After her passing, hospice called them to have them pick up sister's body. It was actually a Sunday morning and we were not his first "pickup". So it took some time for him to come. He apologized but was very respectful. On Monday Linda, from office, called and set up appointment for me to come to office and sign paperwork. She was very courteous and sensitive. She explained they had some add-ons we could do but understood that I was not interested. She said that there was jewelry available but I told her I had already purchased what we needed. I asked her about spreading ashes in ocean (like the picture on wall). She told me she would get back with me with details of that procedure. On Friday she called to let me know that the death certificates were in office and asked if I wanted mailed. I told her I would come by to pick up. She showed me details of the company they use to spread ashes in ocean which was about 5 times more that I had arranged privately. She understood. The following week, Jenn, from the office called to say they had the ashes. I told her I would come by to pick up. She explained the certificates that came in the box. We mentioned that I had some jewelry purchased (from Amazon). She was so kind to offer to put ashes into my jewelry. She says she does it everyday and has lots of experience. So I took the jewelry back to her (along with superglue I had bought so jewelry would not come "loose"). Within 15 minutes she had the jewelry filled (and glued). I tried to pay her for the service and she politely said "no, no, we are not allowed". Bottom line, I was NOT pressured into buying something I did not want nor need. The contract was honored. Service that I needed was provided.

The trails to the left, on the other hand, are well- lit and sunny. On our most recent visit, my husband and I stumbled upon a very small cemetery. I thought that it might have been a pet cemetery due to its size, but after some quick research, my husband was able to find information regarding the family that it is believed to have belonged to. It was both creepy and cool at the same time. We walked a loop that was surprisingly dense at points and I was amazed at the fact that we didn't pop back out onto the main trail as quickly as I'd thought we would. There were some very steep slopes at points that were marked with cones that I found to be quite dangerous, but it's nature, so what are you going to do?! I love the preservation of this natural/ wild space. The sound of the birds in the forest canopy is calming and there are several places to stop, have s seat and just listen. There is also at least one of those tiny community libraries located there, as well as many other interesting features.

They also offer Pre-Planning packages to avoid putting your loved ones through this experience. They are compassionate, kind, respectful of your loved ones, and they gently walk you through the selection process. They realize you're numb from grief and no one is ever ready for this process in our lives. Conkle's interior remains as it has been for years but is clean, well maintained and cared for even though the drapes are certainly out of style. I know! Who's looking at the drapes at a time like this? The chapels are large and can be increased or decreased as necessary. They try to accommodate every person's budget and are helpful even after the service when you need death certificates or have questions. One additional thought is many restaurants are located within walking distance of Conkles in Speedway for those who spend hours supporting the family. This was brought to my attention and much appreciated for those assisting the family and friends.

Les helped us through each step of planning the services and has continued to assist us with things like applying for a DD-214 to verify military service and securing additional death certificates. We have felt listened to, respected and valued. Recommendations are suggestions, highly personal, and I highly recommend Conkle.

Our loved one tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident on Sunday. As we were not from the…read morearea, we selected this funeral home based on Google reviews. Having recently buried three family members in Fort Wayne, we are unfortunately familiar with what to expect from professional and compassionate funeral services. Our experience here, however, was exceptionally poor. The director did not greet us with a handshake, nor did she offer even basic courtesies such as water or coffee. When we requested a service date of June 13th, she declined without checking availability, stating we would need to choose Friday, Sunday, or the following week. After leaving the room multiple times, she later returned to admit she had been looking at the wrong calendar and that the date was actually open--but still claimed she could not accommodate the size of our gathering. We asked if the mother could view her son prior to embalming. She declined, stating this was not allowed and that she was unsure of his condition, and told us visitation would not be possible until Saturday. We inquired about completing an assignment of benefits with the insurance company to avoid paying out of pocket. She stated they do not offer this option, instead using a third-party service that charges a 6% fee. She informed us that Marion County charges $20 per death certificate; we later learned the actual cost is $17.50. She quoted $500 for the body transfer from the forensic center, yet we were later told the charge would be $350. During one of her repeated absences from the room, we contacted another funeral home. They were able to meet with us within 20 minutes. Within 30 minutes of our arrival, they had already arranged to bring our loved one into their care and begin preparations so his mother could see him the following day. The difference in service was profound. We were greeted with compassion--a hug, handshake, and refreshments. There was no upselling of services such as death certificates or transfers. They were also able to complete an assignment of benefits directly with the insurance company, allowing costs to be covered without additional fees or out-of-pocket expenses. They lost out in an over 20K transaction. In a time of grief, families deserve empathy, transparency, and professionalism. Unfortunately, our experience here fell far short of those expectations.
