Got here about 10:20ish on sunday and it was empty so were able to sit right away - friendly staff super upbeat! The tortillas tasted homemade which is always great! The first taco was Barbacoa was good - no grease a little dry but not crazy and still flavorful adding the salsa gives it just enough of a kick - 4 out of 5! Next up bean and egg - took me back to childhood - simple great taste 4.5 out of 5! The potato and chorizo didn't have a lot of chorizo but still had flavor 3.5 out of 5. Last taco was country sausage and egg - not gonna lie I was full so it took me a few to get going and it was a little cold but it had great taste! Tasty traditional breakfast at a true dive restaurant in the middle of a sketchy neighborhood. In other words, the type of place it's worth hiking to from downtown. While breakfast was good, my horchata was AMAZING. I enjoyed it for the rest of the day! A true Oasis downtown. I've been coming here for years. This is as close to some abuela's kitchen as you can get without being charged with breaking and entering... Stopped here for lunch today before going on a walk down at Woodlawn Lake- it wasn't my new favorite but it was nice to try something new. The atmosphere was inviting and the chairs were extra comfortable. The food was good but I felt like it looked prettier than it tasted. Maybe I just needed to give it a shake of salt. However when sitting at our table and waiting for our drinks to be brought out, a baby roach was crawling on wall and made its way to our table.. My SO and I went here three times during our three day visit to San Antonio. So yes, we may be a little obsessed. But $5.50 for a yummy, delicious, authentic lunch entree? You'd be crazy not to. Service was fast and the staff is so friendly. It's definitely a neighborhood favorite in the mornings and it seems that everyone knows everyone else. But they'll make you feel like you've been going there for years too. We are vegetarians and there were plenty of options for us although it is helpful to mention any dietary preferences you have: we did not expect the cheese enchiladas to have a beef chili sauce by default. But they were super accommodating and it wasn't an issue at all for them. The entrees were terrific, especially the enchiladas. We also had a number of tacos. We thought that the chilaquiles were all right but the chilaquiles tacos were definitely our favorite, maybe tied with the enchiladas. They also give complimentary chips with red and green salsa. Both salsas are wonderful but the green was quite spicy (and we do pretty well with spicy). To get a sense of how affordable it is, over three days we had eight tacos and three large entrees and it came out to $36 including tax and tip. Come hungry. read more

After visiting a trade show at the convention center we stopped in here for a quick lunch. I ordered three thinking they were the smaller street tacos. I could only eat one and a half. I loved them. I had one egg and potato and one bean and cheese. They were great. They also provide chips and salsa while you wait for your food. Looking for a reasonably priced place to eat (so the Riverwalk's completely out) but not wanting to walk far from the Alamo, I found this place via Yelp. Thank you Yelpers, as you did not fail me. I have already recommended this place to other visitors as well! When you walk in, there's only about 10 or so tables. There's this homey feel despite being a hole-in-the-wall kind of place. The larger tables are reserved for more than two people, which makes sense. The restaurant does not want someone who's eating solo to eat at a table for four. I feel as if this was a house, and then the tables are in the addition of the house, as there are steps within the restaurant. When you are done eating, you go up the steps into the house and pay the cashier. I ordered the enchiladas, and they were perfect. Oozing in cheese, covered in all sorts of goodness, and served with free salsa and free chips? Yes please! The plate was FULL of food, and I was just absolutely stuffed. As one who has lived in Texas my whole life, this is the epitome of TexMex food. Best of all was the price. My enchilada plate was less than five dollars, pre-tip. I wanted to give a 100% tip just for having great food, but I didn't want to set a precedence my first time. We were originally going to another restaurant a short distance away, but it was closed on Mondays, so we decided to try The Oasis Mexican Cafe that we had passed. I'm so glad we did. The service was great and the food was excellent. I got the huevos rancheros over easy with carne guisada. Everything , including the breakfast potatoes was perfect. The ranchera sauce, which I got on the side was made with fresh tomatoes and very flavorful. The eggs were just right. The carne guisada was delicious. Cons: You get what you pay for, the food pretty low quality. I would barely give it a 3. Overall: The very mediocre food quality is helped by the fact that it is at least authentical in style.
