rush out the door on Sunday, but visited with each other and talked together like old friends. I've looked for a good Bible-believing church for years and was grateful to find this gem in Northern New Jersey.
