Dom Mário is hands down the best restaurant on Ilha Grande in Abraão!…read more Make a reservation if you're coming with a large group or on the island during the busy season or holiday week, as they don't have all that many tables. You start off with a bread basket and homemade butter with herbs and they had lots of English music playing on the speakers throughout the night. That butter though. Try at least one of the many caipirinha or caipiroska varieties for 12-14 reais each. I tried the maracuja com gengibre (passion fruit/ginger) and maracuja com manjericão (passion fruit/basil) and loved both of them. If you're a foreigner ie non-Brazilian, let them know if you prefer more or less cachaça in your caipirinha to get the drink of your taste. Vegetarian dishes are very sparse here, though my waitress did mention they had a veggie risotto that wasn't on the menu and they may have others as well. They are mostly known for their seafood dishes. I enjoyed my filet with gorgonzola sauce too. The restaurant is al fresco with a covered roof. Some of the tables are in the sand, so you can feel like you're on the beach even though you're a few steps away from the sounds of the waves crashing in. All around, a great experience and not so in your face of a tourist trap like the beachfront restaurants.

We actually went back the next night to get the filet with the shrimp sauce (the one many people had raved about in other reviews) and it was also very good. The fried fish was crispy and light and fresh, the sauce was very similar to the moqueca, which was just fine with us. Go here!

My wife had shrimp tossed in pasta, and I had a crusted filet of fish over risotto, and both were excellent. Service is prompt and cordial. Very little English spoken, but the menus have English translations. Wine & beer served. Of the two (this one and Bartholomeu), we preferred the latter -- but if you have two nights in town I would definitely suggest trying them both; can't go wrong with either one. Brazilians dine relatively late, so if you arrive at either one in the 6:00-to-7:00 range there is no need for reservations.

We got the steak for dinner, the portion was for 2 people but the meat but very fatty and tough. Service is slow and rather inconsiderate. When the table behind us asked for napkins, the waiter looked at our table where our main course had just been cleared up and snatched the napkins from our table to put on theirs. Such an odd thing to do! I would come back for drinks on the beach and the live music but I wouldn't eat here again.

We sat on the beach while we dined at the restaurant. My fish skewers and meal were good. At the end I wasn't given my bill so I let the server know. She brought out a bill but my meal listed was incorrect. It's a bit pricey for Brazil but it is justifiable because of the quality and variety. Most places only have a handful of varieties for pastel fillings. This place has at leas 30. I get shredded beef and cream cheese, guava and cheese, octopus pastel, muscles and creamy sauce, chocolate and strawberry... and the list goes on. The service could be just a tad bit better but it is laid back and the ambiance relaxed and chill. I also either get a local beer or a caipirinha when I am here. They have 2 locations.
