Some people try to be hipsters really hard, but other people are hipsters just because of who they are. This place is the former; it just tries too hard to be quirky. Even on the menu, where fancier and hipstery places will list what the drink has, this bar sort of hinted at the ingredients. Not ideal when you know what you're looking for or what you like.

What I really like here is the quieter weekdays when you can sip your unique cocktails in peace. The drinks have nice flavours and I think everyone can find a combination of flavours they like here. The menu also shows through pictograms the sort of glassware that the drink comes in. And I've found that very useful for quick selection when I don't know what I want. By default the drinks served in tumblers have my preferred flavour and I stay away from the ones served in champagne coupes. Works for me.

Executive summary: I'm a fan!…read more As the latest addition to Madklubben's Copenhagen portfolio, Bar Next Door is located next to the string of 3 restaurants by the lakes (Gran Torino, Hanzō, and my beloved Alabama Social), with the most beautiful view over the lakes. The place is not huge, but super cozy and the interior is well thought out, together with the music it creates a bit of a Great Gatsby vibe. It fits in well with the style of the other restaurants - as we walked in, we briefly asked ourselves if we'd taken the wrong door and instead walked into Alabama Social! The cocktail menu is short, but exclusive - you have your classics (Aviation, Old Fashioned, and the likes) - the only thing that was a bit off for me was the Piña Colada on the menu, but hey, I guess it's a popular drink. Could be interesting to try when it's not served in a 0,5l glass with tons of fruit on it. With our cocktails, we were served water, which many, but not all, good bars do. As they had a happy hour thing going on, we ordered two of their signature drinks for the price of one. First, we tried No 9, with Japanese bourbon, genmaicha popcorn tea, white pepper, and lemon curd. Yes, it was a good as that sounds! Next up was No 5, with vodka, apple syrup, Peychauds bitters, and jasmine tea. Another excellent choice, if I do say so myself! Prices are in line with other higher-end cocktail bars in Copenhagen. And yet the coconut didn't do enough to warrant the addition of it, and I ended thinking that I would have preferred a standard caipirinha. The Summer Cup, while it looked fruity and summery, didn't really hit the high notes on fruityness, nor really any other flavor. For snacks we had fries and the Alabama hot wings (presumably from Alabama Social, which is right next door). The fries were basically flawless, and the hot wings were as close to real American hot wings you can get in Copenhagen - not as hot and greasy as the real deal, but still very good.

She probably got some hunches that we needed alcohol and we needed it now. The pleasant experience didn't end just there, I ordered a cocktail called "Deez Nuts" (no worry, no politics in the ingredients list, just rum, lemon, hazelnuts and eggwhites!) and Mina K ordered Ryan's Apples. Apart from cocktails, they do have some very interesting beer from Mikkeller (duh!) after all, it's a Mikkeller bar. The huge plus side of this place is also the fact that it's walking distance from Nørreport st / Torvehallen. You could get something delicious from Torvehallen and then walk here for some "refreshment" (like we did after the wonderful tacos from Yuca Taco yesterday). It's far more convenient location than Mikkeller in Viktoriagade or the one in Stefansgade.... and it does serve both cocktails and beer, just in case you're not in the mood for the other.
